Greetings!
February is a month where we pay attention to "heart matters", both our blood pumping mechanism and our metaphorical heart. In this month's newsletter I have included items highlighting the physical heart, as well as the hearts of compassion, busyness and change. Perhaps you want to spend some time with self care, strengthening your "heart of compassion" or you want to learn some new tools of work-life balance to help your pounding "heart of busyness" to slow down a bit. Or maybe it is time to allow your "heart of change" to guide you in a new direction. Give yourself a Valentine this year, by taking some time to think about the many manifestations of "heart" and how you can keep them all as healthy and balanced as possible.
Wishing you peace, love, and compassion,

Join others in Stopping, Taking a Breath, Observing and Proceeding in the middle of the day. The daytime meditation maintenance group meets monthly on Fridays from 12:30-2:30 PM at my Concord office located at 97 Lowell Rd.
The format of these sessions will be the same as the evening sessions, with the intent to deepen your meditation practice and discuss your insights and challenges in a friendly, small group setting. Stress and the Heart |
|
What can you do?
New research has been focused on stress and how it may influence heart disease in both men and women. While there are no conclusive data indicating stress as a primary risk factor in heart disease, there are many findings correlating high levels of perceived stress with known primary risk factors for heart disease in both sexes.
Women have not been as thoroughly studied as men in regard to heart disease, and gender differences are becoming apparent. For instance, women seem to be at a significantly greater risk for a condition called Stress Cardiomyopathy, also called Broken Heart Syndrome, which is thought to be precipitated by a massive surge in the stress hormones following a traumatic event. Click here to learn more about Broken Heart Syndrome.
It is key for both men and women to become more aware of the risk factors, as well as ways to mitigate these risk factors as best we can. While we do not have control over our genetics, we can control many lifestyle factors and actively work to make some small changes, such as increasing stress resiliency, diet and exercise to give ourselves the best possible outcome we can. I have been very impressed with the American Heart Association's Go Red for Women campaign in educating women, especially young women, to be "heart healthy".
