United Way's $100,000 Small Business Challenge

Heart of West Michigan United Way is inviting small businesses to take on the Small Business Challenge. The Steelcase Foundation has created a matching grant specifically for small businesses, and it matches dollar-for-dollar United Way donations of $1000 or more from companies with 100 or less employees.

The Challenge stretches small business donation dollars and becomes part of one of West Michigan's largest community efforts. Corporate gifts, employee workplace campaigns or special event proceeds - all gifts $1000 and above will be matched.

If you or someone you know owns a small business, please contact United Way's Specialized Market Manager, Linda Kiander, at lkiander@hwmuw.org or 616.752.8630 to learn more.

AmeriCorps VISTA Profile: Maegan Pulley

Maegan PulleyThe Volunteer Center is thrilled to welcome Maegan Pulley to our ranks!  Maegan is a recent graduate from Davenport University with a degree in Business Management and a passion for civic engagement.

While at Davenport, Maegan worked in their on-campus volunteer center and was deeply impacted by her role as leader for a group of volunteers on a week-long Alternative Spring Break trip.

"Participating in the Alternative Break movement increased my desire to remain an active citizen and engage others in the community," Maegan shared.

With her experience and passion for volunteerism, Maegan is a natural fit for the Volunteer Center.  In just a few short weeks, she has already proven herself a very valuable asset to our team!

What is VISTA?

AmeriCorps VISTA is a federal national service program founded in 1965 to fight poverty.  Short for Volunteers in Service to America, VISTA members commit to working 40 hours a week for one year, tackling projects such as illiteracy, healthcare, and other community issues.  The Volunteer Center has benefited from the service of three VISTAS: Kristian Grant, Teresa Zbiciak and now, Maegan.

Happy Thanksgiving ... and Thanks!

Your commitment to our community is truly making an impact and helping Heart of West Michigan United Way change lives.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

The 2012 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., National Day of Service on January 16th is fast approaching!  You can post or find MLK Day volunteer opportunities on Volunteer Solutions*.  It's an excellent day for team building projects, advocacy, and reflecting on the important role every citizen has in our community.

* Agencies, to share opps created specifically for MLK Day,  please use "MLK Day 2012" in the title to aid in searching.

Congrats Teresa!

Please help us congratulate our former AmeriCorps VISTA worker Teresa Zbiciak on her new position as the Volunteer Center Program Coordinator.  Teresa will be our main contact for corporate volunteerism and will continue to work on our skills-based volunteering initiative.
