Linking Education & the Public (LEAP) update - Get Involved!
LEAP (Linking Education and the Public) will be holding its next monthly meeting on Tuesday, February 17th from 7:00 - 8:00 pm at the Burgess-Peterson Academy media center.   LEAP is another name for EACA's Education Committee.  In addition to educating the community about our area schools and daycare options, LEAP also sponsors activities for children.  It is part of our ongoing mission to bring families together and build the relationships necessary to support the changes needed in area schools.

Our agenda for our next meeting will focus on feedback and communication between APS and the community.  We have two major efforts underway on this front, with the largest being an upcoming survey of East Atlanta parents regarding education.  We're also beginning to organize an event that will allow parents in East Atlanta to provide direct feedback to Dr. Hall and APS on the type of information APS needs to be providing to the community.  We'll have several other topics to discuss, including fundraising at Burgess-Peterson Academy, and volunteer opportunities related to LEAP's goals for the year.  Parents are welcome to bring their children to our meetings

If you wish to join the LEAP e-mail list, you can do so by clicking on the Update Profile/E-mail Address link at the very bottom of this newsletter.  If you follow the instructions, you will be given a choice to select a box for Education and Children.  If you can't make the LEAP meeting but would like to get involved or wish for us to add you to the LEAP e-mail list, drop a note to education@eaca.net.

For a consolidated view of all your local school choices, visit the EACA Schools page at http://eaca.net/index/about_east_atlanta/schools.  This is the time of the year when you need to be registering your child for the 2009-2010 school, so please contact education@eaca.net if we can be of assistance in this process.

East Atlanta Security Patrol News & Information
EASP Logo
There have been a number of burglaries or attempted burglaries recently with a focus on McPherson, Marbut/McWilliams, East Side (both north and south of Glenwood), and the Braeburn/Clifton area.

A burglary occurred Saturday afternoon on Clifton almost immediately after the residents left their home. There were 2 additional incidents this weekend in the evenings on Marbut and McWilliams with neighbors sucessfully foiling the attempt on McWilliams. It is very important to be extra vigilant right now and to watch out for, and stay in touch with, your neighbors. Call 911 if you see any suspicious activities.

The trend is still continuing where most burglaries are occurring after dark.  One other trend that seems to be accompanying the evening burglaries is at least one person stopping by to see if someone is at home and to see what you may have to steal.  One home has been approached twice in the past two weeks.  The first time a burglary was attempted later that night.  The next time their phone line was cut, possibly in preparation for another burglary attempt that night. If you have an alarm system, we strongly recommend installing a wireless backup.

To learn more about EASP or to enroll, visit the East Atlanta Security Patrol website (http://patrol.eaca.net). The cost to join the patrol is $50 per quarter, with a 50% discount for longtime residents and those 65+. To qualify, you must have lived at the same address for 20 years or be over age 65.  We also have a 20% discount for members of an APD-sanctioned Neighborhood Watch.  Please contact us if you're interested in setting up a Neighborhood Watch on your street.

If you have additional questions, please direct them to securitypatrol@eaca.net, or call EACA Public Safety Chair Myron Polster at 404-429-8815.
