New This Week
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There are some big events coming up in East Atlanta, including the East Atlanta Chili Cook-Off at the Farmer's Market this coming Thursday.  And the very popular EAV-O-Ween will take over the EAV on Friday night, creating one of East Atlanta's best family events.  See the article below for a link to the schedule of events.  The following week, be sure to come to the EAV for First Friday.  We've included a brief article about First Friday, the newest event in the East Atlanta area.
For the diehard chili enthusiasts, we've also included some information this week about the upcoming Chomp and Stomp in Cabbagetown.
We'd also like to remind everyone that this is the final week to join the East Atlanta  Security Patrol until December.  This part of the year is when crime usually increases, and we invite you to try the service for the next three months.  Patrol hours are at their highest levels around the holidays, so help make your house and street safer.  More participants mean more hours of patrols for the community!  The Security Patrol was involved in the arrest of six suspects in three different incidents last week, probably one of their more active weeks in some time.
And don't forget that advance voting begins today.  We've included all of the placs where you can vote in DeKalb County, and the large number of voting locations should reduce the long waits that have been experienced the past couple of weeks.
EACA looking for new leaders in 2009
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EACA is actively seeking new leadership for next year.  Current President Myron Polster and Vice-President Heath Turner are not eligible to return in those positions in 2009, and Sarah Palin will be in Washington or back in Alaska, so we need some new blood at the top.  This is a great chance to improve your neighborhood in areas such as Public Safety, Code Enforcement, Land Use and Zoning, Education and Transportation to name just a few.  Elections will be held at the December 9th EACA meeting for all four officer positions, including Secretary and Treasurer.

To learn more, contact one of the nominating committee members, either Henry Bryant at 404-377-6148 or Dennis Madsen at 404-577-8656.  You may also speak with one of our officers at tomorrow night's EACA meeting.

East Atlanta Chili Cook-Off
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
On Thursday, October 30th, come out and taste as East Atlanta's finest compete for the best chili in the EAV....from full-on omnivore to vegan. This event is free. Sample chili and pick your favorites for who will win the $250 prize.   The contest lasts from 4:30PM to 7PM at the East Atlanta Village Farmers Market.  Bring your own bowl and spoon and get entered into a raffle to win an EAV Farmers Market recycled organic cotton grocery bag and EAVFM t-shirt.
EAV-O-Ween is Great Fun for All
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Come to the East Atlanta Village in your best costume... kids, adults, and dogs... everyone is welcome.  EAV-O-Ween begins at 6:00 on Halloween and while the family fun ends at 9:00, the party will continue well into the night throughout the EAV.  Read the official EAV-O-Ween flyer for a list of the many activities that are a part of this scary but family-friendly event.  There is also a new schedule of events with the times and locations of all the activities.

Rick Gagnon, an East Atlanta resident who owns a local personal coaching business, is taking over the reigns for the 2008 EAV-O-WEEN Event.  Please sign up to volunteer so it can continue to be a great event for our kids and our community!  Check out the list of volunteer positions below.  If you are interested in participating, please contact Rick at 404-622-6224 or Rick@MyCoachpro.com

They Need...
- Many people to bake cookies, cup cakes, sweets and treats for the bake sale in dollar sizes or bags;
- 4 - 6 people to meet early to help pass out candy to businesses and set up tables;
- 4 - 6 people to work the bake sale table in 1 hour shifts (2 at a time);
- 6 people to paint faces in 1 hour shifts (2 at a time);
- 4 - 6 people to be at the EAV Table 1 hour shifts (2 at a time) and to help with the Costume Contest

 First Friday Celebration in the EAV
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The East Atlanta Village has recently started a new promotion called First Friday.  The idea is for participating businesses to offer various specials and enticements to secure new customers and to encourage repeat business.  Participating businesses are attempting to remain open at least an hour later, and to offer discounts, giveaways, sale items and even music and entertainment to make for a more festive atmosphere.  Look for the special logo imprinted balloon bouquet in front of your favorite EAV business!  The next First Friday will be held on November 7th.  Please speak with your favorite local merchants, bars and restaurants and ask them to participate.  And be sure to support those that do participate so that we can maintain and increase the mix of businesses in the EAV.
If you or your business would like to participate in the monthly First Friday celebration, speak with Wendy Johnson at Champagne Taste Boutique.  You can also contact her at 404-681-4456 or
wendyjohnson53@gmail.com.
Neighborhood Deputies Training
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Councilmember Natalyn Archibong would like to invite the neighborhood organizations in District 5 an opportunity to participate in the Neighborhood Deputies Program.

