Greetings!
"Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?"
~Mary Oliver (from her poem, The Summer Day)
June opens us to possibilities...a season of commencements, a time of beginnings, a month of celebratory milestones; weddings, graduations, retirements. June heralds a sense of stepping into unknown territory, shifting from our school-year selves into our summer selves. Whether or not you are celebrating a traditional life milestone this month, with a graduation, wedding, or retirement, why not also celebrate your own "commencement"? Remember that commencement means to begin not end...so, tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?
Wishing you a month of commencements,

The Journey Continues | |
As some of you know, I have been working (for several years!) on a graduate degree in Pain Research, Education and Policy from Tufts University School of Medicine. Thank you all for your support and encouragement over the years!
I am happy to report that on May 22, I had the honor of receiving my degree and delivering the commencement address for my program. If you are interested in reading my commencement address, I have included it here. I am also pleased to announce that I have recently been appointed as an adjunct faculty member in the Tufts University School of Medicine's Pain Research, Education and Policy Program. I look forward to combining my continuing work with mindfulness, MBSR, and consulting with research in the field of integrative pain management. |

MBSR Camp Scheduled for
Aug 29-Sept 1 | |

Send yourself to camp this summer!
4-day MBSR (Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction) Camp for adults. The MBSR Camp will be held in Concord, MA and includes training in MBSR tools and techniques over the course of 4 consecutive half-days (9 AM -12 noon) for a total of 12 hours of group instruction and meditation practice.
The MBSR Camp is experiential in nature and will include both indoor and outdoor meditation training, as well as a field trip to a New England labyrinth. MBSR Camp is particularly suited to teachers and educators interested in incorporating mindfulness into their classrooms, but also open to anyone who is interested in MBSR training. If you are not local to the area, this would be a beautiful time of the year to visit New England, work with me, and enjoy local sightseeing in the afternoons (a list of local accomodations would be provided).
The MBSR Camp will be offered the last week of August (Mon-Thurs, Aug. 29-Sept 1). Cost will be $300 per person. Minimum enrollment is necessary for the program to be held.
Secure online registration is now open by clicking here. If you prefer to register by mail, please email me for registration info. |
New Application Helps Bring Awareness to Your Screen Time |
|
As you have read in my previous newsletters, research is now suggesting that meditation and mindfulness have a positive effect on the brain. Research has also shown that multitasking and intense computer screen time can decrease our ability to be mindful, healthy and copec effectively with stress.
How do you "re-mind" yourself that it is time to step away from the computer screen at regular intervals? How can you coexist successfully with the digital demands of the present world? I have had the pleasure of testing a new application for Macs and Windows computers called Awareness. What I love about this application is that it is neither annoying nor intrusive (as I have found some other timers); instead it uses the gentle sound of a Tibetan singing bowl to alert you that you have been at the computer for an hour. When you hear the singing bowl, a suggestion for taking a mindful break appears on your computer screen -- great idea!
This application was developed by David Siegel and Michael Highland, the two founders of Futureproof. I hope this is the just the first of many innovative tools from Futureproof to help us use technology effectively and productively, while also keeping ourselves mindful and aware.
