Want Some Free Trees?

Want some Free Trees?

Funded by the tree recompense fund collected under the City of Atlanta Tree Ordinance, the Trees for Atlanta's Sustainability 2010 Grant Program will award grants to communities and non-profit organizations for the purchase of trees to be voluntarily planted in April.

We have to compete for the Grant, which will be administered by the city's Arborist Division.  Trees must be planted on private property or on public school property, churches, or other property where public benefits accrue.  Qualifying proposals MUST identify areas where trees will be planted, what trees are desired, and obtain a commitment for their care by the home-owner and community members.

Upon request, EACA Beautification will provide you with a list of available trees and the specific conditions to qualify.  If you want a tree planted in your front yard, within 25-30 feet of the curb, please contact EACA's Beautification Committee ASAP at:  beautification@eaca.net

President's Day EAPN Playgroup
If you missed our first big kickoff playgroup, don't worry - we've already got our second one planned. For those folks who aren't sure how to celebrate President's Day, we'd like to provide an option: Bring your kids (and yourself) over to Brownwood Park. We'll have games and activities inside the Rec Center (if the... weather is unpleasant) and of course the playground is right outside (if the weather is more 'Spring-like'). We also may have some live music on hand as well - stay tuned!

Let your kids meet some old friends, make some new friends, and perhaps you might connect with a few neighbors while you're at it...

Major Changes for the East Atlanta Security Patrol
EASP UPDATE

As part of the East Atlanta Security Patrol's efforts to improve communications with the neighborhood, we are changing our e-mail address effective immediately to easp610@gmail.com, although the old address of securitypatrol@eaca.net will continue to function for some time.  This is part of our continuing effort to have all voicemail, e-mail and texts funneled into a single account.  This makes it easier to track your calls or incoming requests, and makes all of this information easily accessible to the EASP volunteer responsible for handling communications that day.  The next step will be offering chat capability, which should be available during the month of February.   (Also as on ongoing reminder as of January 4, 2010, EASP has officially changed its phone number to 404-954-1568.)

Don't forget that the EASP responds to calls or contact from all community members.  Whether it's a crime in progress or an ongoing issue such as barking dogs or drug dealing, give us a call and we'll involve the appropriate resources to attempt to resolve your issue.  While this may seem like a disincentive to become a member of the EASP, members do receive tangible benefits such as extra patrols when out of town and patrol coverage based on the number of members in your street or area.

On Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. at Branan Towers, Major John Dalton will be making his first appearance at an EACA meeting.  Hopefully he will have some of his other senior staff in attendance, and possibly Deputy Chief Finley as well.  Please come prepared with questions for the Major.  The EASP has already met with the Major as part of our ongoing coordination of patrol efforts with the on-duty police officers.  So far, he's off to a good start, as January had the lowest number of crimes in East Atlanta in at least four years.  This would be a great time to come out and show your support for Major Dalton and Zone 6.

Also on Tuesday evening at the EACA meeting, we'll be announcing the start of our official East Atlanta Courtwatch group.  As part of the official kickoff, we'll be visiting the Dekalb DA's office on February 26th from 8:30 - 10 a.m.  There are a very limited number of spaces available for this trip, and we are offering them to Security Patrol members first.  We do ask that you plan to be a participant in the Courtwatch effort going forward if you RSVP, with the minimum commitment being one hour per month, although that does not have to be time spent in court.  On Tuesday, we'll open up spaces for the trip to the rest of the community, if any remain.  Contact the EASP directly to reserve your spot.  In addition to learning more about how we can help assist APD and the DA's office to keep criminals off the street, we'll have a chance to meet with Gwen Keyes Fleming, our current DA, and some of the prosecutors and investigators in her office.  We're also planning on a session with one of the Dekalb Superior Court judges.

To learn more about the East Atlanta Security Patrol or to enroll, visit the EASP website (http://patrol.eaca.net). There is a 50% discount for longtime residents and those 65+. To qualify, you must have lived at the same address for 20 years or be over age 65.  We also have a 20% discount for members of an APD-sanctioned Neighborhood Watch.  Please contact us if you're interested in setting up a Neighborhood Watch on your street.

If you have additional questions, please direct them to easp610@gmail.com, or call EACA Public Safety Chair Myron Polster at 404-429-8815.

Y.E.A. Youth Ensemble Atlanta
CELEBRATING OUR 20TH ANNIVERSARY

Founded in 1990, YEA has helped thousands of Atlanta youth to change their world. Utilizing the power of the arts YEA has fostered the personal growth of hundreds of young people from childhood to adulthood. Along the way, these talented and dedicated performers have developed crucial communication and life skills that have resulted in heightened cultural awareness, a commitment to excellence and community service and an appreciation for diversity.

While we are best known as a professional theatre company for youth, our main charge is not to create great shows and talented artists. YEA's primary programming goal is to develop youth with the skills and desire to succeed at whatever they do in life. Through the ensemble activities, members become empowered, develop self-esteem and confidence, explore the keys to problem solving and learn to face the challenges in the world around them. There are no greater tools for success in life than these.
