November 2009
Riding at dusk
Greetings!

"The thinnest yellow light of November is more warming and exhilarating than any wine they tell of.
The mite which November contributes becomes equal in value to the bounty of July."
-   Henry David Thoreau

Perhaps Thoreau is on to something...our tendency to cherish what is in short supply.  As the days grow shorter, the sunlight is celebrated in a way that we take for granted in the long days of summer. Maybe we do need this change of seasons, and waning light, to bring us a new awareness of what we still have. May you find many gifts in the month of November.

Take care,
Pam

You will find a supportive and welcoming respite in the midst of your busyness.

Mindful Health and the Power of Possibility

Ellen Langer

"Ellen Langer offers us brilliant insights into subtleties that hold us back in life, and shows the way to shining new possibilities. Counterclockwise will change the way you see and think."
- Daniel Goleman, Ph.D., author Emotional Intelligence

"Counterclockwise makes a strong case for the influence of expectation and belief on how our bodies function, on how we heal, and even how we age. Ellen Langer presents fascinating scientific data to support this view and argues convincingly that we should learn to take greater control of our health through the practice of mindfulness. Her research is innovative and empowering."
- Andrew Weil, M.D

I was lucky enough to hear Harvard University professor, Dr. Ellen Langer discuss her new book, Counterclockwise: Mindful Health and the Power of Possibility, this week.  Her theories on mindfulness, health and aging are grounded in the premise of the mind/body connection. I was particularly intrigued by one of her strategies which she calls, the Reverse Zeno Strategy.  Dr. Langer has taken the Zeno Paradox, which states: "If you always cover half the distance between where you are and where you want to be, you are never going to get there" and reversed it by stating: "There is always a step small enough from where you are to get you to where you want to be".

Fascinating lecture, and excellent new book...I highly recommend it.

Rethink, Resolve, Renew

group of womenFor the past five years, I have set aside time to attend the Massachusetts Conference for Women each December.  Why do I keep going?  Because each year I leave with new ideas, and a burst of creativity and inspiration fostered by excellent keynotes, and engaging workshops.  Two of this year's keynote speakers are Ruth Simmons, president of Brown University and Suze Orman, personal finance author, TV personality and columnist.

The conference, held at Boston's Convention Center, attracts over 4500 women each year.  The date of this year's conference is Thursday, December 10.

New Audio Series Available

All of us are in the "healthcare biz" these days...either as a provider or consumer (or both). Many of us agree that our current healthcare system needs improvement. You may have heard about the Cambridge, Massachusetts based organization, Institute for Healthcare Improvement.  Dr. Donald Berwick and colleagues at the Institute for Healthcare Improvement are committed to collaborating, cultivating and changing healthcare systems and delivery of healthcare.

I have been very impressed with the Institute for Healthcare Improvement's new audio series, WIHI, on their website. All programming is free of charge and can either be listened to live or downloaded as a podcast for future listening.  A recent WIHI program I found interesting was entitled: The Future of Nursing, with guests, Donna Shalala, former U.S. secretary of Health and Human Services, and Sue Hassmiller, Director of the RWJF, Institute of Medicine.
