Hopefully
everyone has noticed the new Reactionary Records retro music shop on Flat
Shoals near the Australian Bakery. Atlanta
music vets (some might say legends) Paul Tilghmon, Brian Colantuno, and Chuck
Petrokapolous got together to offer their vintage take on the local record
shop, specializing in retro vinyl collections. Now East
Atlanta has an indie book store, record store and coffee
shop. Does that mean East
Atlanta Village
has arrived? I guess we'll see.
On another
front, the First Friday event is rapidly approaching (March 6th) and the beneficiary
this month is the East
Lake YMCA.
The East Lake Y
has a world-class facility right down Memorial Dr. and its mission is to help
build strong communities via youth development in core values. No one is
ever turned away based on financial need and currently about 1/4 of the member families
are on a scholarship type of program. It's also one heck of a nice
workout facility. runs some top notch sports leagues, and offers facilities
nationwide to its members. Read more information on the First Friday event
HERE.
One of the East
Atlanta Business Association 2009 goals is to secure signage on I-20 informing
commuters of our existence. With the help of our elected state officials,
particularly Senator Nan Orrock, we had made some progress and were feeling
pretty confident about finally getting this done. Then the DOT Board fired
the director last week so now we've got to see where that leaves us.
Happy
March everyone! I know it's cold today but those patios will soon be
packed, so get ready. Grab an organic margarita from Holy Taco
(orga-rita?) or some absinthe from the Glenwood (make sure they pour it the
right way).
