New This Week
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Tomorrow we will be holding the monthly meeting of the East Atlanta Community Association at 7:00 p.m. at Branan Towers.  We'll be discussing a new dog park for the area, providing an update on the proposed new development on Moreland Avenue south of Glenwood, and discussing other development and public safety issues.  We'll have more details tomorrow when we send out the agenda.
Some updates have been announced regarding events coming up this month.
Read below for more details on two big community meetings this week, as well as EAV-O-Ween and the East Atlanta Chili Cook-Off at the end of the month.
There will be a Community Town Hall Meeting for residents of DeKalb County District 3  Thursday evening at 6:30 at Drew Charter School, which encompasses the areas served by DeKalb County Commissioner Larry Johnson and Atlanta City Councilwoman Natalyn Archibong.  The focus of the meeting is Public Safety and Quality of Life issues.  This is a great opportunity to voice your comments to our public officials, and hopefully to discuss issues in more depth than we usually have time for at our monthly EACA meetings.  View the official announcement for more details.
There is also a city of Atlanta Public Safety meeting scheduled for Saturday, October 18th, which will also be at Drew Charter School.  The event begins at 8:30 am with breakfast, and lasts from 9:00 - noon.  It will be focused solely on Public Safety issues for residents of the city of Atlanta living in DeKalb County, and will include breakout sessions on topics such as juvenile justice and how residents can work with APD.   Be sure to read the official meeting flyer for the full list of topics.
One final reminder that the tax day for city of Atlanta residents is upon us, with the deadline for payment of property taxes being this Wednesday, October 15th.
EACA looking for new leaders in 2009
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EACA is actively seeking new leadership for next year.  Current President Myron Polster and Vice-President Heath Turner are not eligible to return in those positions in 2009, and Sarah Palin will be in Washington or back in Alaska, so we need some new blood at the top.  This is a great chance to improve your neighborhood in areas such as Public Safety, Code Enforcement, Land Use and Zoning, Education and Transportation to name just a few.  Elections will be held at the December 9th EACA meeting for all four officer positions, including Secretary and Treasurer.

To learn more, contact one of the nominating committee members, either Henry Bryant at 404-377-6148 or Dennis Madsen at 404-577-8656.  You may also speak with one of our officers at tomorrow night's EACA meeting.

EAV-O-Ween is Great Fun for All
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Come to the East Atlanta Village in your best costume... kids, adults, and dogs... everyone is welcome.  EAV-O-Ween begins at 6:00 on Halloween and while the family fun ends at 9:00, the party will continue well into the night throughout the EAV.  Read the official EAV-O-Ween flyer for a list of the many activities that are a part of this scary but family-friendly event.
Rick Gagnon, an East Atlanta resident who owns a local personal coaching business, is taking over the reigns for the 2008 EAV-O-WEEN Event.  Please sign up to volunteer so it can continue to be a great event for our kids and our community!  Check out the list of volunteer positions below.  If you are interested in participating, please contact Rick at 404-622-6224 or Rick@MyCoachpro.com
They Need...
- Many people to bake cookies, cup cakes, sweets and treats for the bake sale in dollar sizes or bags;
- 4 - 6 people to meet early to help pass out candy to businesses and set up tables;
- 4 - 6 people to work the bake sale table in 1 hour shifts (2 at a time);
- 6 people to paint faces in 1 hour shifts (2 at a time);
Local Flavor Dominates Annual Best of Atlanta List
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The Annual Creative Loafing Best Of Atlanta List has been published and the Porch Press coverage area had an amazingly strong showing, taking 34 of the 300 some awards. The polling is admittedly unscientific but the trend that more and more metro citizens are recognizing the great amenities, restaurants, shops and events that we have is a truly great sign. Several even won multiple awards. Apparently, being south of I-20 no longer carries the same negative connotation we've been saddled with for years.

Neighborhood Deputies Training
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Councilmember Natalyn Archibong would like to invite the neighborhood organizations in District 5 an opportunity to participate in the Neighborhood Deputies Program.
The City of Atlanta has re-implemented the Neighborhood Deputies Program (NDP) in the Department of Planning and Community Development to aid the Bureau of Code Compliance and Neighborhoods in addressing the minor code and zoning violations prevalent in Atlanta's communities.  This program trains volunteer residents to patrol their neighborhood, identify code violations and issue community warning notices to violators.  Some of the problems identified include:  trash, junk vehicles, illegal auto repairs, overgrowth, and abandoned houses.
The program goals are to:
Educate residents about code and zoning violations;
Involve residents in the code enforcement process;
Identify community and governmental resources to assist residents in maintaining or revitalizing their neighborhoods;
Develop leadership in implementing volunteer clean-up and fix-up programs for neighborhoods; and
Provide a NDP brochure and a NPD Code Violations Manual to assist volunteers in understanding the City of Atlanta codes and process.
The training is schedule for November 1, 2008 at 9 a.m. at City Hall, Committee Room 1.    Please fill out the application if you would like to participate.
August Crime Reports
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