The City of Atlanta has re-implemented the Neighborhood Deputies Program (NDP) in the Department of Planning and Community Development to aid the Bureau of Code Compliance and Neighborhoods in addressing the minor code and zoning violations prevalent in Atlanta's communities.  This program trains volunteer residents to patrol their neighborhood, identify code violations and issue community warning notices to violators.  Some of the problems identified include:  trash, junk vehicles, illegal auto repairs, overgrowth, and abandoned houses.

The program goals are to:

Educate residents about code and zoning violations;
Involve residents in the code enforcement process;
Identify community and governmental resources to assist residents in maintaining or revitalizing their neighborhoods;
Develop leadership in implementing volunteer clean-up and fix-up programs for neighborhoods; and
Provide a NDP brochure and a NPD Code Violations Manual to assist volunteers in understanding the City of Atlanta codes and process.
The training is schedule for November 1, 2008 at 9 a.m. at City Hall, Committee Room 1.    Please fill out the application if you would like to participate.

Volunteers in
 Patrol
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The DeKalb County Police is currently taking applications for the new Volunteers In Patrol (V.I.P.) program.  This is a non-confrontational neighborhood patrol program that the DeKalb County Police is kicking off as part of the Department's Interactive Community Policing strategy.  The new program is designed to:
  • deter crime
  • improve the quality of life
  • provide a safer environment for neighborhoods
  • impact crime by having citizens patrol their own neighborhoods
  • Allow volunteers to report suspicious or criminal activity to Interactive Community Policing (ICP) or 911 (if an emergency)
To learn more, read the flyer, and if you wish to participate, fill out the application
We are excited and hope that you and your community will be as excited and eager to partner with us to ensure that all of DeKalb is a safe place to live, work and play.
September Crime Reports
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

We have posted the September crime report and year-to-date statistics for East Atlanta.  Click on the associated links to access the following:

As you read many of the detailed crime reports, you may notice that many of the victims of residential burglaries are out of town when the crimes occur.  APD offers directed patrols for any resident who will be out of town, and all that is required is faxing a form to Zone 6.  Please be sure to take advantage of this service, as your beat officers will make use of these forms as they patrol the neighborhood.

If you have any questions, or would like to get involved with the EACA Public Safety Committee, contact Public Safety Chair Ed Gilgor at publicsafety@eaca.net.

East Atlanta Security Patrol

The East Atlanta Security Patrol is an effort to provide additional police patrols for both residential and commercial properties here in East Atlanta.  Currently the Security Patrol is providing about 30 hours per week of coverage, mostly on days and times where we're experiencing the highest dates of residential burglaries.  Coverage is focused on our member households, with extra emphasis for residents who are out of town.  Time spent near any given member household is also adjusted based on current crime patterns.  Additional foot patrols are provided in the East Atlanta Village, with the number of hours dependent on the contributions of member businesses.

If you wish to join the Security Patrol, be certain that you live in the city of Atlanta, and within EACA borders.  The patrol does not currently extend to unincorporated Dekalb County since it is staffed by off-duty Atlanta police officers.

To learn more or to enroll, visit the East Atlanta Security Patrol website.   Residential burglaries have been trending down considerably in recent weeks, and that is the main focus of our patrol hours.  The next deadline for enrollment is October 31st.

If you have additional questions, please direct them to securitypatrol@eaca.net, or call EACA President Myron Polster at 404-429-8815.

Atlanta Charter Middle School (ACMS) News
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Students and families from the Atlanta Charter Middle School (ACMS) as well as former students from the Anne E. West Elementary School gathered on Sunday, October 12th at 820 Essie Avenue in Ormewood Park-the current home of ACMS and formerly Anne E. West-to celebrate the ACMS's ownership of the historic building and to open the school to residents of southeast Atlanta.  The event-presided over by City Council member Carla Smith-featured remarks from Atlanta School Board Member Brenda Muhammad, former Anne E. West student Katherine Carter, ACMS Principal Matt Underwood, and ACMS Board Chair Gigi Conner.  Attendees then had the opportunity to explore the school.
On November 7th and 8th, a team of teachers, parents, and students from ACMS will travel to Charlotte, North Carolina for the annual Coalition of Essential Schools Fall Forum.  The Coalition of Essential Schools is a national network of schools to which ACMS belongs.  The organization promotes student-centered learning and democratic decision-making.  The November ACMS PTCA meeting will feature a presentation from the team that attends the Fall Forum, and anyone who is interested in finding out more about ACMS and the Coalition of Essential Schools is invited to attend.  The meeting begins at 6:30 PM on Wednesday, November 12th in the ACMS media center.
Another upcoming community event-the Fall Fling, a joint fundraiser between ACMS and the Neighborhood Charter School-features a night of great food, fun, and an auction filled with amazing items that benefits two deserving schools. This year's Fling will be held in Glenwood Park on Saturday, November 15th from 5:30 to 10:00 PM.  For more information (including how to purchase tickets), email auction@neighborhoodcharter.com.
If you would like to read more about the school, the weekly courier is available online.  Take a few minutes to find out whether the school might be right for your child, as you can learn all about their programs and the enrollment process.  East Atlanta is in the primary attendance zone for ACMS, so be sure to keep this neighborhood school on your radar!
Burgess-Peterson Academy Volunteer Kick-Off (NEW DATE)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Burgess-Peterson Academy needs your help!  We have lots of upcoming events and need the community's assistance to support our students.  We will be holding a volunteer kick-off on Thursday, November 6th from 5-6 p.m. where interested volunteers can come to the school and learn about all of the possible volunteer needs we have at East Atlanta's only elementary school.  This is a great opportunity for the community to participate in the transformation of Burgess-Peterson Academy into a high-performing elementary school.

