RnG Logo The LEAGUE Book Drive Helps SOH

Sibley Book Distribution

Crowe Horwath LLP and The LEAGUE Michigan are once again partnering for the month of March to promote National Reading Month through the Read n' Give program. The Read n' Give program was started in 2008 by Crowe Horwath LLP, one of the largest public accounting and consulting firms in the United States. The mission of Read n' Give is to collect, share, read, donate and pass on books in a continuous cycle of giving.  The actual collection will begin in March and boxes will be available in Schools of Hope schools.  We are asking our tutors to mention the book drive and encourage their tutees to contribute if possible.  If tutors themselves have gently used children's books, they may be dropped off at the school in March.

This is an important project for Schools of Hope because the books that are donated are sorted and then distributed to Schools of Hope students in late spring so that they will have summer reading materials.  Last year over 15,000 books were collected.  Our AmeriCorps members sort the books during spring break week and begin the process of packing bags for the students.  Excess books and books not suitable for elementary students were offered to local non-profit agencies for their clients.

Inclement Weather Reminder

Snow FlakeJust a reminder; check the media in the morning.  If a school is closed for a heat or mechanical problem, staff may not report and may be unable to contact tutors.  Whether it is your school or all GRPS schools that are closed, we do not expect tutors to make up their sessions.

Remember that we never expect tutors to come if they feel the conditions are unsafe for travel.  If that is the case, we do ask that you try to contact the school to report your absence.

Schools of Hope on the Morning Show

Schools of Hope runs two programs besides our in-school tutoring. We operate a highly successful after school program for children who need intensive help in reading.  The program is led by Renee Borg with the assistance of Lori Owens.

Welcome Rosanne Holton

We welcome Rosanne Holton as part of our Schools of Hope Team.  She will be taking some of the duties that had been performed by Renee Goodemoot.  Roseanne's primary responsibility for the in-school program will be maintaining the database and answering tutor inquires.  She brings an extensive background in education and business to her position and we are very glad to have her.

First Lunch n' Learn - Thanks to Nikki Banks

Thanks to Nilkki Banks, Associate Professor of Criminal Justice at Grand Rapids Community College, for speaking at our first Lunch n' Learn.  Nikki spoke about her experiences with juveniles in the justice system and how tutors can help children avoid entry into the system.  Here a brief statement from Nikki about the importance of tutors by clicking here.

Five GRPD Officers to Become Tutors

GRPD Patch

Thanks to Chief Kevin Belk and past Deputy Chief James Farris for promoting Schools of Hope within the Grand Rapids Police Department.  As a result, 5 officers are in the process of becoming tutors.  This is a great opportunity for our children to get to know our officers as individuals who are concerned about their welfare, success and safety.

Meet Rita Guydon- Mulick Coordinator

R Guydon

Rita Guydon is one of six new Schools of Hope coordinators this year.

I am new to the School of Hope program but not to the Grand Rapids Public Schools.  I have been employed by Grand Rapids Public Schools for 16 years.  Prior to being employed I volunteered for 15 years.  I enjoy working with kids.  I am excited to see what I can accomplish with our students here at Mulick Park this year.  I also have two daughters and three granddaughters.

Meet Sherri McGinnis  - AmeriCorps Member

 Rita Guydon

AmeriCorps member, Sheri McGinnis, has a keen desire to help her community in a time of need. Sheri says, "I joined AmeriCorps because serving local in Michigan's current economic climate is especially important. We need to stay true to our state and invest in our next generation. We need to equip them with skills for their future, teach them to be the best they can be no matter what stage of life they're at, and lead by example."

Serving at Mulick Park and Campus Elementary, Sheri enjoys helping the students, sharing their successes, and seeing their confidence and enthusiasm grow as they become empowered through reading. After her service ends, Sheri plans on continuing to work with youth in the community.  She will be going to grad school to finish her Masters of Social Work and pursuing a career as a therapist specializing in adolescent treatment.

Celebrating 10 Year Tutors

We are in the process of developing a list of tutors who have been with the program since its inception in school year 2001 - 2002.  We have posted a list of active tutors who meet this criteria here. If you believe you belong, please review the list and email Fritz with any questions you might have.

Tell Your Story

Our tutors are our best recruiters. If you have a story to share, please email it to us or contact Fritz Crabb.

Program Needs

From time time to time, program needs arise that can not be met through UW or school funds.  We will list them here for your consideration.

Dickinson School needs a portable playpen for children whose parents are in the SOH Family Literacy Program.  If you can help meet this need call Colleen McGrath at 819-4900.
