Be positive!
Praise goes a long way with learners who struggle in reading. Provide positive feedback when correct responses are made and don't correct every little mistake that does not detract from the meaning of the sentence. For example don't correct "a" when it should be "an." |

| Your Important Work |
Researchers at the University of Chicago found evidence that students who were at and above grade level in third grade graduated from high school and attend college at higher rates than their peers who were below grade level. Although the study cannot make the claim that third-grade reading ability determines the likelihood of high school graduation and college attendance, it does suggest that supporting struggling readers as early as possible in their educational careers will help substantially to bolster their success in school. |

We now have the ability to manage our web site. Consequently, we try to change lead articles at least monthly. We also want to remind tutors that all our newsletters from this school year are archived on the site. Click here to visit the site. |
Need a Group Presentation?
Schools of Hope staff will provide programs about literacy and Schools of Hope to church groups, service clubs, etc. We can tailor these to most any length from 10 minutes on up. We have no expectation of getting tutors from these presentations although we often do. |
| Brain Based Education Workshop |
This free two-hour session will cover brain-based education, neuroplasticity and why reading is not a natural act for the brain. Reading problems can occur when there is a miscommunication or misfire in the brain. Incorporating a multisensory approach into any learning environment helps ensure success for students. We will share ideas and inexpensive materials to use in your classroom or at home!
