Greetings! |
EACA is happy to unveil our new logo!! This week we have several upcoming events in East Atlanta including a car wash benefit for Fire Station 13 and a tribute to Fiddlin' John Carson at Sylvester Cemetery. LEAP's meeting with our School Board member Cecily Harsch-Kinnane is Wednesday night and all area parents & those interested in education are very much encouraged to attend and join the dialogue regarding education in East Atlanta. The DeKalb DA's Office launched a new website and you can find information on that below as well. The City of Atlanta also has made public their scorecards of City Services such as Public Works, Police, Fire, etc. (See "City of Atlanta Performance Measures Online" in the Local News section). We also have outlined 2 specific volunteer opportunities in the newsletter this week -- volunteering at the Origins/EACA Fire Station Car Wash at Armor Tire on Saturday and an ongoing position for EACA Public Safety Crime Mapper. See details on both below.
If you missed February's meeting, the February minutes can be found HERE. ________________________________________________

LEAP Update - APS School Board Rep Cecily Harsch-Kinnane in Attendance |
LEAP (Linking Education and the Public) will be welcoming Cecily Harsch-Kinnane, our local elected school board representative and Vice-Chair of the Atlanta Board of Education to our next meeting on Wednesday March 18th at 7:00 at the Burgess-Peterson Academy media center. The general theme of the discussion will be how to provide a public school education that meets the needs of all families in the East Atlanta community, the very reason that LEAP came into existence. Due to the changing demographics in our community, the initial target of LEAP's efforts has been on improving the quality and quantity of elementary education options in our neighborhood.
One other important topic will be on the agenda on March 18th, which is the potential merger of NCS and ACMS and its anticipated impact for East Atlanta. In the next 60 days, it is likely that an amendment to the NCS charter will be presented for a vote of the Atlanta Board of Education. We'll be discussing the ways to participate in the amendment process, as well as providing an opportunity to learn more about the merger so that you may provide your input to our elected board representatives as well as the boards of both schools.
If you can't make the next LEAP meeting or would like to participate in its efforts, please contact [email protected].

Origins Realty and EACA continue to partner in fundraising efforts directed towards raising money to furnish East Atlanta's new Fire Station 13. This weekend, neighborhood businesses Armor Tire and Park Pet Supply are sponsoring car and dog washes.
From 11:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 21st, support these efforts and get a "spring clean" by bringing your car down to Armor Tire on Glenwood Avenue. Volunteers will wash your car for $5 (vans, trucks and SUVs washed for $10).
Also, you can take your dog over to Park Pet Supply for a wash with a portion of proceeds benefitting the fire station.
If you would like to volunteer for a 2-hour shift to help us wash cars, please contact Callie Nix ([email protected]) by Wednesday.

Book ClubThursday,
March 19th - 7:00 p.m. The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield
The book club selection for March is The Thirteenth
Tale (Washington Square Press, 2007, 432 pp., pbk., reg. $15.00;
sale $12.00) by Diane Setterfield. Sometimes, when you open the door to the past, what you confront
is your destiny.
Reclusive
author Vida Winter, famous for her collection of twelve enchanting
stories, has spent the past six decades penning a series of alternate
lives for herself. Now old and ailing, she is ready to reveal the
truth about her extraordinary existence and the violent and tragic
past she has kept secret for so long. Calling on Margaret Lea, a
young biographer troubled by her own painful history, Vida disinters
the life she meant to bury for good. Margaret is mesmerized by the
author's tale of gothic strangeness -- featuring the beautiful and
willful Isabelle, the feral twins Adeline and Emmeline, a ghost,
a governess,a topiary garden and a devastating fire. Together, Margaret
and Vida confront the ghosts that have haunted them while becoming,
finally, transformed by the truth themselves.