We have posted the August crime report and year-to-date statistics for East Atlanta.  Click on the associated links to access the following:

As you read many of the detailed crime reports, you may notice that many of the victims of residential burglaries are out of town when the crimes occur.  APD offers directed patrols for any resident who will be out of town, and all that is required is faxing a form to Zone 6.  Please be sure to take advantage of this service, as your beat officers will make use of these forms as they patrol the neighborhood.

If you have any questions, or would like to get involved with the EACA Public Safety Committee, contact Public Safety Chair Ed Gilgor at publicsafety@eaca.net.

East Atlanta Security Patrol

The East Atlanta Security Patrol is an effort to provide additional police patrols for both residential and commercial properties here in East Atlanta.  Currently the Security Patrol is providing about 30 hours per week of coverage, mostly on days and times where we're experiencing the highest dates of residential burglaries.  Coverage is focused on our member households, with extra emphasis for residents who are out of town.  Time spent near any given member household is also adjusted based on current crime patterns.  Additional foot patrols are provided in the East Atlanta Village, with the number of hours dependent on the contributions of member businesses.

If you wish to join the Security Patrol, be certain that you live in the city of Atlanta, and within EACA borders.  The patrol does not currently extend to unincorporated Dekalb County since it is staffed by off-duty Atlanta police officers.

To learn more or to enroll, visit the East Atlanta Security Patrol website.   Residential burglaries have been trending down considerably in recent weeks, and that is the main focus of our patrol hours.  The next deadline for enrollment is October 31st.

If you have additional questions, please direct them to securitypatrol@eaca.net, or call EACA President Myron Polster at 404-429-8815.

Burgess-Peterson Academy Volunteer Kick-Off
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Burgess-Peterson Academy needs your help!  We have lots of upcoming events and need the community's assistance to support our students.  We will be holding a volunteer kick-off on Thursday October 30th from 5-6 p.m. where interested volunteers can come to the school and learn about all of the possible volunteer needs we have at East Atlanta's only elementary school.  This is a great opportunity for the community to participate in the transformation of Burgess-Peterson Academy into a high-performing elementary school.
If you desire to get involved right away, we have numerous opportunities coming up prior to the volunteer night.  For all of the details, click on http://eaca.net/Education/Burgess-Peterson_-_Upcoming_Events.doc.
Interested In An Off-Leash Dog Park Near EAV?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

For the past couple of years, a group has been working to build an off-leash dog park in DeKalb Memorial Park, which is located exactly a mile from EAV, next to the intersection of Glenwood Avenue and Wilkinson Drive.  Thanks to the efforts of DeKalb County Commissioners Gannon and Johnson, Southeast Capital Partners, in connection with their construction of a mixed-use development on the site of the Parkview Plaza Shopping Center on Memorial Drive, has agreed to donate funds to the DeKalb County Parks Department for improvements to DeKalb Memorial, including the creation of an off-leash dog park.

In order to show support for the off-leash dog park in our neighborhood, EACA has been asked to write a letter supporting the creation of a dog park.  If you have any additional questions about the dog park, please e-mail Scott Wandstrat at swandstrat@gmail.com.  Mr. Wandstrat will also be making a presentation about the dog park at EACA's next meeting on Tuesday, October 14 at 7:00 p.m.

"How Do
I Contact EACA?
"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
One of our most frequently asked questions is how to contact an EACA officer or committee chair.  The answer is quite simple.  Visit our contact page and find the name of the person or committee that you wish to contact.  You may also travel directly to our contact page by clicking on the Contact link from anywhere on the EACA website.  If you aren't sure who the correct person or committee to contact is, feel free to direct your inquiry to the EACA president.
Once you arrive at the contact page, you can either fill in the online form, or you can click on a person's name if you'd rather send a message from your own e-mail program.  The advantage of sending a message from your own e-mail is that you can keep a record of what you sent, when you sent it and to whom it was directed.
"What are some of the reasons I would contact EACA?"
  • You have a problem that you think we may be able to help resolve, such as an issue with safety on your street;
  • You have an idea on how to improve the neighborhood;
  • You would like to volunteer to help with an event like a cleanup of the Village;
  • You would like to join an EACA committee;
  • You have a topic you'd like to present at an EACA Meeting.
The East Atlanta Community Association is here to serve you!
