Fire Station 13 Update
|
Last week, Interim Chief Joel Baker promised a
response to a letter, dated March 16 and signed by the president of SAND
(south Atlantans for Neighborhood Development) and EACA. The response
was not as robust as expected, and a follow-up meeting between the presidents of the two neighborhood associations and City's Chief Operating Officer, the Interim
Chief of the Fire Rescue Department, the Director of the Bureau of
Buildings, Councilmember Smith and Councilmember Archibong is in the
works for the beginning of April.
However, some detail that was passed along was
budgetary figures. Many residents have been curious as to what the new
fire station costs the City.
According to the chief, "the
original contract amount for Fire Station 13 was $2,579,068. There
have been change orders totaling $175,688. To
date $2,554,041 has been paid and $137,736 retained. The
balance to finish is $200,694."
More
information will be released in this newsletter, as EACA has it
available to share. EACA, NPU-W and SAND are actively engaged in this
issue and getting as much information out to the public as possible.
-Austin
Dickson, EACA President

Tire Round-Up 2010
|
The Earth Day tire round-up will be Saturday, April 17. Volunteers will
meet at 8 a.m. at the corner of Glenwood and Haas (Holy Taco and Armor
corner) and work until 1.
For those of you who are new to the
area this is an event sponsored by Councilwoman Natalyn Archibong, and
it has become a contest among the neighborhoods in her district. You
normally have to pay to dispose of trashed tires, but on this day
Archibong sets up a crew to accept them free.
Volunteers race
around the neighborhoods, and collect as many tires as possible during
the allotted time. We need pickup trucks, drivers and volunteers who
don't mind getting extremely dirty and a little bit wet to serve as the
trucks' crews.
Folks also can arrange for us to pick up tires, or
drop them off at Armor Tire.
For more info, to volunteer or to report
tires please email 4chisos@comcast.net.

Easter Egg Hunt - A Good Time Had By All!
|
EACA would like to extend a great big thanks to the East Atlanta Kids Club for their sponsorship of this past Saturday's Easter egg hunt. The park was covered with children of all ages enjoying not only the egg hunt itself, but also egg races, face painting, egg dying and other activities. It was wonderful to see Brownwood Park being enjoyed by so many neighbors.

Kingfisher Academy 2010-2011 Enrollment
|
Kingfisher Academy is enrolling for the 2010-2011 school year. There
are openings in several elementary classes and in the 6th grade class.
Tours occur every Wednesday morning through March and April.
Kingfisher
operates on 5 principles. We are a school that stands for taking care of
Mother Earth and try to operate in an
environmentally friendly a manner. We believe in Peace and Justice and are members of
the Peach School Movement for Middle Schoolers. This means we strongly
encourage kindness and the compassionate solution to problems. We have a
bias toward that "bright, bored
student" that seems to be
keeping up with regular classroom work, but could be more excited and
interested if school was
more action-oriented. We support
independence and self-reliance in our students, from the youngest
three-year-old to the teenagers.
Finally, we think community is extremely important--we
buy in East Atlanta, and eat in East Atlanta restaurants. We hire East
Atlanta folks to work with us and we do service projects around our
community.
Call 404-624-0807 for an appointment and we'll be glad to
show you around and tell you about our school. Kingfisher is located at 468 Moreland Ave. Information packets are
also available upon request.

THINKING ABOUT SCHOOLS?
Which area
elementary school is designed with classrooms surrounding a secluded courtyard
with a new playground, picnic tables and an organic garden watered from rain
barrels?
Here's a
hint. It's the same school with its own computer lab, media center,
science lab and dedicated art and music rooms.
Need another
hint? This school has low student-teacher ratios and state of the art
interactive white boards in most classrooms.
Here's your last
hint. If you live in East Atlanta, your elementary school age child is
guaranteed a spot. And it's
FREE.
Come see why
parents are buzzing about East Atlanta's public elementary school!
Burgess-Peterson
Academy will host a tour for prospective families on February March 31 at 10 AM.
The school is
located at
480 Clifton Street at the corner of Glenwood and Clifton, less than
a mile east of East Atlanta Village.
Childcare will be
available for the 10 AM tours.

