|
This year's BATL event commemorating the historic Battle of Atlanta that took place in the neighborhoods of southeast Atlanta will be back this year with more living history action and a rare opportunity to get inside of the famous East Lake Golf Club. Plans are still being finalized and firmed up for the weekend of July 17th through the 19th. BATL has always been held around the weekend nearest the date of the actual battle on July 22nd. It returns with the van tours, a new cemetery tour joining the usual ones, walking tours, 5K race, music concerts, living history re-enactors, author talks and storytelling festival that people have come to expect. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: We are looking for some volunteer hosts/hostesses who wouldn't mind
providing a bed and bath for some of the ladies (we also may have a
couple of children). They are some of the homefront people who come
from long distance and will be staying over night Friday and/or
Saturday to do living history. They should have their own
transportation and can eat out or on the homefront site. They are
volunteers and some East Atlanta hospitality would be appreciated. For more information or to volunteer as a host, please contact: Henry Bryant 404-377-6148 or hbryant@mindspring.com. |

East Atlanta Security Patrol News & Information |
The East Atlanta Security Patrol (EASP) has lots of good news to report this week. The most obvious is the continued decline in burglaries in Beat 610, the portion of East Atlanta within the Atlanta city limits. The trends continue to show major declines versus the same months from 2008, but more importantly we're approaching the low levels of burglaries seen in late 2006 and early 2007. There doesn't seem to be one single factor that accounts for the decline in burglaries, so we're assuming that all of the community's efforts are contributing. We do believe that one of the contributing factors to the decline in burglaries is the EASP. The aggressive group of officers currently employed, all veteran officers familiar with our neighborhood, has made a major difference. The large number of new members has also helped, as we've been able to increase patrols in some areas that traditionally see higher rates of crime. We're very excited to see new members on streets like Piper Circle and Bouldercrest, as that area has been hit hard by crime in recent months. And just this past week we were able to add another permanent evening shift. While we've always focused patrols on weekdays during the day, it's become apparent that we can help reduce crime even further with more evening and weekend hours. On July 1st, the EASP will be updating its routes yet again to better reflect where our members live. If you've been thinking about joining, now is a great time to join with neighbors on your street to gain more frequent patrols. We've seen very good results where neighbors join in large numbers, especially on streets like Marbut, McWilliams and Milton Place. Patrols are not equal for everyone, as we consider that a disincentive to join. If your street can sign up 20 members, you'll get more frequent patrol coverage than a street that signs up 2 members. Also on July 1st, we will be implementing our new and improved system for helping to protect your property while you're out of town. Members can send a single form to us before they leave town, and we'll forward that form to APD. You'll also have the option of receiving additional patrols from Safe Watch, a group of local residents who walk or drive through your area. Safe Watch volunteers will not be given your home address, but if you live at 1520 Glenwood, they will be asked to patrol the 1500 block of Glenwood. Finally, we've upgraded our notification process, so you may tell EASP as late as the day before you're leaving town that you need extra patrols while you're gone. We really want all members to alert us when they're away, and to have as many eyes as possible on their homes at all hours of the day and night. EASP continues to work with the community in other ways as well. We have a partnership to provide security for the EAV Farmer's Market fully funded by a Foundation grant, and we're working with EABA to provide EASP coverage in the Village for the Taste of East Atlanta event on July 16th. To answer any questions about EASP and our new services, we'll be having a web chat from 8-10 pm on Tuesday, June 30th. Look for more details next week, or you can visit our news page next week for more information. The EASP news page is available to anyone and is located at http://patrol.eaca.net/index/news. You can also be alerted to the details of the web chat by joining our Twitter group. The Twitter group is open to anyone who has a Twitter account, just search for EASP and follow the instructions.
To learn more about the East Atlanta Security Patrol or to enroll, visit the EASP website (http://patrol.eaca.net). The cost to join the patrol is $50 per quarter, with a 50% discount for longtime residents and those 65+. To qualify, you must have lived at the same address for 20 years or be over age 65. We also have a 20% discount for members of an APD-sanctioned Neighborhood Watch. Please contact us if you're interested in setting up a Neighborhood Watch on your street. If you have additional questions, please direct them to securitypatrol@eaca.net, or call EACA Public Safety Chair Myron Polster at 404-429-8815. |

Bound to Be Read Books Tuesday, June 23rd Spiritual Book Club, The Power of Intention: Learning to Co-Create Your World Your Way by Dr. Wayne W. Dyer - 7:00 p.m
The Spiritual Book Club kicks off with The Power of Intention: Learning to Co-Create Your World Your Way (Hay House, 2005, pbk., 272 pp., reg. $14.95; sale $13.46) by Dr. Wayne W. Dyer for its Summer 2009 selection. It meets quarterly to discuss books that enlighten readers and assist in personal growth.
Intention is generally viewed as a pit-bull kind of determination propelling one to succeed at all costs by never giving up on an inner picture. In this view, an attitude that combines hard work with an indefatigable drive toward excellence is the way to succeed. However, intention is viewed very differently in this book. Dr. Wayne W. Dyer has researched intention as a force in the universe that allows the act of creation to take place. This book explores intention-not as something you do-but as an energy you're a part of. We're all intended here through the invisible power of intention. This is the first book to look at intention as a field of energy that you can access to begin co-creating your life with the power of intention.
Wayne W. Dyer, Ph.D., is an internationally renowned author and speaker in the field of self-development. He's the author of 30 books, has created many audio programs and videos, and has appeared on thousands of television and radio shows. His books Manifest Your Destiny, Wisdom of the Ages, There's a Spiritual Solution to Every Problem, and The New York Times bestsellers 10 Secrets for Success and Inner Peace, The Power of Intention, Inspiration, and Change Your Thoughts-Change Your Life have all been featured as National Public Television specials. Thursday, June 25th Mystic Poetry of Rumi - 7:30 p.m. Celebrate the poetry of Rumi set to live acoustic music, and bring your own favorite Rumi poems to read! It's Rumi Open Mic Night at Bound to Be Read Books. Mystic, poet, Sufi - Rumi and his work leap across the centuries, as relevant and shattering today as they were 800 years ago. David Hirschorn, Director of New Acropolis Cultural Association of Atlanta, will also give a brief seminar on the poet's life. This event is free and open to the public.
Friday, June 26th Book Launch Party - Georgia Spirits and Specters by Beth Dolgner - 9:00 p.m.
Join us as we celebrate the release of a new ghost-stories book, Georgia Spirits and Specters by East Atlanta Village (EAV) author, Beth Dolgner. Beth has collected ghost stories from the time she was a child, and she has published the most interesting tales in this intriguing collection. Find out if the bloody Civil War history of East Atlanta has spawned any local haints!
Join us for a "Halloween in June" party as Beth shares some of the spookiest tales from her book. She will also sign her book.
Besides refreshments, The Ghost Riders Investigation Team will be on the scene for a "mini investigation," demonstrating how anyone can utilize a compass, tape recorder, and camera to hunt for ghosts.
