Charter School and Atlanta Charter Middle School Merger Update
|
In
mid-March, following the approval of the merger charter petition for the
Atlanta Neighborhood Charter School (ANCS) by the governing boards of ACMS and
NCS, the petition application was submitted to the Atlanta Public Schools as the
local authorizing agency for review and approval. As a result, the
ABE unanimously approved the ANCS charter petition. So,
what happens next? In terms of the
charter petition approval process, the application now moves to the Georgia
Department of Education for approval by the state. Preparing for the merger of the schools,
however, will take time and deliberate planning, so the governing boards of
both schools are taking steps to lay out a transition process even before the
state approves the application. The
regular school newsletters (available on each school's website) have contained, and will continue to contain frequent updates on the progress towards the
schools' merger.

Something Fresh at Burgess-Peterson Academy
| An apple a day keeps the doctor away at Burgess-Peterson Academy
Do you remember hearing your parents and grandparents telling you the
little folklore, "An apple a day keeps the doctor away"? Well, we all
know how important fresh fruits and vegetables are to our diet and also
for our health. The Food, Conservation and Energy Act of 2008authorized funds for a program that offers free fruits and vegetables
to students during the school day. This year the students at Burgess-Peterson Academy (BPA) along with students from 49 other school districts in Georgia
will have an opportunity to enjoy a fresh fruit or vegetable as part of
their daily routine.
In support of the school wellness policy, Coach Betty Jackson
submitted the grant to increase the consumption of fresh fruits and
vegetables to all students. The program will also support the garden and edible tree orchard already in place at the school. With the help of
the Atlanta Public Schools Nutrition Department
and local farmers, the BPA students will enjoy familiar fruits and
vegetables native to Georgia and sample fruits like figs, pomegranate
and kiwi as well as watermelon radishes, bok choi and other lesser-known
veggies. The program will start in August and continue throughout the
school year. The healthy snacks also will address an area of childhood
obesity by giving students a choice of enjoying naturally grown produce, and cut down the amount of sugary snacks that the students and parents
bring to school each day.

Kingfisher Academy has Moved!
| Kingfisher is now in a new
building (for us) at 158 Moreland Avenue, SE (the old Southface
Building). We have more room to work with and a nice outside area to
develop. We are grateful to Martha Brown for allowing us to rent their
facility while we developed a more long-term building vision. Now, we
have room for a play yard, a butterfly garden, a worm barrel, some small
fish ponds, and a wonderful greenhouse area. As always, our mission
includes using the environment as an integrating theme and this new
space will allow us to expand that into our after-school program as
well.
Also, with the new room are some additional classrooms, so we are
opening up enrollment to several classes: kindergarten through 4th
grades each have one or two enrollment spaces open and we have one space
open in 6th
grade. We'll have an open house in August for the community and hope
to get a chance to show off our new digs before the school year begins. For us, the school year begins on August 30th. But you'll be seeing us
next week at BAT*L as we are the yellow bus that delivers soldiers to
the various tombs for the wreath-laying ceremonies. See you, then!
