Greetings! |
At EACA's monthly meeting this Tuesday (7:00 p.m., Branan Towers), we will be hearing from several special guests including DeKalb Commissioner Larry Johnson on DeKalb's proposed 2009 budget, Principal Matt Underwood from Atlanta Charter Middle School, and Principal Robin Robbins from Burgess Peterson Academy.
After the EACA meeting, we will be heading to the Glenwood's newly opened non-smoking side to spend time together informally and get to know our neighbors. Please join us!

Thanks go to Beautification Chair Mell issa Dobraski and all 20+ volunteers who came out to beautify the Village business district and nearby streets on Sunday morning. Volunteers filled many bags of trash and recyclables, removed stickers from posts and poles throughout the village, and cleaned and tended flower beds. After all the dirty work was done, volunteers headed to La Casita for brunch. Thanks also to La Casita who opened early for EACA volunteers and gave us a discount! Next month's clean-up will be on a residential street in the neighborhood - look for details in upcoming weeks. If you would like to directly receive e-mails regarding Beautification Committee activities, please e-mail beautification@eaca.net. |

Burgess Peterson Academy Updates - Get Involved!
|
Burgess Peterson Academy has launched exciting new programs and initiatives! Some of these initiatives include:
- Launching a tutorial program for students that need one-on-one attention
- Partnering with the East Atlanta Farmer's Market to build a garden (Feb 21st) to support the school wellness plan and for hands-on experiential education
- Supporting the mandatory uniform policy by donating school uniforms in order to maintain focus on academics
- Parent workshops in order to increase parental involvement
- Incentives for fundraisers and perfect attendance such as gift cards, coupons, etc.
Not only have we begun these programs, but we also held a "Principal for a Day" this week. During Principal for a Day, one student is selected to shadow Principal Robin Robbins for the entire day. This is a very exciting day for the students selected! As stated above, we are launching a tutorial program and we are still in need of tutors. Tutors are needed Monday through Friday between 8:00 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. to come and assist students with Reading and Math in grades K through 5. If you are able to assist us in any way, please contact Azia Alexandria (Community Liaison) at 404-802-3400 or via email at aalexan8@yahoo.com.

Our DeKalb Commissioners - Litter Patrols and Food Drives
|
Commissioner Larry Johnson, in response to the growing concern that the corridors around DeKalb were inundated with litter, recommended that a special work group be developed --- the Litter Patrol. The Litter Patrol is designed to be a control measure in monitoring and maintaining the county's rights-of-way, corridors, state roads and interchanges. To read more about the litter patrol's work in the area around East Atlanta, click HERE.
Inspired by President Obama's inaugural address, Commissioner Kathie Gannon is offering a challenge to District 6 constituents to "spread the love" during February by making non-perishable food item and/or monetary donations to benefit the Atlanta Community Food Bank and Decatur Cooperative Ministries. Food collection barrels will be placed in the lobbies of the Maloof Building (1300 Commerce Drive) and 330 Ponce de Leon Ave during the month of February. Click HERE for more information.

EABA - Business Briefs
|
Marc Takacs President East Atlanta Business Association Realtor, Keller Williams Atlanta Midtown
The monthly First Friday event was this past Friday in the Village. We had 14 participating businesses but more importantly, we had one fantastic non-profit who benefited from the event. A portion of each participating business's revenue from Friday went to DREAM Rescue, a local organization dedicated education about and rescue of Daschunds. Get more info about them at www.dreamrescue.org. The final numbers aren't yet in but it looked like a few more folks found their way to EAV on Friday. EABA is looking to partner with other local non-profits as we grow this monthly customer appreciation event. This is a great way to bring various aspects of the community together while supporting worthy causes and we could all use a little good karma these days. These non-profit organizations bring people to East Atlanta who might not be aware of what we have in the Village business district. East Atlanta First Friday is an ongoing opportunity for us to promote some of the positive aspects of our neighborhood so come out March 6th and check it out. Did you know that, while the Village district is the easy part of our commercial community to find, there are very successful professional businesses in the broader neighborhood. For example, Tax Solutions, a CPA firm on Metropolitan Avenue has been a part of the neighborhood since 2001 and helps many of our local non-profits and businesses navigate the accounting world. They also handle personal taxes and have supported the East Atlanta Village for years. More info can be found at www.taxsolutionsatl.com. There are literally dozens of other attorneys, insurance agents, financial planners, realtors, marketing and graphic designers and just about any service one might need to be found right here in the East Atlanta neighborhood. Before you fire up Google, ask around or take a look at www.eastatlantavillage.net for some local professionals who support your neighborhood.

Join Holy Taco this Friday for a First Anniversary Celebration. It's the perfect excuse to try an organic margarita, a pork belly torta and the city's best churros dipped in dark chocolate sauce. The party starts on Friday, February 13th at 5 pm. www.holy-taco.com________________________________________________________________________________ Have interest in $5 dance classes (salsa, yoga, etc.), a fitness camp, or self-defense classes?
