Fire Station 13 - Update
|
Fire Station 13 - Update
As promised in the March 1st Newsletter, EACA has obtained a deeper
analysis of the Atlanta Fire Rescue Department's coverage for the East
Atlanta area. As you now know, Fire Station 13 firefighters have been
temporarily transferred to Station 10 in Grant Park. Many residents have
raised concerns about response times, and the attached map should
detail exactly where and when the Atlanta Fire Rescue Department can
reach an emergency. This map was furnished by Sharyl Chatman
of the Department's Office of Assessment and Planning. At the
insistence of EACA, NPU-W, and Council-member Archibong, Chief Baker has
put DeKalb County on notice, so if needed, DeKalb County will be called
upon in an emergency.
At tomorrow's EACA Monthly Meeting (March 9), Interim Chief Baker
and Lieutenant Daws (Station 13 Project Manager) will be present
and prepared to give a summary of last Wednesday's community meeting at
the East Atlanta Library. They will also provide information regarding
when the station will be open and fully staffed as well as an overview
of quality assurance and performance measures.
CORRECTION: In last week's newsletter, the article mentioned that
the contractor for the new Fire Station 13 was Moody Construction. That
statement was in error. Though Moody Construction
does a lot of work for the City of Atlanta, for Fire Station 13 the
contractor is Mooney Construction. Sincere apologies for the mistake.

East Atlanta CourtWatch Kickoff
|

EACA's Day in Court
On Friday, February 26, members
of EACA and other Atlanta-in-DeKalb residents met at the DeKalb
County Courthouse in downtown Decatur. DeKalb County District
Attorney Gwendolyn Keyes Fleming, Assistant District Attorney Jill
Polster, Community Prosecutor Dana Lawrence, and the Superior Court
Judge Tangela Barrie met with residents to discuss their concerns about the judicial process and how community members can
get more involved. This meeting was the first step in a CourtWatch
program for EACA. The CourtWatch effort includes following
cases throughout the judicial process, as well as
appearing in court when we believe it can positively impact the outcome
of a criminal proceeding. If you wish to
participate, please contact Public Safety Chair Myron Polster at publicsafety@eaca.net,
and we can add you
to the CourtWatch e-mail list. No upfront committment of time is
required, so you can keep up with what's going
on and get involved as your schedule allows.
All crimes committed in East Atlanta are handled in the
DeKalb County judicial system, whether committed in the City of
Atlanta or Unincorporated DeKalb County. For more
on the emerging CourtWatch program in East Atlanta, or to learn
more about Public Safety efforts in our community, please visit the East Atlanta Security Patrol and SAFE websites.
EASP Updated Contact Information
As
part of the East Atlanta Security Patrol's efforts to
improve communications with the neighborhood, we are changing our e-mail
address effective immediately to easp610@gmail.com. This is part of our continuing
effort to have all voicemail, e-mail and texts funneled into a single
account. This makes it easier to track your calls or incoming requests,
and makes all of this information easily accessible to the EASP
volunteer
responsible for handling communications that day. The next step will be
offering chat capability, which should be available during the month of
February. (Also as on ongoing reminder as of January 4, 2010, EASP
has officially changed its phone number to 404-954-1568.)
Don't forget that the EASP responds to calls or contact from all
community
members. Whether it's a crime in progress or an ongoing issue such as
barking dogs or drug dealing, give us a call and we'll involve the
appropriate resources
to attempt to resolve your issue. While this may seem like a
disincentive
to become a member of the EASP, members do receive tangible benefits
such as
extra patrols when out of town and patrol coverage based on the number
of
members in your street or area.
To learn more about the East Atlanta Security
Patrol, view updated news and notes or to enroll, visit the
EASP website.
There
is a 50% discount for longtime residents and those 65+. To qualify, you
must
have lived at the same address for 20 years or be over age 65. We also
have a 20% discount for members of an APD-sanctioned Neighborhood
Watch.
Please contact us if you're interested in setting up a Neighborhood
Watch on
your street.

