New This Week

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Lots of news and events have been added this week.  Of course that means that our newsletter is getting a bit large with everything happening in the month of October.  For that reason, we're beginning a transition where articles will run for a shorter duration, but we'll be archiving the newsletter on our website.  The archive is up now, and we've started with the month of September.  We encourage you to continue receiving the newsletter by e-mail each week, but you'll also see new issues in the archive on our website a day after they're sent out.  The archive also contains a link where new readers can sign up to receive the newsletter, so be sure to tell your friends and neighbors to add their name to our e-mail list.
Just announced is a Community Town Hall Meeting for residents of DeKalb County District 3 and city of Atlanta District 5, which encompasses the areas served by DeKalb County Commissioner Larry Johnson and Atlanta City Councilwoman Natalyn Archibong.  The focus of the meeting is Public Safety and Quality of Life issues.  This is a great opportunity to voice your comments to our public officials, and hopefully to discuss issues in more depth than we usually have time for at our monthly EACA meetings.  The event will be held on Thursday, October 16th at 6:30 p.m. at Drew Charter School, which is located near the Publix on Glenwood in East Lake.  View the official announcement for more details.
There is also a city of Atlanta Public Safety meeting scheduled for Saturday, October 18th, although we haven't received the exact time or location.  An invitation is forthcoming from Councilwoman Archibong.  This will be more in the format of breakout sessions on topics of interest to residents in the city of Atlanta, such as juvenile justice and code enforcement.  We are still trying to understand the exact nature of this meeting, and which public officials are expected at this meeting as opposed to the Town Hall Meeting described above.  We will have more details in next week's newsletter and at the October 14th EACA meeting.
We haven't been running this information lately, but in our Crime Report section we've included a link to a form that city of Atlanta residents living in Zone 6 should complete before going out of town.  Be sure to read the article and bookmark the page or print out the form for future use.
United Way of Metro Atlanta is holding its final Community Forum next week right here in DeKalb County.  The input from our comments will help shape their five-year strategic plan.
Learn more in our Local Events section.
This coming Saturday is the date for the Open House at the Atlanta Charter Middle School that was discussed at our last EACA meeting.  This is a great chance to see the makeover of the building that the school now owns as well as meet teachers, parents of current students, and the school's leadership team.  The school is just across Moreland in Ormewood Park.  Get all the details below in the School News section, or you can read the flyer that describes the event.
Just a reminder that a couple of key deadlines are approaching.  Voter registration ends today, as we've indicated in our Election Day article.  And the dreaded tax day for city of Atlanta residents is approaching, with the deadline for payment of property taxes being October 15th.
EAV-O-Ween Seeks Volunteers
They Need...
- 4 - 6 people to meet early to help pass out candy to businesses and set up tables;
- 4 - 6 people to work the bake sale table in 1 hour shifts (2 at a time);
The Annual Creative Loafing Best Of Atlanta List has been published and the Porch Press coverage area had an amazingly strong showing, taking 34 of the 300 some awards. Neighborhood Deputies Training
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Councilmember Natalyn Archibong would like to invite the neighborhood organizations in District 5 an opportunity to participate in the Neighborhood Deputies Program.

The City of Atlanta has re-implemented the Neighborhood Deputies Program (NDP) in the Department of Planning and Community Development to aid the Bureau of Code Compliance and Neighborhoods in addressing the minor code and zoning violations prevalent in Atlanta's communities.  This program trains volunteer residents to patrol their neighborhood, identify code violations and issue community warning notices to violators.  Some of the problems identified include:  trash, junk vehicles, illegal auto repairs, overgrowth, and abandoned houses.

The program goals are to:

Educate residents about code and zoning violations;
Involve residents in the code enforcement process;
Identify community and governmental resources to assist residents in maintaining or revitalizing their neighborhoods;
Develop leadership in implementing volunteer clean-up and fix-up programs for neighborhoods; and
Provide a NDP brochure and a NPD Code Violations Manual to assist volunteers in understanding the City of Atlanta codes and process.
The training is schedule for November 1, 2008 at 9 a.m. at City Hall, Committee Room 1.    Please fill out the application if you would like to participate.

