Hello!

Yet again there are many neighborhood activities taking place this week.

Tomorrow evening, there will be a southeast Atlanta mayoral forum (details below).

Come support East Atlanta this weekend at both Burgess-Peterson's Fall Carnival and also at the Brownwood Park Who's Your Daddy Dog Show and BBQ Cook-Off (volunteers sought for both events and further details can be found below).

Burgess-Peterson Academy Fall Carnival

Come out and celebrate at Burgess-Peterson Academy! We will be hosting our annual Fall Carnival on this upcoming Saturday, October 24th, from 10am-1pm. Please come out and join in the fun. We will have games, jumpies, and lots of goodies for kids of all ages. All monies raised will be used to support innovative ideas and programs for the children of Burgess-Peterson Academy. For additional information or if you are interested in volunteering, please contact Principal Robin Robbins at rcrobbins@atlanta.k12.ga.us or 404-802-3400. We look forward to seeing the East Atlanta Community!

Who's Your Daddy Dog Show & BBQ Cook-Off!
Saturday, October 24 - Noon to 10 p.m.
East Atlanta loves dogs, all kinds of dogs and the folks around here have a extra soft spot for rescues.  This Who's Your Daddy event celebrates all those who have been asked "What kind of dog is THAT?" more times than they can count and love guessing because they know their dog is one-of-a-kind whether pure-bred or not. Register your dog using the form HERE.

East Atlantans also love to eat and BBQ, whether is be from the church parking lot, gas station corner or backyard is a favorite around here (if you eat meat with your meal that is).  So how about a cook-off to let secrets be shared (or not) and stories swapped. Find the cook-off entry form HERE.

Add some music, some games, food to eat, beer to drink, best-friends on hand and neighbors all around.  Bring a blanket, the family, sunscreen, and walk on over to Brownwood Park to celebrate East Atlanta any number of ways with blue sky overhead and green space all around.

What is going on:
  • Dog Show to display the pride.
  • BBQ Cook-Off to taste what all the boasting is about.
  • Bluegrass music to enjoy while sipping cold beer and sucking the sauce from your fingers.
  • Chicken bingo and a raffle - win something without owning a dog or a smoker:  Airtran tickets, restaurant gift certificates, theater tickets
  • Movie showing of Best in Show to cap the night.

 EACA Seeking New Leadership
EACA is actively seeking new leadership for next year.  Current President Jelena Crawford will not be eligible to return next year and current Secretary Lea Johnston will be welcoming her firstborn into her family.  This is a great chance to improve your neighborhood in areas such as Public Safety, Code Enforcement, Land Use and Zoning, Education and Transportation to name just a few.  Elections will be held at the December 14th EACA meeting for all four officer positions, including Vice President and Treasurer.

To learn more, contact one of the nominating committee members, either Henry Bryant at 404-377-6148 (or hbryant@mindspring.com) or Myron Polster at 404-429-8815 (or myron.polster@comcast.net).
 Kingfisher Academy seeking Board Members
Kingfisher Academy is looking for someone in the East Atlanta neighborhood to serve on our Board of Directors.  This person would be making a committment of about two hours every other month with some reading in advance of the meeting on e-mail.  They would be somewhat aware of school and education issues, able to help create a vision for the school, and generally have some knowledge of how families and schools interact.  For more information, please phone Debbie Gathmann, the director, at 404-624-0807.

Beltline Corridor Environmental Study Fall Public Meetings
MARTA and ABI are holding a series of meetings in No vember 2009 to present progress-to-date and solicit feedback from the public on the analysis of potential transit and trails routes. The purpose of the meetings are to:
  • Inform the public of the study status;
  • Present results of the evaluation process; and
  • Solicit feedback regarding the evaluation results to inform upcoming decision-making.

Revisions of the technical evaluation process will take place using the information and responses gathered from the public meetings. This insight along with ad ditional technical work will help to bring the BeltLine Corridor Environmental Study to completion with a Tier 1 Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). The final Tier 1 EIS in turn aids the decision-makers in the selection of a preferred transit and trails route.

Feedback Desired from the Community
Public meetings get the community involved in the study process and help to collect vital information that to use in the study's planning, design, and engineering outcomes. One of the BeltLine's long-standing objectives is to get the people of Atlanta involved in the entire BeltLine process, from inception to operation.

Please attend your Southeast Study Group public meeting on: November 9, 2009, 6:30-8:30 PM at:
Trees Atlanta
225 Chester Ave. SE
Atlanta, GA 30316
