Tutors Needed

The Grand Rapids Public Schools has identified over 450 students who need reading tutors from Schools of Hope.  If each child receives the maximum of 3 sessions per week, we would need over 1,300 tutors.  Our current database lists 773 active tutors.  If you know of others who are willing to help a child receive this vital skill, please have them visit our web site or have them call Renee at 752-8618 for further information.

Remember that we have two schools that are new this year, Burton and Dickinson elementary schools, both on the south side of town.  We would really appreciate new tutors who could select one of those schools.

Longevity

We know you are out there, those tutors who have stuck with us for the length of the program starting in the Fall of 2001.  We are working to identify our 10 year tutors by reviewing old tutor lists and working with our building coordinators.  You can help by self-identifying.  If you know you have been with us since the program inception, please email Fritz Crabb.

Coordinator Corner

Ashley Reinhart
Each month we will introduce another coordinator in the newsletter.  We are proud to work with such an outstanding group of individuals who are adept at managing the needs of students and tutors.

This month we welcome Ashley Reinhart, Schools of Hope coordinator for Burton Elementary. Currently pursuing a teaching degree, Ashley is new to GRPS and looking forward to working in the school system. From Dansville, MI, Ashley says she is eager to be a part of a successful program that helps students, and is excited to create and develop the new program at Burton Elementary.

AmeriCorps Corner

Megan MurphyWe sincerely appreciate the AmeriCorps members serving in our schools.  Each month we will strive to introduce one of them.

This month we are proud to introduce Megan Murphy serving at G.R. Montessori and Dickinson Elementary.  Megan says her love for reading inspired her to join the Schools of Hope team, and adds that she joined AmeriCorps in order to do her part to help kids in the community. While Megan is originally from the Upper Peninsula, she is no stranger to the Grand Rapids community, where she earned a Master's degree in Public and Non-Profit Administration from Western and worked at the Public Museum for several years. After serving her year in AmeriCorps, Megan has ambitions to join the Peace Corps where she hopes to continue to serve children.

Tutoring Tips

Be positive!

Praise goes a long way with learners who struggle in reading. Provide positive feedback when correct responses are made and don't correct every little mistake that does not detract from the meaning of the sentence.  For example don't correct "a" when it should be "an."

Thank You!!
The following companies have sponsored training sessions or informational meetings for Schools of Hope this year: Miller Johnson, Keystone Church, Wolverine Worldwide, Steelcase, GE Aviation, Meijers, Mercantile Bank, Cole's Quality Foods, GRCC students, GVSU English 308, GVSU staff, and Aquinas students. In addition, many of our past partners have sent new recruits to our public trainings.
Your Important Work

Researchers at the University of Chicago found evidence that students who were at and above grade level in third grade graduated from high school and attend college at higher rates than their peers who were below grade level. Although the study cannot make the claim that third-grade reading ability determines the likelihood of high school graduation and college attendance, it does suggest that supporting struggling readers as early as possible in their educational careers will help substantially to bolster their success in school.

Did You Know?

Our Schools of Hope After School program will be featured on the Morning Show with Shelly Irwin on Friday, November 12 at 10:30 AM. Nancy Carter and Angelia Coleman from Campus Elementary will be the guests.  The Morning Show can be found on WGVU 88.5 FM.

We now have the ability to manage our web site.  Consequently, we try to change lead articles at least monthly.  We also want to remind tutors that all our newsletters from this school year are archived on the site. Click here to visit the site.

Need a Group Presentation?

Schools of Hope staff will provide programs about literacy and Schools of Hope to church groups, service clubs, etc. We can tailor these to most any length from 10 minutes on up.  We have no expectation of getting tutors from these presentations although we often do.

Brain Based Education Workshop

This free two-hour session will cover brain-based education, neuroplasticity and why reading is not a natural act for the brain. Reading problems can occur when there is a miscommunication or misfire in the brain.  Incorporating a multisensory approach into any learning environment helps ensure success for students.   We will share ideas and inexpensive materials to use in your classroom or at home!
