Every 6 months, I take a helicopter view of my business to see what has changed on the horizon. Then I update my goals to match the paths to get where I want to go.
Have you done that lately? If you have, you know that the field of view in
"blue sky" thinking is a lot different from being in the trenches. You can see obstacles and options from up there that you miss from the ground. If you have ever taken a bird's eye, you know it's worth the trip.

I literally got to see fields from the air this month. And I got to do something that had been on my wish list for years. Not only that, it cost me a fraction of what it would have, had I not been a believer in
setting goals and taking action when an opportunity shows up.I had just finished updating my flight path when I read three simple questions in one of my favorite e-zines:
- What are you trying to make happen?
- How will you measure success?
- What's the first thing you need to do to get started?
The instructions were
"to answer each question using no more than 12 words per answer. This means the email you send me cannot exceed 36 total words, plus your name and contact information. Yes, there will be prizes. The biggest prizes will be the ones received by every participant: clarity of thought and purpose. There will be other prizes sent by my office."Before you read on, stop and write down your answers.Since I was thinking about these questions anyway, I decided to answer.
- Teach artists how to build a better living from their art.
- Artists connect art with relationships that lead to referrals and sales.
- Build relationships with artists who want to build referrals and sales.
Then I went back to writing and talking about art marketing and working with fine artists. And I forgot about the contest.
Two weeks later, the e-zine announced the
307 winners (out of 43,000 readers). My name was on the list! The prize was a lifetime "
Honorary Acadgrad" membership so I could register for classes at half price.
To pay it forward, I am offering a prize to every artist who answers the 3 questions in 36 words and sends them to Aletta@ArtistCareerTraining.com by September 21st. I guarantee it will be worth it and you will be an exceptional artist taking action to making a better living making art. Think big. Set goals. Take consistent action over time. You will get where you want to go.
