September 2012
Greetings

Adversity often activates a strength we did not know we had.
~ Joan Walsh Anglund

Today is September 11.  For those of us who experienced the horror and disbelief eleven years ago, it is a day that will live in infamy, as December 7 did for our parents' generation. So what do we do with these dates that conjure up so mu
candlech grief? How do we remember the past and still move forward? I am struck by the powerful tales of resilience among the families of those who lost their lives on 9/11 -- acts of giving back through days of service, the healing power of connecting to others, creating a sense of community, and instilling hope. As our parents' generation was shaped by the events of December 7, 1941; so too will we continue to be shaped by September 11, 2001.  It is our choice how we will allow this infamous date to influence us into the future -- will we choose isolation, distrust and hate or will we choose to give back through connection, community and healing?

How will you choose to be shaped by September 11?

Wishing you a mindful month,

Pam

A Mindful Nation

a mindful nation Congressman Tim Ryan's new book, A Mindful Nation, speaks to the importance of teaching skills of mindfulness to all ages. Both an inspiring and pragmatic approach that may lead to a less-stressed, more connected, and (dare I say) a more hopeful nation.

For those of you in the greater Boston area, Representative Ryan will be speaking in Newton, MA at Newton North High School on Monday, November 26 at 7 PM.  Tickets are $10 and books will be available for purchase and signing. Advance tickets are recommended due to space constraints. To register, call 617-559-6999 or online through Newton Community Education.

To watch Congressman Tim Ryan discuss his book, here is a YouTube clip.

Newton Community Education is also offering a Fall Mindfulness Lecture Series on Tuesdays in October.  For more information or to register for the series, contact Newton Community Education.