EACA Beautification Day
|
Hi all,
I hope everyone is out enjoying
this spectacular weather. Please join us for more great weather next
Sunday March 14th @ noon for some Spring cleaning in the village.
We'll be meeting in front of or across
from Joe's
Coffee shop to start out our efforts. We'll again be tackling litter and
sticker
removal, graffiti cover-up or removal on public signs, and one or two
special
projects.
Let's show Atlanta how great EAST
Atlanta is with a
large turnout. Bring a friend! The more folks we have the further out
from
the Village we can go.
In the meantime, don't let this one day
of the
month be your only involvement in Neighborhood betterment. If you are
out
enjoying a walk in the neighborhood, please take a garbage bag with you
and pick
up the odd piece of trash. If you
see large
dumping, please let me know an address. If you see a tire, or pile of
tires,
please jot down the address and let me know - Tire Round-Up is just
around the
corner.
Please encourage your neighbors to pick
up trash in
front of their houses!
Thanks Everyone! I hope to see you out
this
coming Sunday,

EACA Receives Environmental Grant
|
The City of Atlanta recently awarded grants to qualifying
communities and nonprofits for the purchase of trees to be voluntarily
planted in April. On Wednesday, March 3, EACA received word that its
application was successful, and that $1,969 has been awarded for the
purchase of 15 trees in the neighborhood.
A big thank you to Alex Levy and Ted Hitch, EACA's Beautification
Chair, for conducting a tree inventory of interested property owners and
putting the successful application together! When the trees arrive,
EACA will be seeking volunteers to assist in the planting -- several
property owners who requested trees are homebound seniors.

THINKING ABOUT SCHOOLS?
Which area
elementary school is designed with classrooms surrounding a secluded courtyard
with a new playground, picnic tables and an organic garden watered from rain
barrels?
Here's a
hint. It's the same school with its own computer lab, media center,
science lab and dedicated art and music rooms.
Need another
hint? This school has low student-teacher ratios and state of the art
interactive white boards in most classrooms.
Here's your last
hint. If you live in East Atlanta, your elementary school age child is
guaranteed a spot. And it's
FREE.
Come see why
parents are buzzing about East Atlanta's public elementary school!
Burgess-Peterson
Academy will host tours for prospective families on February 24, March 17,
and March 31 at 10 AM and 7 PM.
The school is
located at
480 Clifton Street at the corner of Glenwood and Clifton, less than
a mile east of East Atlanta Village.
Childcare will be
available for the 10 AM tours.

NCS/ACMS Merger
|
After many meetings and much
input from various stakeholders, a draft version of the charter
petition for the Atlanta Neighborhood Charter School is now
completed. If you are interested in the impact of the NCS/ACMS merger,
please read the linked document. The time for any remaining comments or
concerns from the community is now. There will be two more public
opportunities to ask questions or provide input. The first and best
chance is tonight, March 8th at 7:00 at ACMS, 820 Essie Avenue in
Ormewood Park. After that, there will be a joint meeting of both
boards at 6:30 pm at NCS on March 15th, where the charter will be voted
on. You may also contact one of our East Atlanta representatives this
week, Kelly Simons (simons@visa-law.net) or
Myron Polster (myron.polster@comcast.net), to express your views or
ask questions.
One of the biggest questions emerging from these discussions is
the nature of the merged school's attendance zones and the impact on
East Atlanta families. The proposed attendance zones for the combined
school will remain as is. For K-5, East Atlanta remains in the
secondary attendance zone, while for 6-8 we remain in the primary
attendance zone. Particularly for those East Atlanta families looking
at NCS for kindergarten, it continues to be uncertain how many spots if
any there will be from year to year. The waiting list for the 2010-2011
school year is much shorter than it was for 2009-2010, but the reasons
for that are not totally clear. Some of that may be increased
competition from Parkside and Imagine Wesley, there may be fewer
school-age kids from the primary attendance zone of Grant Park and
Ormewood Park, or some other factors may be at work.
As for grades 6-8, children from East Atlanta have not had any
trouble enrolling at ACMS in its first few years of existence. In fact,
more kids from the secondary attendance zone are currently enrolled
than from the primary attendance zone, which includes all of NPU-W. One
of the big changes resulting from the merger is that 5th graders will
have priority for registration in grade 6. Whether that means that
more kids from the K-5 primary attendance zone will continue onto 6th
grade is anyone's guess, but that could potentially take away spots
away in grades 6-8 from East Atlanta families. Grade 6 will have
capacity for 72 kids versus 60 in the fifth grade, so for most of the
life of this 5 year charter, it appears likely that middle school access
will still be good for East Atlanta. This is because NCS is usually
well under the 60 child capacity in their fifth grade classes, and quite
a few kids don't continue on to ACMS for middle school.
The charter petition is for 5 years, so if you have young
children, this merger may be of interest to you. Please take some time
to review the charter and provide input in whatever manner you desire.
