East Atlanta Parents Network
|
Parents: Ever have one of these moments? You're walking through the neighborhood with your child (or children) and you see another person with a stroller. They look like they have a child the same age as yours and you think "How do I not know that person!?!" Well, you're not alone, and something is finally being done about it. Introducing EAPN - the East Atlanta Parents Network.
EAPN is designed to help local parents meet, share experiences and discuss issues important to them and their children. EAPN will in the coming months organize a variety of events and gatherings to help East Atlanta parents get together - these will include playgroups, school tours, and visits to local attractions, among others - and will provide an updated listing of various links of interest and resources available to kids and their parents in and around the East Atlanta neighborhood. EAPN is geared toward providing a forum for, and connections among, East Atlanta children of all ages and their parents, with the belief that in fostering the ties among friends and neighbors, we help to improve the community for all residents. EAPN grew out of the community-based organization LEAP - Linking Education And Parents - a group focused on fostering quality public education for the East Atlanta community, but EAPN is open to parents in adjacent neighborhoods and to any local children, regardless of where they attend school. A website is currently in the works (targeting a launch in Spring '10), but you can visit EAPN on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/EAPNet. There are numerous events posted already, and several others in the works - including a kickoff playgroup in January. Keep your eyes open for announcements regarding the big initial meet-and-greet. If you have any questions, you can send a message via Facebook, or send an e-mail to eapn.net@gmail.com.

Major Changes for the East Atlanta Security Patrol |
As of January 4, 2010, EASP will officially change its phone number to 404-954-1568. This number and the associated functionality is currently being tested, and we are having several EASP members participate in the testing. This change is being made for a variety of reasons:
- Will provide a dedicated phone number and voicemail for EASP business
- Will enable multiple people to receive EASP phone calls, text messages, and to check and respond to voicemails
- Will allow coverage of EASP phones more hours of the day
- Will enable faster response times to calls and text messages
Will provide capability for calls to be routed directly to officers' cell phones during their shifts There is no cost to our membership for these changes, and we will continue to use 100% of our money toward patrols of Beat 610 in East Atlanta. At this time, we are not planning to implement the feature where calls are routed directly to an EASP officer's cell phone if they are on duty. If and when we feel it will improve the EASP service, the capability will be ready to use. We encourage everyone within EACA boundaries to contact the EASP for assistance with public safety issues, whether a member or not. The geographic membership area of EACA shall have a west border of Moreland Avenue, north to I-20. The northern border shall be I-20 to Flat Shoals Road, where the border will go east of I-20 to include that portion of the City of Atlanta east of I-20. From there, the eastern border will be Fayetteville Road to Eastland Road and its intersection with Moreland Avenue. If you are reporting an issue that requires an immediate police presence, always call 911 first, then contact the EASP. The reason that the EASP is opening up to calls from all areas within EACA boundaries is that crime knows no borders. We have worked very hard to establish relationships with Dekalb County Police that are similar to the ones we already had with APD's Zone 6. While we can't send an EASP officer to an address in unincorporated Dekalb, we can contact officers in Dekalb and can alert APD of possible perpetrators fleeing into Zone 6, or moving their criminal activity across the border. It's important for all police entities to work together, and this is just one more step to help facilitate that cooperation. Hopefully one of the next steps will be a Security Patrol dedicated to the unincorporated Dekalb County area.
To learn more about the East Atlanta Security Patrol or to enroll, visit the EASP website ( http://patrol.eaca.net). There is a 50% discount for longtime residents and those 65+. To qualify, you must have lived at the same address for 20 years or be over age 65. We also have a 20% discount for members of an APD-sanctioned Neighborhood Watch. Please contact us if you're interested in setting up a Neighborhood Watch on your street. If you have additional questions, please direct them to securitypatrol@eaca.net, or call EACA Public Safety Chair Myron Polster at 404-429-8815. |
Recycle EAV Program Kicks Off in the Village |
On December 2nd, the half-year plus efforts of East Atlanta Village business employees and residents came to fruition with the kick-off of the business district's formal recycling program. Prompted by the growth of East Atlanta's bars and restaurants and relative lack of recycling across these establishments (Midway Pub was previously recycling), the group saw a need to be remedied via a free-access community recycling program for the Village.
A group of local artists who have lived and worked in East Atlanta for a number of years came together (as the Tentacled Spectacle) to vet the program, explore and finalize contract options, and to fundraise for the program's funding. The group is led by Kate Crosby and Julia Hill.
Fundraising and promotional efforts have included:
-
CarnEvil, the initial fundraising event held at Lenny's in September
-
the Strut festival, where we won the judge's choice award for the Strut parade.
-
Chomp and Stomp Chili Cook off festival in Cabbagetown,
-
Two separate Halloween events at the Atlanta Brewing Company
-
White Space's "Forever Green" show
- The Art Papers Auction (Upcoming this February)
Thus far, funds have been raised to cover 5 months of the program. At current volume (8 bins with weekly pick-up), we need to raise $100 to cover each additional month.
Our initial goal was to have 2 stations of bins located in the Village. The group was working with the Earl first, but recently the bar decided to contract Conex Recycling on their own. This is wonderful news; as it means one of the highest volume bars in the EAV is now green, a great step in the right direction. Now the bins are centralized to one side of the neighborhood. Eight bins are currently placed behind 529.
The bins went up December 2nd. East Atlanta resident John Mlade kindly donated recycling bins for the inside of participating bars. The Flatiron also began on Dec. 2nd. The hope is to slowly get other bars involved and eventually expand and sustain this operation through donations and fundraisers.
We would love any help the community (EABA, individual establishments, residents, etc.) would like to provide. Any advice, money, or networking you could give us would be greatly appreciated! Below is additional information about our group's mission and details about Conex Recycling.

