February 2011
Greetings!

Resilience: the ability to recover, to be flexible, to bounce back

SnowAs many of us slog through what has been an unrelenting winter filled with blizzards, ice dams, and snow drifts the size of small mountains, it is tempting to mindlessly maneuver through our days wishing it was spring.  It is, however, extremely challenging to actually acknowledge the present moment when there is discomfort because we desperately want it to be different...yet this is the essence of building resilience...strengthening the ability to bounce back, regroup, and renew in the face of adversity. This month, I have highlighted some ways to help you enhance and embrace resilience by: increasing your brain, cultivating mindfulness, and finding a sense of control in the controllable.

Wishing you a month of inner warmth and resilience,

Pam

Brain Gain Through Mindfulness

Brain ScanWow...more articles appeared this month on the benefit of cultivating mindfulness for increasing brain function and structure.  Who knew that mindfulness would be such a dominant topic in the mass media?  I have highlighted a particularly interesting article in the Boston Globe which includes some simple, effective mindfulness exercises.

Have you recently seen any articles on mindfulness that might be of interest to others? Please send them my way (pressler@stressresources.com) and I will be happy to include links to the articles in my blog.

How Can You NOT Laugh at a Time Like This?

How Can You NOT Laugh at a Time Like ThisHow Can You NOT Laugh at a Time Like This? This is the intriguing title of a book that came across my desk this month.  What intrigued me more than the title was the subtitle: Reclaim Your Health with Humor, Creativity and Grit.  Wow...now we are talking my language...RESILIENCE

This treasure of a book was written by Carla Ulbrich, also known as The Singing Patient, a young woman who rides the waves of multiple chronic illnesses by use of humor, tenaciousness, and the recognition that "health" is more than the absence of disease.

How Can You NOT Laugh at a Time Like This? is a book of short essays, filled with wisdom gained by navigating the frustrating and often dehumanizing healthcare system, words of courage and irreverence, and tips for keeping your sanity and humor amid pain and disappointment.  Three cheers for Carla Ulbrich for telling it like it is from the patient perspective...this book should have a place in every medical waiting room.

"Meditation helps us defuse stress, experience greater tranquility, find a sense of wholeness, strengthen our relationships, and face our fears."

~Sharon Salzberg, Real Happiness

Real Happiness

I recently had the pleasure of reviewing Sharon Salzberg's

new book Real Happiness: The Power of Meditation.  I opened the book and couldn't put it down!

What Sharon has so skillfully crafted for the novice and experienced meditator is a simple and concise resource for integrating meditation into one's life in a guided format. The book includes a guided meditation CD and addresses frequently asked questions on meditation. I encourage you to put this on your must read list for 2011.
