East Atlanta Security Patrol News & Information
EASP Logo
The East Atlanta Security Patrol has reviewed our preliminary crime numbers for the first five months of 2009, and has compared it to the same period for the previous three years.  We've found some good news and some bad news.  On the positive side, burglaries are down 25-30% from a year ago, and the March-May period is down about 50% from a year ago.  This actually understates the good news, as more burglars are failing to gain entry to homes, and the value of the goods stolen has been somewhat less than in the past.  This points to the perpetrators being younger and arriving on foot, with teenagers entering through windows becoming the most likely scenario for a burglary.  On the negative side, burglaries for the first five months of 2009 are still over 50% higher than the same period in 2006 and 2007.  This is attributed to high burglary rates in January and February of this year, while the rates in March - May have been near the far lower rates we experienced in those same months in 2006 and 2007.

Larceny from automobiles has increased in recent years more than any other crime.  In 2006, there were 18 such crimes in the first five months of the year, and in 2008 the number was 87.  In 2009, we look to be down in this category but only 10-20%.  We do tend to see large spikes upward in this type of crime in the summer, so be sure to empty
your vehicles of ALL items, and warn your friends from the suburbs or out of town to do likewise.  Even pocket change in sight will motivate someone to smash a car window.

Pedestrian robberies are also down dramatically from a year ago.  In fact, the first five months of 2009 have been our lowest for this type of crime in any of the past four years.  A year ago was the highest with 17 in this period, while in 2009 we have had only 5.

Most other categories are running similar to recent years, with auto theft running at its lowest levels for the four years in 2009.  Larceny of property not inside a home is also running at its lowest level in the four year period.

Overall, the crime trends this year, and in the past three months in particular, have been very positive.  In light of the police furloughs in the city of Atlanta, this is even more encouraging.  Nonetheless, we need to remain vigilant.  Joining the East Atlanta Security Patrol, reinforcing your household's doors and windows, upgrading to a wireless alarm system, and forming Neighborhood Watches are all part of the way we can do our part to
make East Atlanta a safe neighborhood for our families.

Finally, we have had a large number of inquiries in the past week about a 67 year-old man (about 5'9", 140 pounds) who goes door to door asking for donations for a relative's funeral.  If this man comes to your home, call 911 and then call or text the East Atlanta Security Patrol at 404-429-8815.  Do not wait a day before you act.  This man is no different than anyone else who asks for donations at your home, or to perform any service such as landscaping or housecleaning.  It's best if you ask them to leave information (without opening the door to get it) that you can review at your leisure.  The same goes for people who ask for money in parking lots with long and involved stories.  These are almost always scams.  If you smell a rat, it's probably a rat, and you should call 911 and the Security Patrol.  The benefit of calling the Security Patrol is that we can respond to the call immediately in such instances should an officer be on duty, while APD will generally see this as a low priority call and arrive when they can.  This is not meant to encourage you to call 911 every time you see a solicitor, but if someone is checking out your house or cars, asking for handouts or offering to cut your lawn at 9 pm, please act immediately.
To learn more about the East Atlanta Security Patrol or to enroll, visit the EASP website (http://patrol.eaca.net). The cost to join the patrol is $50 per quarter, with a 50% discount for longtime residents and those 65+. To qualify, you must have lived at the same address for 20 years or be over age 65.  We also have a 20% discount for members of an APD-sanctioned Neighborhood Watch.  Please contact us if you're interested in setting up a Neighborhood Watch on your street.

If you have additional questions, please direct them to [email protected], or call EACA Public Safety Chair Myron Polster at 404-429-8815.