Run Before You Crawl, East Atlanta Village 5K and Pub Crawl
|
The Run Before You Crawl 5k and Pub Crawl is Atlanta's premier race
slash pub crawl, in fact, we are fairly certain it is Atlanta's only
race slash pub crawl. This first annual event will take place in and
around the East Atlanta Village on April 10th, 2010. The race begins
and ends in beautiful Brownwood Park. In between you will meander
through the East Atlanta Business District
Because this 5K is aimed at people with a proclivity for drinking we
have elected for the race to begin at 9:00 am. The Pub Crawl will begin
at 10:30 am. We realize this is early, but just think, it will be
11:30 in Nova Scotia, and that's nearly noon. The Pub Crawl will visit
The Earl, Holy Taco, The Flatiron, The Midway Pub, and The Glenwood and
end at 1:30 pm.
The Run Before You Crawl 5k does not discriminate on the basis of age or
physical fitness (or on any basis for that matter). For that reason
you are welcome to register for the pub crawl or 5K individually. From March 14 to and including race day entry
fees are $25 for the 5k, $10 for the pub crawl, or $32 for both. Just
because we choose not to discriminate on the basis of age, does not mean
that the State of Georgia will not. All pub crawl participants must be
at least 21 years of age.
All proceeds from this event to end all events goes towards the East
Atlanta Village and making it a safe place to shop, dine, and drink.

Have You Seen Downed Lines?
|

Have you seen utility wires,
telephone lines or metal cables on the sidewalks in East Atlanta? Loose
wires in the pedestrian path can trip people
up and cause serious injury. You could
win a prize by reporting wire hazards in March.

PEDS, metro Atlanta's
pedestrian advocacy organization, invites all metro Atlanta neighbors
(that's you) to
report wire hazards online at peds.org during
the month of March. The more hazardous wires
you report in March, the more chances you have to win. Learn
how you can participate at peds.org.

East Atlanta Security Patrol
|
As the weather has warmed up, we've
received a flood of complaints about drug sales and vehicles speeding or
drag racing through the neighborhood. If you feel that your street or
area has a problem house or any significant issue that reduces your
quality of life, please let us know. We are compiling an updated list
of these problems, and will be working with neighbors and APD to
determine strategies to address as many of these locations as possible.
The EASP is working closely with APD and the Dekalb DA's office to
bring an end to the repeated crimes that have occurred in a small corner
of East Atlanta. It would appear that one man has perpetrated about
half the burglaries in our community in 2010, and hopefully he will be
picked up soon for parole violations. Until then, all residents in the
area of Fayetteville, Hilburn, Montvallo and Village Walk should be very
cautious. This man is armed and potentially dangerous, and seems to
strike between 4-7 am on weekdays, either by robbing people outside
their home or breaking into homes through windows. Expanded APD and
EASP presence will continue in this area until this man is apprehended.
His general description is a black male, mid 20s, 5'11" and 180 pounds
with a dark complexion.
Due to a large number of requests and the presence of the criminal
described above, the EASP has been working with the city to improve the
lighting on Flat Shoals between Marshalls Lane and Fayetteville Road.
Over a dozen streetlights have been restored in that area this month,
and two more are still being repaired. A big thanks goes out to
Councilmember Archibong's office, which has been working with us since
the beginning of the year on what has proven to be a large project.
Extensive repairs by Georgia Power and the city were required to get the
streetlights turned on, but it should make for a much safer area for
cars, pedestrians and residents.
To learn more about the East Atlanta Security
Patrol, view updated news and notes or to enroll, visit the
EASP website.
There
is a 50% discount for longtime residents and those 65+. To qualify, you
must
have lived at the same address for 20 years or be over age 65. We also
have a 20% discount for members of an APD-sanctioned Neighborhood
Watch.
Please contact us if you're interested in setting up a Neighborhood
Watch on
your street.
