May 2008
Greetings!

Be the change
... I hope you will find time to explore some of the opportunities for reflection and change I have highlighted below; from supporting your meditation practice; to becoming a change agent in global health; growing your compassion with Sharon Salzberg; or reflecting about your relationship with time by listening to Randy Pausch. The ability to be the change and make a difference is within each of us...I wish you a month of exploration and change.

Take care,
Pam

Celebrate Nurses and Global Health in May

We must create public opinion which must  drive the government instead of the government  having to drive us -- an enlightened public opinion,  wise in principles, wise in details." -- Florence Nightingale

In celebration of National Nurses Week, May 6-12, let's all consider how we can be change agents in promoting global health care.  The Nightingale Initiative for Global Health has been established by nurse leaders and health advocates from around the country and around the world to collaborate on making our planet a healthier place for all. Whether or not you are a nurse, consider joining me in signing on to the Nightingale Declaration to let your voice be heard by the United Nations to support initiatives that will work toward increasing global health by 2020. Yes, your one signature can make a difference.

Randy PauschRandy Pausch Lectures on Time Management

Many of you contacted me after reading about Dr. Randy Pausch in one of my previous newsletters.  You were blown away by his wisdom, courage, and incredible spirit...the most frequent comment I received was simply....WOW!!!  Since that time, Randy's celebrity has grown albeit for a reason none of us would want...how to live with terminal pancreatic cancer with grace and humor. Google's top video this week is Randy Pausch's Time Management Lecture which he gave a few months ago at the University of Virginia.  It is filled with wit, wisdom and mindfulness...as well as great suggestions on time management.  The Last Lecture, the book based on Randy Pausch's lecture: Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams presented at Carnegie Mellon University, is now available and has become an immediate bestseller.

To learn more about Randy and his amazing journey click here to read his blog. Randy still has much to teach us and I, for one, am taking lots of notes!

The Three Characteristics of Life

Workshop with Sharon Salzberg on June 14
meditation
Cambridge Insight Meditation Center will be hosting a fundraising workshop on Saturday, June 14 with Sharon Salzberg.  You may be familiar with Sharon's numerous writings and CDs.  Sharon Salzberg has been leading meditation retreats worldwide since 1974. She teaches both insight meditation and lovingkindness and compassion meditation. Sharon's books include The Force of Kindness, Faith: Trusting Your Own Deepest Experience; Lovingkindness: The Revolutionary Art of Happiness and A Heart as Wide as the World. She co-authored with Joseph Goldstein Insight Meditation, a Step-by-Step Course on How to Meditate (audio). I am sure this will be a wonderful day of learning and sharing with one of the world's most engaging meditation teachers.
