 SOPO Bicycle Cooperative Needs Volunteers!
Sopo needs shop volunteers!  You don't need to know lots about fixing bikes to help out.

You can...
  • greet people and explain what's going on,
  • show people where to find things,
  • learn about repairs with the person you're helping,
  • make sure people are using the right tool for the right job (no hammering with wrenches, for example),
  • accept, record, and sort donations,
  • help with general upkeep, and
  • keep track of wandering tools, bikes, and other things mistakenly carried away.
How do I become a volunteer?
  • Fill out THIS application (it's real quick).
  • Attend Volunteer Orientation (4th Monday of the month at 7 pm at the shop plus one day that week so you can shadow a more seasoned volunteer).
  • Be down for the cause: volunteers help people learn by allowing them to do their own work and by enforcing our rules that make the shop a positive place to be.
And then...
Volunteer at a minimum of two shop sessions per month.

What are the benefits of being a shop volunteer?
  • You can come to Volunteer Night (2nd Monday of the month at 7 pm).  It's a chance to work on your own bike with fewer people around and a great opportunity to meet the rest of the volunteers.
  • You're making a GIGANTIC impact on the health and well being of Atlanta and the people in it.
  • You're making sure Sopo stays open and operating smoothly.
  • At the end of the month, your name gets entered into a raffle.  The more you volunteer, the better your chances of winning.

Inside the Writer's Studio with Jessica Handler - Thursday, July 23rd - 7:00 p.m.Checklist Image
Invisible Sisters is Handler's powerful tale of coming of age as the daughter of progressive Jewish parents who moved to Atlanta to participate in the social-justice movement of the 1960s; as a healthy sister living in the shadow of her siblings' illnesses; as a daughter in a family torn apart by impossible circumstances and overwhelming grief; and as a young woman struggling to find and redefine herself anew after her sisters' deaths. Invisible Sisters is a stirring and evocative chronicle of love and loss--not just to survive a family tragedy, but to build a new life in the aftermath.

Jessica Handler's nonfiction has appeared in Brevity.com, More MagazineSouthern Arts Journal, and Ars Medica. An essay derived from Invisible Sisters was nominated for a 2008 Pushcart Prize, and her work has received Honorable Mention for the Penelope Niven Creative Nonfiction Prize. A teacher of creative writing, she lives in Atlanta, Georgia.

Meet Author Dan Bobinski - Friday, July 24th - 7:30 p.m.
Can passion be taught? Can it be created? Too often, people try to manipulate passion. To get real results, team leaders must create the right conditions for passion to emerge. Those conditions must be nurtured, not unlike a gardener creating the right conditions for his plants to flourish.

Creating Passion-Driven Teams: How to Stop Micromanaging and Motivate People to Top Performance(Career Press, 2009, 220 pp., pbk., $15.99) will make your job easier. Get the inside scoop on the secrets of success that motivate teams to top performance. In the matrix of workplace roles and responsibilities, managers are pivotal to corporate success. Yet a manager is often the unsung hero who must adapt to demands from all sides--and do so with little or no training, and without mentorship for the role. Learn from Dan Bobinski, who draws from 20 years of consulting experience, extensive studies of best practices, and the latest in neuroscience research.

Dan Bobinski is the president and CEO of Leadership Development, Inc., and director at the Center for Workplace Excellence. For more than 20 years Dan has coached and trained managers and leaders in the Fortune 500 as well as small and mid-sized businesses.