August Crime Reports

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We have posted the August crime report and year-to-date statistics for East Atlanta.  Click on the associated links to access the following:
As you read many of the detailed crime reports, you may notice that many of the victims of residential burglaries are out of town when the crimes occur.  APD offers directed patrols for any resident who will be out of town, and all that is required is faxing a form to Zone 6.  Please be sure to take advantage of this service, as your beat officers will make use of these forms as they patrol the neighborhood.
If you have any questions, or would like to get involved with the EACA Public Safety Committee, contact Public Safety Chair Ed Gilgor at [email protected].
East Atlanta Security Patrol
The East Atlanta Security Patrol is an effort to provide additional police patrols for both residential and commercial properties here in East Atlanta.  Currently the Security Patrol is providing about 30 hours per week of coverage, mostly on days and times where we're experiencing the highest dates of residential burglaries.  Coverage is focused on our member households, with extra emphasis for residents who are out of town.  Time spent near any given member household is also adjusted based on current crime patterns.  Additional foot patrols are provided in the East Atlanta Village, with the number of hours dependent on the contributions of member businesses.
If you wish to join the Security Patrol, be certain that you live in the city of Atlanta, and within EACA borders.  The patrol does not currently extend to unincorporated Dekalb County since it is staffed by off-duty Atlanta police officers.
To learn more or to enroll, visit the East Atlanta Security Patrol website.   Residential burglaries have been trending down considerably in recent weeks, and that is the main focus of our patrol hours.  The next deadline for enrollment is October 31st.
If you have additional questions, please direct them to [email protected], or call EACA President Myron Polster at 404-429-8815.
Burgess-Peterson Academy Volunteer Kick-Off
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Burgess-Peterson Academy needs your help!  We have lots of upcoming events and need the community's assistance to support our students.  We will be holding a volunteer kick-off on Thursday October 30th from 5-6 p.m. where interested volunteers can come to the school and learn about all of the possible volunteer needs we have at East Atlanta's only elementary school.  This is a great opportunity for the community to participate in the transformation of Burgess-Peterson Academy into a high-performing elementary school.

If you desire to get involved right away, we have numerous opportunities coming up prior to the volunteer night.  For all of the details, click on http://eaca.net/Education/Burgess-Peterson_-_Upcoming_Events.doc.

Atlanta Charter Middle School - Open House
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Nearly a year after purchasing its own building and after several months of
time, sweat, and energy from volunteers helped to give the school a whole
new look and feel, the Atlanta Charter Middle School is hosting an
Open House and Building Celebration on Sunday, October 12th from 2:00 to 4:00 PM.
The event is open to all who are interested in taking a peek inside ACMS and
getting to know the people who have helped the school achieve success for
students over the past three years.  Students, staff, parents, and community
members will speak about their experiences with the school, and those in
attendance will be invited to explore the school inside and out.  If you've
wondered what it's like inside ACMS, October 12th provides a perfect
opportunity to come and see for yourself!  ACMS is located at 820 Essie
Avenue in Ormewood Park.
The Atlanta Charter Middle School is a free public school of choice, open by
lottery admissions to all students zoned for an Atlanta Public School in
grades six through eight.  The school's primary attendance zone is NPU-W.
Opened in the fall of 2005 by a group of area parents and educators, ACMS is
committed to student-centered and project-based learning.  ACMS is a member
of the Coalition of Essential Schools (www.essentialschools.org) and follows
the organization's principles of helping students to use their minds well,
personalized instruction, and a democratic community.  Please visit our
website (www.atlantachartermiddle.com) for more information about the
school.
My Coke Rewards program begins at Burgess-Peterson Academy
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Burgess-Peterson Academy has partnered with Coke to start a My Coke Rewards program at the school.  Simply enter the codes from participating Coca-Cola products on behalf of Burgess-Peterson and you'll be helping our local elementary school purchase items to benefit East Atlanta children.

You can read the general program overview at http://eaca.net/Education/MCR_School_Brochure.pdf, and you can see exactly how to enter your codes at http://eaca.net/Education/MCR_Presentation1.ppt

If you simply wish to collect the bottle tops that contain the codes, just bring them to an EACA or LEAP meeting and a school representative will enter them on behalf of Burgess-Peterson Academy.

Interested In An Off-Leash Dog Park Near EAV?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
For the past couple of years, a group has been working to build an off-leash dog park in DeKalb Memorial Park, which is located exactly a mile from EAV, next to the intersection of Glenwood Avenue and Wilkinson Drive.  Thanks to the efforts of DeKalb County Commissioners Gannon and Johnson, Southeast Capital Partners, in connection with their construction of a mixed-use development on the site of the Parkview Plaza Shopping Center on Memorial Drive, has agreed to donate funds to the DeKalb County Parks Department for improvements to DeKalb Memorial, including the creation of an off-leash dog park.
In order to show support for the off-leash dog park in our neighborhood, EACA has been asked to write a letter supporting the creation of a dog park.  If you have any additional questions about the dog park, please e-mail Scott Wandstrat at [email protected].  Mr. Wandstrat will also be making a presentation about the dog park at EACA's next meeting on Tuesday, October 14 at 7:00 p.m.
"How Do
I Contact EACA?
"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

One of our most frequently asked questions is how to contact an EACA officer or committee chair.  The answer is quite simple.  Visit our contact page and find the name of the person or committee that you wish to contact.  You may also travel directly to our contact page by clicking on the Contact link from anywhere on the EACA website.  If you aren't sure who the correct person or committee to contact is, feel free to direct your inquiry to the EACA president.

Once you arrive at the contact page, you can either fill in the online form, or you can click on a person's name if you'd rather send a message from your own e-mail program.  The advantage of sending a message from your own e-mail is that you can keep a record of what you sent, when you sent it and to whom it was directed.

"What are some of the reasons I would contact EACA?"

  • You have a problem that you think we may be able to help resolve, such as an issue with safety on your street;
  • You have an idea on how to improve the neighborhood;
  • You would like to volunteer to help with an event like a cleanup of the Village;
  • You would like to join an EACA committee;
  • You have a topic you'd like to present at an EACA Meeting.
The East Atlanta Community Association is here to serve you!
