 Greetings!

EACA Logo
Hello,

Don't forget that tomorrow's EACA Monthly Meeting will be at the Brownwood Park Recreation Center.  We'll get started at 7:00 pm.  Also, this weekend is packed with neighborhood events.  Read on for details.

Enjoy!!

Show Your Support!
Checklist ImageSince 1982, the East Atlanta Community Association (EACA) has been an all-volunteer organization committed to making East Atlanta the best neighborhood around.  To fulfill our mission, we need your help in getting all of this good work accomplished.

Do you appreciate the information you receive in our newsletter?  Do you participate in the East Atlanta Security Patrol?  In the Parents Network?  In Brownwood Park improvement activities?  All of these efforts are part of EACA.

We have exciting new programs this year, but we can't do it without financial support from the community we serve.  EACA annual memberships are only $10.00 per household.  Join us, and show your support for all of the volunteers that make East Atlanta the great community it is!

You can sign up for your 2010 EACA membership and order EACA Yard Signs on-line!  Pay electronically through your online banking site or via Paypal HERE.

Preserving East Atlanta
In thinking regionally about freight movements, the Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC) strongly considered establishing Glenwood Avenue from Moreland Avenue to Candler Road as a Regional Freight Route.  This decision was based on factors including
the street's connectivity to major arterial roadways as well as previous designations; Glenwood Avenue is a truck route designated by the City of Atlanta, and it's also a State Highway (#260) according to the State of Georgia.  If finalized, East Atlantans would see a significant increase in truck traffic through the neighborhood.

NPU-W, SouthStar Community Development Corporation, and SAND all spoke out in opposition of this plan at ARC's public meetings this spring.  At EACA's April Meeting the community voted unanimously to oppose this Regional Freight Route designation and charged EACA's President with speaking with the ARC.

On Thursday, May 6, EACA's President, SAND's President, and a board member of SouthStar attended a meeting with a City of Atlanta planning official and two ARC employees.  ARC admitted that though Glenwood made more sense technically, the organization often bases its decisions on contextual issues.  In this case, the close proximity of single-family homes and an elementary school as well as the survival of the Village and its pedestrian environment were the factors that changed the decision.  Memorial Drive, not Glenwood, will be designated as a Regional Freight Route.

In short, EACA and its partners stopped a heavier flow of truck traffic through the neighborhood.  Despite the small victory for our community, you should still look both ways before crossing the street.

--Austin Dickson, EACA President

EAV Farmers Market
Checklist ImageThe EAV Farmers Market had a rockin' opening day.  Thank you EAV neighbors for showing outstanding support for your local farmers market.  This year the market is packed (literally full) of farmers, bakers, cheese makers (& cheese mongers), crafters, yogurt makers, grain & granola producers, ranchers and more.  They've even got a wood-fired pizza oven.

Come out this week for a chef demo with chef Justin Bright from the Graveyard Tavern who will be showing us what to do with all that fresh seasonal food.   Don't forget, the market accepts EBT and doubles every EBT dollar through their partnership with Wholesome Wave Georgia.

Thursdays 4pm to 8pm May through November
1231 Glenwood Ave At Village Hardware

Senate District 42 Special Election
Checklist ImageOn Tuesday, May 11, there's a special election for Georgia Senate District 42, a seat recently vacated by Ambassador David Adelman.  There are four candidates in the race to fill the seat.  Only a portion of East Atlantans are a part of the district. Generally speaking, if you live in DeKalb County north of Glenwood Avenue, then you're likely within Senate District 42.

You can always check with the Secretary of State to be certain.
EAST ATLANTA BEAUTIFICATION NEEDS YOU!
Please join your neighbors on May 16th at noon to beautify our Village.  The East Atlanta Beer Festival is May 22nd, so this cleanup is timed perfectly for us to tidy up the village and show Atlanta how proud we are of our neighborhood.  This month we will focus on the "Welcome to East Atlanta" sign and to various planting beds in the heart of the village.

We continue to rely on a very small group of dedicated volunteers.  Your help is greatly needed for only a couple of hours to make the work go smoothly and cover more ground.  Volunteering for beautification is an extremely rewarding experience, and a unique way to bond with your neighbors.  Please consider making this month's clean up day your start in participating in our great community.

Please bring work gloves and a friend.
NCS and ACMS Proposed Merger
