Atlanta Charter Middle School Year-End Wrap-Up
|
 With
the 2008-2009 school year drawing to a close, it is a good time to look
back on another successful year at the Atlanta Charter Middle School
(ACMS). When school opened in August, students and families were
greeted with a whole new look inside the school after hundreds of
volunteers worked to beautify the campus as part of Hands on Atlanta's
"Service Juris" Day. The entering 6th grade class continued to reflect
the diversity of ACMS as a whole, with representation from 13 different
sending schools. This year's 8th grade class began as the first group
of students to spend all three years of their middle school experience
in ACMS's own home--the former Anne E. West school building.
Additionally, ACMS began the year by being recognized as a Title I
"Distinguished School" for being a school that both serves a large
percentage of students who receive free and reduced price meals and has
for three consecutive years achieved annual academic performance goals
set by the state and federal departments of education.
This year the school deepened its ties with the Coalition of Essential
Schools by sending a contingent of students, parents, and teachers to
the network's annual conference in November. Over the course of two
days in Charlotte, NC, this group attended workshops on topics such as
democratic schools, performance-based assessment, and issues of race
and class in schools. Also in the fall, ACMS enjoyed another
successful "Fall Fling", the community auction and fundraiser held
jointly with the Neighborhood Charter School. Throughout the year,
students exhibited their work in a series of curriculum events related
to projects in humanities, math/science/technology, and the arts. As
well, ACMS developed a unique partnership with the Children's Aid
Society to provide additional academic, social-emotional, and physical
fitness resources to students.
Yet even with summer right around the corner, it is still a busy time
at ACMS. Students are working to compile and share their year-end
portfolios that highlight their growth over the past 9 months. 8th
grade students, fresh off of a weeklong trip to Washington, D.C., are
preparing to head off to high school--whether at their local high
school, a magnet program, or a private school. And presently, the
school building is getting a face-lift in the form of new windows as
part of a grant awarded to ACMS by the state department of education.
The school is looking forward to growing a bit larger next year, and
at entering into the second five years of its existence by having its
charter renewed!
If you would like to find out more about the Atlanta Charter Middle School, visit the school's website at www.atlantachartermiddle.com.
ACMS is a free public school of choice, open by lottery admissions to all
students zoned for an Atlanta Public School in grades six through
eight. Opened in the fall of 2005 by a group of area parents and
educators, ACMS is committed to student-centered and project-based
learning. ACMS is a member of the Coalition of Essential Schools and
follows the organization's principles of helping students to use their
minds well, personalized instruction, and a democratic community.

East Atlanta Security Patrol News & Information |
In the past couple of weeks, two serious crimes have occurred in East Atlanta in the vicinity of 5:00 am. The first was an armed robbery near the Flatiron as someone was dropped off at their car.
The second incident was last Monday morning, when a woman reported that she willingly accepted a ride from a stranger driving a red Grand Am at the corner of Flat Shoals and Flat Shoals Way , who then sexually assaulted her inside the vehicle. She claimed to have escaped the vehicle and hidden in some bushes on Jobeth for about ten minutes, and then went to the door of a homeowner for assistance. No coercion or weapon was reported that forced the woman to accept the ride, and no rape was reported. The woman told police that she had a fight with her Mother and was walking to her sister's when this chain of events began. If anyone is looking for more details, such as where this woman's Mother or Sister live or whether this story is completely accurate, we don't know all the facts at this time. We did not report this immediately because we were trying to gather more facts and because parts of the story still don't make a lot of sense. While there is no belief that the alleged perpetrator presents an ongoing threat to the community, it would be wise to call 911 if such a vehicle is spotted and the driving behavior suggests anything suspicious. Please be aware that there are people who prowl the streets at these hours of the morning, and even driving home late at night you need to be cautious and watch for cars that may be following you or lingering near your destination. If you feel threatened in any way, remain in your moving vehicle and call 911. Be sure to have Atlanta 911 programmed into your cell phone as 404-658-6666. For our unincorporated Dekalb residents, call 911, although you can also have the 404-658-6666 number programmed into your phone in the event you are within the Atlanta city limits when your emergency occurs. If you are aware of any ATVs that are roaming the roads of East Atlanta, please submit an e-mail to publicsafety@eaca.net. Please tell us the exact address of the owner if at all possible, as notification that they're driving down the street generally isn't helpful. We'll be working with APD to reduce or eliminate the use of these vehicles in our area, but we need your help in identifying the owners of these vehicles. As discussed at our last EACA meeting, we have had several incidents this month of phone wires being cut as a means to disable burglar alarms. If you have an alarm system that uses a landline to communicate with your monitoring company, we recommend that you upgrade to a Digital Wireless Alarm. While there is an additional monthly cost of $5-6 and a $100-200 installation cost, you can pay for this by discontinuing your landline service. There is no need to maintain a landline and a wireless backup, as the wireless service can be your primary way to communicate with your monitoring company. We also recommend that your alarm have a battery backup, which will serve you well in the event of a power failure or if a perpetrator cuts your power. Finally, May is generally a month where we experience a large number of attempted home burglaries. If you will be away for the holiday, please be sure to inform APD by completing the out of town patrol form at http://eaca.net/index/files/forms/out_of_town_patrol_request_form.pdf. If you are an East Atlanta Security Patrol member, please inform us as well. Due to the holiday, EASP is waiving the normal advance notification requirements, but please take the time to let us know you'll be out of town. Our suggestions for steps to take before leaving town are at http://patrol.eaca.net/index/faq. And always tell trusted neighbors if you'll be away, as they are truly your first line of defense against property crimes.
To learn more about the East Atlanta Security Patrol or to enroll, visit the EASP website ( http://patrol.eaca.net). The cost to join the patrol is $50 per quarter, with a 50% discount for longtime residents and those 65+. To qualify, you must have lived at the same address for 20 years or be over age 65. We also have a 20% discount for members of an APD-sanctioned Neighborhood Watch. Please contact us if you're interested in setting up a Neighborhood Watch on your street.
If you have additional questions, please direct them to securitypatrol@eaca.net, or call EACA Public Safety Chair Myron Polster at 404-429-8815. |