EACA Public Safety -- 911 Calls |
For several years, many residents living in the city of Atlanta have been made aware that calling 404-658-6666 is the preferred way to call Atlanta 911 from a cell phone. This addresses the problem that when you call 911 from a cell phone, you may be routed to the incorrect 911 center, particularly if you are calling from near the Atlanta and unincorporated Dekalb County border. For residents who wish to reach Dekalb County 911, there did not appear to be any solution to this problem. The EACA public safety committee has been working on this issue for some time, and on the recommendation of the Dekalb County Public Safety Director William Miller and the head of their 911 call center, we are passing along their solution. Until better technology is available, please use the non-emergency number of 404-294-2911 but only for calls from your cell phone that you wish to direct to Dekalb 911. There is a slightly higher priority given to normal 911 calls, but generally there is little or no difference in response time. And the operators answering the calls are exactly the same operators who answer 911 calls. To see if this system really works, we'd like your feedback. Just drop a note to publicsafety@eaca.net and tell us about your experience with this number, good or bad. Try to record how long before your call is answered and whether you receive any feedback that this is the wrong number to call. We do feel certain that no one will hang up on you and ask you to call 911, or we wouldn't support their solution. In the short run, we'd like Dekalb County to adopt a similar system to Atlanta where an alternate number works exactly the same as 911, and we're still pushing for that. In the interim, this recommendation is very close to the Atlanta solution, but we need your feedback to see how well it works. The latest national research indicates that one of every three calls to 911 come from a cell phone, up from about 25% just two years ago. This is an increasing problem and one that has resulted in people dying because their call was routed to the incorrect 911 center. Many parts of the country are solving the problem by combining 911 centers, and that could be an option here in Atlanta depending on how soon technology is expected to be able to resolve this problem. |

MARTA Invites Customers to Celebrate the Transit System's 30th Anniversary |

MARTA invites customers to celebrate the transit systems 30th anniversary of combined bus, rail and paratransit (MARTA Mobility) service during its annual Customer Appreciation event from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, December 16, 2009, at the Five Points Station.
MARTA will commemorate this important milestone by providing music and prizes to thank customers for their unwavering support and partnership over the years.
On June 30, 1979, MARTA began its rail operations on the East Line from Avondale to Georgia State station. Thirty years later, MARTA has grown into an over $6 billion public asset serving DeKalb and Fulton Counties. MARTA is the only multi-modal transit system in the state with a network that includes 130 bus routes and 38 rail stations on nearly 48 miles of track.
With 30 years of history and experience, MARTA serves as the backbone for transit in this region. Thanks to the efforts of our past leaders and community to envision and support the creation of MARTA, the transit system has helped Atlanta and the surrounding region to provide quality mobility options for residents and visitors, build a more thriving economy, and become more environmentally sustainable.
Throughout December, MARTA will celebrate this significant milestone and continue to promote just how critical transit is to the success and quality of life in our region and state. MARTA stands poised with its partners to move forward with a new regional transit vision that will better serve our communities and carry us successfully into the next 30 years. |
