Media Q & As
This month's Media Q & A is based on the question I get asked the most in media training sessions: "How do I know what questions the reporter will ask me?" What do I do if they ask me something I don't know or would rather not say?"
The answer is that there are two ways to help yourself before the interview. First, if the reporter is calling you for a story they are working on and that is not related to a media release you just sent them, ask them these questions BEFORE agreeing to an interview:
- What is the story about?
- Who else will you be interviewing?
- How much of my time do you need?
- Where will the interview be held?
- And, if it's to be a radio or tv interview, will it be live or taped?
Once you know the answer to these questions you can decide if the interview will be beneficial to your organization and your members, donors or volunteers. If you decide the interview is a good idea and you have the time, agree to the interview. Then, the second thing to do to help yourself is prepare your key messages on the story topic. Don't focus on the reporter's questions. Focus on determining what are the three most important things you could say on the topic of their story. If during the interview the reporter asks you a question that you don't know the answer to, that's perfectly okay. Just say you don't know and, if they wish you could find it out for them after the interview, and move to one of your already prepared key message points on the topic. On the other hand, if you do know the answer to the reporter's question and you would rather not say, DO NOT say I don't know. Instead, bridge from their question to one of your key messages. That's the tricky part and the part that I help participants build skills to handle during my media training workshops. There's one coming up in a couple of weeks. Read more about the " Pitch Your Story to the Media Workshop" in St Albert on May 16, 2012 from 1:30 to 3:30pm. Limited to four participants. On camera sessions. There are two seats left.
