Lilacs
Greetings!

"Be like a flower and turn your face to the sun."
-
  Kahlil Gibran

Was it ever really winter?  Spring has rushed in to sweep away any remnants of winter. The lilacs are in bloom and the grass is a beautiful shade of emerald...how quickly we forget the ice and snow!  It is one of the reasons I love living in New England...the impermanence of the seasons lends to a sense of mindfulness of the changes.  As with life, when things are going particularly smoothly or are especially difficult, we assume and perceive their permanence and continued existence in perpetuity. Letting go of the expectation of permanence allows you to experience the moment mindfully...and perhaps to "be like a flower and turn your face to the sun".

Wishing you a month of mindfulness,
Pam

National Nurses' Week

nursesNational Nurses' Week is observed each year from May 6-12.  Did you know that for the last decade a Gallup poll on honesty and ethics in jobs has consistently found the profession of nursing to be ranked highest of all professions by 83% of Americans surveyed?  While the image of a nurse in a starched white uniform and cap ministering to a patient at their bedside may be what many imagine as the role of a nurse, they are mistaken!  Nursing's role has expanded exponentially over the last decades, with many nurses earning advanced degrees, becoming leading researchers and experts in their areas of practice, running hospitals and health-related business ventures. Nurses will need to be instrumental in healthcare reform if we want to create a model of prevention and wellness care  instead of maintaining a model of illness treatment in our country. On the global front, nurses have the training and expertise to be catalysts and advocates for change.  Let's begin to recognize nurses for the wisdom and skills they bring to the healthcare table.  Congratulations and gratitude to all the nurses who are making a difference...Happy Nurses' Week.
