 Greetings!
EACA Logo
Hello!

This week's newsletter is packed full of great information from, among other topics, schools and public safety to parks and gardens.

Just to highlight a few items: As this is the time of year that schools begin to accept applications for next year's enrollment, this week's newsletter draws attention to several information sessions for various schools.  Furthermore,
Public Safety includes last weeks stats as well as January trends in addition to further EASP changes, and EACA is highlighting February's Yard of the Month!

If that wasn't enough there is also a Strut announcement.

Enjoy!!

President's Day EAPN Playgroup
If you missed our first big kickoff playgroup, don't worry - we've already got our second one planned. For those folks who aren't sure how to celebrate President's Day, we'd like to provide an option: Bring your kids (and yourself) over to Brownwood Park. We'll have games and activities inside the Rec Center (if the... weather is unpleasant) and of course the playground is right outside (if the weather is more 'Spring-like'). We also may have some live music on hand as well - stay tuned!

Let your kids meet some old friends, make some new friends, and perhaps you might connect with a few neighbors while you're at it...

Date: Monday, February 15, 2010

Time: 10:00am - 12:00pm

205 Emerson Avenue, SE

Major Changes for the East Atlanta Security Patrol

EASP Update

As part of the East Atlanta Security Patrol's efforts to improve communications with the neighborhood, we are changing our e-mail address effective immediately to easp610@gmail.com, although the old address of securitypatrol@eaca.net will continue to function for some time.  This is part of our continuing effort to have all voicemail, e-mail and texts funneled into a single account.  This makes it easier to track your calls or incoming requests, and makes all of this information easily accessible to the EASP volunteer responsible for handling communications that day.  The next step will be offering chat capability, which should be available during the month of February.   (Also as on ongoing reminder as of January 4, 2010, EASP has officially changed its phone number to 404-954-1568.)

Don't forget that the EASP responds to calls or contact from all community members.  Whether it's a crime in progress or an ongoing issue such as barking dogs or drug dealing, give us a call and we'll involve the appropriate resources to attempt to resolve your issue.  While this may seem like a disincentive to become a member of the EASP, members do receive tangible benefits such as extra patrols when out of town and patrol coverage based on the number of members in your street or area.

Crime in East Atlanta for January was down from levels in recent months, but it's unlikely to remain this low indefinitely.  One of the things that continue to make crime such a problem is the reluctance of so many residents to call 911.  If you hear an alarm going off at a neighbor's house or see a suspicious person or vehicle, call 911 immediately, then call the East Atlanta Security Patrol at 404-954-1568. We had an incident on Friday night where someone was knocking on doors after 11:00 pm yet no one called 911, and the burglars broke into a house where no was home.  If one of the neighbors had called 911, APD might have had a chance to prevent a crime or apprehend the burglars.  Never worry that your call isn't important or that you'll divert the police from a more urgent call.  The police prioritize calls based on their importance, so calling in suspicious activity is always the right thing to do.

This past Wednesday afternoon just before 4:30 pm, there was a significant shooting incident near the corner of Stallings and Flat Shoals.  Eleven shell casings were located at that intersection, and two homes on Flat Shoals were struck by bullets, including one that went through a window.  It appears that one person involved in the incident was struck in the arm by a bullet, but they fled the scene.  The police are looking for at least two people connected to this shooting.  One may be Josh aka Hot, who was the one supposedly shot.  The primary shooter may be a woman named Nadine Barber.  Other people who may be involved in this incident may go by names of Little Willie and Scarface.  We'll update the EASP website as more information becomes available.  Should you have any information that may be pertinent to this incident, please contact the EASP at 404-954-1568 and we'll direct you to the appropriate party at Zone 6.

To learn more about the East Atlanta Security Patrol or to enroll, visit the EASP website (http://patrol.eaca.net). There is a 50% discount for longtime residents and those 65+. To qualify, you must have lived at the same address for 20 years or be over age 65.  We also have a 20% discount for members of an APD-sanctioned Neighborhood Watch.  Please contact us if you're interested in setting up a Neighborhood Watch on your street.

February Featured EAV Yard of the Month
Checklist ImageThis year EACA would like to highlight a special garden in East Atlanta. Our community has many talented Gardeners with a wealth of experiences to share.  EACA will be featuring one of the gardens and sharing the Gardener's unique story each month.

EAV Yard of the Month ~ February  2010
Glynis Ward, Flower Lady

How long have you been gardening and what inspired you to dig in the dirt?
I've been gardening on and off since I was about two years old.  Carrots and potatoes inspired me to dig in the garden. I loved growing them, then sitting for hours as a kid washing them. My parents used to joke, you never had to peel the veggies I grew!!

What style of garden do you consider your garden in EAV?
I basically have two separate gardens. The first is an herb based cottage garden. The second, which is currently in progress, is edible landscaping. Everything is organic.

How long have you been gardening in EAV and what drew you to live in the community?
I started to garden the spring after we purchased our home about 12 years ago. We were drawn to East Atlanta Village because of the eclectic mix of people - the diversity of race, social and economic backgrounds, and sexual orientation made this the perfect home for us. We also liked that the neighborhood is historic without historic designation (meaning I have the freedom to garden as I wish) and the properties a nice size for an inner city community.

What, in your opinion, is unique about gardening in EAV?

In East Atlanta "anything goes" which is why I really looked forward to gardening here.  You can garden in your front yard, or your back yard. Plow rows, plant a sculpture...anything at all! So many communities have to deal with Home Owners Associations and Gladys Kravitz neighbors. In East Atlanta you are free to do as you please.

East Atlanta Strut!!
Support the Strut!

It's time to begin preparations for the 2010 East Atlanta Strut!  As many of you know, the 2009 Strut was not the revenue-generator everyone hoped it would be because of the rain.  Despite the weather, the event marched on, and if you went, you know we had a great time nevertheless!

This year, to get the Strut on it's feet again, organizers are hoping to raise $6,000 in start-up funds.  Stay tuned for upcoming fundraisers in the neighborhood that benefit the Strut's planning efforts!

In the meantime, the first Strut planning meeting will be this Wednesday, February 3, at Branan Towers.  Please come at 7:30 pm with your ideas and energy to make 2010 the best year yet!
