Burgess-Peterson Academy Garden Wrap Up
|
Thanks from the Burgess-Peterson Academy garden!
More than 20 people, including a few future students, grabbed their
gloves and garden tools to work up a sweat at the Burgess-Peterson
Academy garden workdays on Saturday and Sunday. Volunteers built an
arbor, erected a fence (using manual post-hole diggers to build extra
muscle!) and cleared an area in the woods for an outdoor classroom. Be
sure to take a look at their work at the school's August 7 open house.
Michelle Rice and Adam Waterson - East Atlanta residents and DeKalb
Master Gardeners - led the volunteer effort. Special thanks to Ruth Cameron, John Reed and Ted Hitch, who volunteered
on both days. More workdays will be
planned in the future.

Kingfisher Academy has Moved!
| Kingfisher is now in a new
building (for us) at 158 Moreland Avenue, SE (the old Southface
Building). We have more room to work with and a nice outside area to
develop. We are grateful to Martha Brown for allowing us to rent their
facility while we developed a more long-term building vision. Now, we
have room for a play yard, a butterfly garden, a worm barrel, some small
fish ponds, and a wonderful greenhouse area. As always, our mission
includes using the environment as an integrating theme and this new
space will allow us to expand that into our after-school program as
well.
Also, with the new room are some additional classrooms, so we are
opening up enrollment to several classes: kindergarten through 4th
grades each have one or two enrollment spaces open and we have one space
open in 6th
grade. We'll have an open house in August for the community and hope
to get a chance to show off our new digs before the school year begins. For us, the school year begins on August 30th. But you'll be seeing us
next week at BAT*L as we are the yellow bus that delivers soldiers to
the various tombs for the wreath-laying ceremonies. See you, then!

East Atlanta Security Patrol
|
The week ending July 17th (week 29) had no reported burglaries in
Beat 610. That means just two reported burglaries for the first three
weeks of July. Last July there were 17 burglaries, so we are doing much
better than last summer. To put this into perspective, at the end of
2009 we'd had at least ten burglaries in 28 out of the prior 30 months.
In 2010, only in April (13) have we experienced ten or more
burglaries. We have had a fairly high number of auto thefts of late, so
please be sure to protect your vehicle in any way possible, but some
sort of kill switch for your ignition is highly recommended if your car
is parked outside at night.
However, East Atlanta (Beat 610) had the most
crime in all of Zone 6 despite having no burglaries. There were eight
incidents, including three auto thefts and a residential robbery.
To learn more about the East Atlanta Security
Patrol, view updated news and notes or to enroll, visit the
EASP website. There
is a 50% discount for longtime residents and those 65+. To qualify, you
must
have lived at the same address for 20 years or be over age 65. We also
have a 20% discount for members of an APD-sanctioned Neighborhood
Watch. Please contact us if you're interested in setting up a Neighborhood
Watch on
your street. If you have additional questions, please direct them to easp610@gmail.com, or call EACA
Public
Safety Chair Myron Polster at 404-954-1568.
