June 2010

Greetings!

basketball"In basketball, as in life, true joy comes from being fully present in each and every moment, not just when things are going your way." Phil Jackson

OK, I admit it I will be watching the NBA finals this month, rooting for our beloved Boston Celtics against arch rivals, the Los Angeles Lakers.  Let me be clear, I am hoping for a Celtics victory, but I am fascinated by the L.A. Laker's coach Phil Jackson and will be watching as he motivates his players.  You may or may not know that Phil Jackson is a long-time mindfulness meditation practitioner. When he was the coach of the Chicago Bulls, he trained his team in aspects of mindfulness meditation that helped create a higher level of team playing, as well as a higher level of performance.  In his book, Sacred Hoops: Spiritual Lessons of a Hardwood Warrior, Phil Jackson writes, "In basketball-as in life-true joy comes from being fully present in each and every moment, not just when things are going your way. Of course, it's no accident that things are more likely to go your way when you stop worrying about whether you're going to win or lose and focus your attention on what's happening right this moment"  A great lesson that we can all apply whether it is being present with our kids, facilitating a meeting, or dealing with the stresses of daily living.

Wishing you a month of mindfulness (and GO Celts),
Pam

Healing and Therapeutic Gardens
flowersIf you are interested in learning about and exploring the therapeutic aspects of healing gardens, you may be interested in a certificate course my colleague landscape architect, Lisa Bailey will be teaching this summer at the Boston Architectural Center entitled: Healing and Therapeutic Gardens

Here is a bit about the course: "Gardens designed for healing, relaxation, contemplation and connection to nature are appearing at a range of healthcare facilities, senior living and Alzheimer facilities, sanctuaries, churches and retreats, in addition to residential yards and public parks. Time honored healing traditions have valued healing gardens and more recent research supports the wisdom of incorporating healing and therapeutic gardens into many kinds of projects."

Annual Walden Pond Mindfulness Workshop Information

What a wild spring we have had in Massachusetts! Walden PondDue to the
unusual flooding this Spring, we are still up in the air about the date for the annual Walden Pond Mindfulness workshop.  I will be posting updates to the flooding situation at Walden Pond in the July/August newsletters.  At this point most trails that we have used in the past are not yet passable. As the trails begin to dry out and Walden Pond reopens, we will schedule our annual Mindfulness Workshop.
