Greetings

Wild Geese

You do not have to be good.
You do not have to walk on your knees
For a hundred miles through the desert, repenting.
You only have to let the soft animal of your body
love what it loves.

Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine.
Meanwhile the world goes on.
Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain
are moving across the landscapes,
over the prairies and the deep trees,
the mountains and the rivers.
Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air,

are heading home again.
Whoever you are, no matter how lonely,
the world offers itself to your imagination,
calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting --
over and over announcing your place
in the family of things.

~ Mary Oliver ~

As many of you know, I find incredible inspiration in the poems of Mary Oliver.  Her words circle and weave like a dance of mindfulness. Wild Geese seemed especially appropriate to share this month, as we enter into the season of fall bounties and also a season of reflection.  Do you ever look up and see geese flying, each an individual but also an integral part of a larger community? Can the geese teach us the ever changing balance between me and we?  During this month of October, I hope you find some time and space to reflect upon what you love and announce your place in the family of the world.

Wishing you a mindful month,

Pam

a mindful nation

I am looking forward to attending: A Mindful Nation with Congressman Tim Ryan (D-Ohio) on Monday November 26 at 7 PM in Newton, MA.  In these days of political acrimony and polarization, I am encouraged by the message of cooperation and conscious action that are espoused in A Mindful Nation.

Tickets are $10 and books will be available for purchase and signing. Advance tickets are recommended due to space constraints. To register, call 617-559-6999 or register online

To watch Congressman Tim Ryan discuss his book, here is a YouTube clip.

If there is sufficient interest, I will consider putting together a meet-up after the lecture, A Mindful Nation, for those would like to discuss the topic.  Email me if you might be interested and I will post details of where to meet in the November newsletter.

Hope in Health Care: Exploring the Wonder and Awe in Health Care

EKG heartCompassion fatigue is a term that describes the effect on caregivers when they have continually provided care for others but neglected their own nurturing and renewal.  Symptoms include disengagement with others, lack of empathy, isolation, exhaustion, feeling of hopelessness, decreased productivity, stress, irritability and anxiety.

Compassion fatigue is exceedingly common but does not need to be inevitable in the health care professions. To prevent it one must take proactive measures by prioritizing and incorporating self care strategies into one's professional and personal life.  Periodically attending a short retreat is one way to give yourself a booster shot of hope and caring and fend off compassion fatigue.  This is why I was thrilled to learn of a retreat coming up in November to address the unique stressors of health care professionals and allow them to gather together to renew and reinvigorate their caregiving for self and others.

Some great compassionate health care leaders will be facilitating the weekend retreat to be held from Friday evening November 2 until Sunday morning November 4 in upstate New York at Peace Village.  I plan on attending!