If you desire to get involved right away, we have numerous opportunities coming up prior to the volunteer night.  For all of the details, click on http://eaca.net/Education/Burgess-Peterson_-_Upcoming_Events.doc.

16th Street to Partially Close October 29
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
On Wednesday, October 29, the Georgia Department of Transportation will close the westbound lane of 16th Street between Spring Street and Williams Street for up to a year. This means that motorists will not be able to access I-75 northbound via 16th Street. This closure will allow GDOT to safely construct the new northbound elevated ramp to 17th Street - a major part of the ongoing 14th Street Bridge Improvement Project. Detour signs will direct motorists to 14th Street and then to Williams Street where they can access I-75 northbound. Motorists on Williams Street will still be able to travel east on 16th Street.
Work crews are making signficant progress on the $88.5 million project. The center support structure for the new 14th Street Bridge is nearing completion and the installation of the bridge beams over the southbound side of the Interstate will begin at the end of November. Crews are also working on the new southbound ramp from the Downtown Connector to 10th Street, building barrier walls and preparing Techwood Drive for its final alignment.
The 14th Street Bridge is expected to reopen December 2009 with the full project completed by spring 2010.
Marta to conduct Full Scale Police Exercise
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) in coordination with the Federal Bureau of Investigations, Georgia Bureau of Investigations, Georgia World Congress Center, Georgia Emergency Management Agency, and the Atlanta Police and Fire Departments is conducting a Full Scale Police Exercise at the Dome/GWCC/Phillips Arena/CNN Rail Station on Sunday and Monday, November 2 - 3, 2008, from 10:00 PM to 4:00 AM.  These training exercises provide the opportunity for MARTA police, staff and emergency responders to practice response and recovery operations during a simulated emergency situation.

Beginning 8:00 PM Sunday, November 2, 2008, the Dome/GWCC/Phillips Arena/CNN Rail Station will close and rail service will be suspended between Five Points and Vine City stations.  Buses are scheduled to transport customers between these stations from 8:00 PM Sunday to 12:30 AM Monday.  Passengers should board route 216 at MARTA's Five Points station at the intersection of Alabama and Forsyth Street.

A community advisory will be provided to the residents of potentially impacted communities, organizations, churches, schools, and businesses.  Please share the attached flyer regarding service changes with your constituents.

The following Vine City bus routes will be affected:

Route 52 - Knights Park will terminate at Ashby Station Route 11 - West End Station and Route 51 - Simpson Street will board at Five Points on Forsyth at Alabama going south at Route 113, 97, and 55 bus stops. Route 11 - English Avenue will board at Broad Street and Alabama at Route 9 and 21 bus stops.
MARTA will resume regular rail service on Monday morning.  We will make every effort to help our customers reach their destinations in a timely manner.  We are also asking for patience should customers experience a longer than normal wait.

Thank you for your support for MARTA and public transit.

Sincerely,

"How Do
I Contact EACA?
"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
One of our most frequently asked questions is how to contact an EACA officer or committee chair.  The answer is quite simple.  Visit our contact page and find the name of the person or committee that you wish to contact.  You may also travel directly to our contact page by clicking on the Contact link from anywhere on the EACA website.  If you aren't sure who the correct person or committee to contact is, feel free to direct your inquiry to the EACA president.
Once you arrive at the contact page, you can either fill in the online form, or you can click on a person's name if you'd rather send a message from your own e-mail program.  The advantage of sending a message from your own e-mail is that you can keep a record of what you sent, when you sent it and to whom it was directed.
"What are some of the reasons I would contact EACA?"
  • You have a problem that you think we may be able to help resolve, such as an issue with safety on your street;
  • You have an idea on how to improve the neighborhood;
  • You would like to volunteer to help with an event like a cleanup of the Village;
  • You would like to join an EACA committee;
  • You have a topic you'd like to present at an EACA Meeting.
The East Atlanta Community Association is here to serve you!
