How to Ride Out the Tough Economy

CarImageAre you sick of hearing about how the tough economy will get tougher before it gets better.  And now the weather promises more stormy days. There is only so much bad news anyone can take! Don't let that stop you from soaking up three more ways to keep your motor running. You have to stay in the race to win.

The next time you wonder why you are working twice as hard to get the same results, remember this timeless wisdom: "Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity." Seneca.

Car CartoonTo strike when the iron is hot, you need Smooth Ride Shock Absorber #3: Be Ready at a Moment's Notice.

Art representative, lecturer and author, Margaret Danielak is the daughter of artists and a graduate of the University of California at Berkeley. She produces innovative art-related events in alternative venues. Margaret was a Producer Fellow at The American Film Institute and is the author of the highly-rated handbook for fine artists, "A Gallery Without Walls".

Margaret works smart to generate healthy sales for the artists she represents. Just how do you do this?

Here are three ways to find your opportunities in any business slowdown.

Have your art and your marketing ready to go.
Make sure you have an adequate inventory of art ready to show at a moment's notice. Create simple art marketing habits you will actually repeat. Always having your business card with you is one of the simplest. Keep your web site up to date, so people know that you are still alive and kicking.

Research future events and possible venues.
Always be on the look out for places to show your work. Make it a game to take the bite out of the daily news. Seek out the most promising festivals, buyers, trends, and competitions for your subject matter. Look for any event, trend, or venue that could hold an opportunity for you.

Learn from others.
Be willing and able to participate in developing your own success. Learn more about art sales and art collecting now when you can make the time.  Apprentice yourself to a master artist; work with a buddy; take classes on-line and join arts organizations.

Margaret Danielak ImageMargaret's last word on handling the tough economy:  Get busy and take charge! This is something you can do at ANY AGE!

Indeed! Read this, if you have any doubts.

"I enjoy reading your articles all the time.  The 'Over 40, Not Over the Hill' article hit a nerve.  I am 62 years old and I work full time for the government.  Also, I am a graduate student in the Master of Arts program at the University of Saint Francis here in Fort Wayne, Indiana.  I received my Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Florida, Gainesville, Florida, in 1986 at the age of 41.  The government and all industries seem to want their employees over 40 to leave so they can hire people right out of college for less pay and less experience.  The age mentality seems to be strongly tied with the fashion and movie industries stressing youth.  Americans seem to throw away older people.  Georgia O'Keefe kept creating into her 90's as well as many artists.  I could not afford $660 a credit hour so now I get a senior discount of $209 a credit hour to go to school.  I plan to teach when I graduate and continue creating art.  Don't you just want to slap someone silly when they refer to age?  We have to ignore them and never give up." ~

P.S. Mature artists who have been able to support themselves continuously have adapted to the many changes in the way art is shown and sold. If you want to add more strategies for sales, join A.C.T. Art Business Mentor, Margaret Danielak for a lively discussion in "It's Not Your Mother's Art World: Sales Strategies for the Mature Artist".
