EACA Needs YOU!
|
As announced at the July Monthly Meeting, EACA is seeking candidates
for vice president. Jonathan Robinson - who did a stellar job, by the
way - moved from the neighborhood. The vice president fills in for the
president, when needed, and manages the membership rolls and the
procurement and delivery of EACA yard signs. Other duties are requested
on an as-needed basis, and the position takes less than 15 hours per
month to accomplish. If you are interested in the position, please
contact Nominating Committee Chairperson, Henry Bryant, at hbryant@mindspring.com.

I-20 East Transit Initiative
|
MARTA is analyzing and
eventually recommending transportation options between downtown Atlanta
and Rockdale County. This project -- called the I-20 East Transit Initiative -- has already begun; however, consultants for this project
are seeking representatives from affected communities to serve on a
Stakeholders Advisory Committee. The East Atlanta Community Association
will have one representative to serve on this Committee. If you are
interested in transportation issues and in serving your neighborhood in
this capacity, please contact Austin Dickson indicating your interest.

EACA's New Tax Status
| Earlier this month, EACA received notice that it's now recognized as a 501(c)(3) tax exempt nonprofit
organization, according to the Internal Revenue Service. A big "thank
you" goes to Elena Kaplan and Heath Turner who have shepherded this
long, tedious and sometimes maddening process to completion. What this
new status means for you is that contributions are tax deductible. You can make tax-deductible donations to EACA by sending checks to P.O. Box 18366, Atlanta, GA 30316.
|
Support Neighbor in Need
| EACA's new program needs your support! Neighbor in Need, a model developed in East Lake, provides emergency home repair for low-income, elderly residents of East Atlanta. As an initiative of EACA, Neighbor in Need is a grassroots,
relationship-based, block-by-block effort; if you have a neighbor that
might need some help, please contact Jeff Whitehouse,
Chairperson of EACA's Neighbor in Need initiative. All donations to
this initiative are tax-deductible and go directly to the costs of labor
and materials to help out our neighbors.
-
A donation of $1,000 would help cover a portion of an expensive roof or central AC repair.
- A donation of $500 would help get hot water running again in a senior's home.
- A donation of $250 would help a neighbor fix a broken door or window.
Contributing to this initiative is as easy as clicking the PayPal DONATE button on EACA's website. We need your support in improving the quality of life for our long-time East Atlantans.

Tower Application Denied
| The
tower application for 469 Metropolitan Place was denied by the City of
Atlanta last week. If this issue interests you, follow the status of the
proposed moratorium on tower applications. Councilmember Natalyn
Archibong will present such a proposal at today's City Council meeting,
which, if supported, will then make its way to various committees for
review. If today's proposal is supported, there will be more opportunities
for you to offer your voice on this issue, which is much broader than East Atlanta.

The Friends School of Atlanta Celebrates 20 Years
| On Friday, September 17, The Friends School of Atlanta (FSA) will hold
an event called Food Fundamentals for Healthy Kids and Communities that takes an interdisciplinary look at the food we eat and at the Farm
to Table movement that is growing in momentum in Atlanta and around the
country. To be held on the campus at 862 Columbia Drive in Decatur, the
event kicks off a year-long speaker series to commemorate FSA's 20th
Anniversary. The event is free and open to the public.
Beginning at 6:00 pm, FSA will screen a film called What's on Your
Plate?, a witty and provocative documentary about kids and food
politics that follows two inquisitive 11-year-old girls in New York City
as they explore their place in the food chain. The film will be followed by a panel discussion from 7:00 to 8:00 pm.
The Friends School of Atlanta is commemorating its 20^th year throughout
the 2010-11 school year with a Speaker Series entitled: Building Beloved Community, Celebrating 20 Years of Quaker Education in

neglected sidewalks. We started our efforts in the South village area
and cleaned up the sidewalks at Newton and Flat Shoals (Paradise
Living), Ormewood and Gresham (Kudzu House), Portland and Gresham, and
along Stokeswood near East Gate. Thanks to all who helped!!

East Atlanta Security Patrol
|
A few more details for week 31, which continued a pattern of significant
crime we've been experiencing for the past couple weeks. There were a
total of 17 crimes, including three residential burglaries, two
commercial burglaries, a pedestrian robbery, nine larcenies (five were
from vehicles) and two auto thefts. A couple of crimes listed below for
week 31 belong to week 32, so we probably have at least two burglaries
for the week that will end on August 7th. Please be aware that August,
September and October have historically been our worst crime months, so
don't hesitate to call 911 and the EASP regarding any suspicious activity.
To learn more about the East Atlanta Security
Patrol, view updated news and notes or to enroll, visit the
EASP website. There
is a 50% discount for longtime residents and those 65+. To qualify, you
must
have lived at the same address for 20 years or be over age 65. We also
have a 20% discount for members of an APD-sanctioned Neighborhood
Watch. Please contact us if you're interested in setting up a Neighborhood
Watch on
your street. If you have additional questions, please direct them to easp610@gmail.com, or call EACA
Public
Safety Chair Myron Polster at 404-954-1568.
