Greetings!

It seems that no matter how old we are, September still is a month filled with anticipation of a fresh start, a new school year, a time to sharpen our metaphorical pencils and begin anew.  When we turn the page of the calendar the month of September beckons us with unlimited possibilities!  To celebrate lifelong learning, this month's newsletter is dedicated to the perpetual student within each of us.  May we all continue to discover, explore and stretch our minds each day.

Keep sharpening those pencils,

Fall MBSRFall Session Begins Soon

A wonderful way to stretch your mind and explore new strategies for working with stress is by joining one of the 8-week Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Programs (MBSR) offered by Stress Resources. The fall session will be starting the week of September 17.

Classes meet once a week for 2 hours.  Monday evening and Friday morning sessions are available.

As an added bonus, Stress Resources is pleased to offer continuing education credit for nurses, social workers, health care professionals and teachers who complete the program.

Quieting the Mind in the Classroom
StudentWhat Are We Teaching?

While articles about the hurried, overscheduled, overachieving child are nothing new, self-reporting of extreme amounts of stress by young students is both surprising and troubling. One only needs to open any of the glossy city magazines to come face to face with how we, as adults, subtly endorse the stress filled academic environment. The cover story of the September issue of Boston Magazine is entitled "Junior Achievers" (highlighting the "best" preschools in the city and how to get your child admitted). What are we teaching our children?  A few schools across the country are taking notice of this trend and addressing it with innovative, holistic approaches.  A recent NY Times article, "In the Classroom: A New Focus on Quieting the Mind", highlighted the use of mindfulness in the classroom. I encourage you to consider how we can take an active role in addressing our children's stress.

BuddhaStefano Arienti: The Asian Shore

Expand your knowledge of the relationship between art and meditation and discover or rediscover a hidden gem in Boston.

If you have never been to the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, you don't know what you are missing!  Tucked into a busy urban area of Boston, an easy walk from the Longwood Medical Area and Harvard Medical School, is an incredible Venetian palazzo.

Currently at the Gardner, through October 14, is a fascinating contemplative Asian-influenced exhibition by contemporary artist Stefano Arienti.  The artist and environment combine to invite the viewer to become part of the contemplative experience by encouraging sitting meditation on rugs in the exhibit space.

What a refreshing and rejuvenating way to spend a lunch hour or an afternoon!
