Greetings!

June....the beginning of the summer, the end of school, and a time to think about "vacations". Merriam-Webster's first definition of the word VACATION is as follows: va-ca-tion:noun: a respite or a time of respite from something.

Research indicates that to be effective leaders, students, parents and human beings, we need to find time to renew and replenish ourselves. Finding time to "vacation", perhaps in our own backyard or halfway around the world is necessary to recover from the stresses of our overcommitted, overscheduled lives. In this month's newsletter, I have included a link to some tips for a more mindful, less stressful vacation.

For those of you in the Boston area in August, I will again be offering an early evening Mindfulness Workshop at Walden Pond; an opportunity to discover mindfulness and renewal in nature. Check out the description of the workshop below.

Summer is also a great time to schedule a session or two with me to help strategize ways of reducing burn-out and increasing tools of self-care. I am available to meet on Friday afternoons in my Concord office by appointment. To schedule an appointment either e-mail me or call the office at: 978-369-5243.

As always, I enjoy hearing your comments and suggestions for topics of interest for future newsletters, workshops and classes.

Wishing you a wonderful "vacation",
Pam

Tips for a "Less-Stress" Vacation

1. Lower the bar on vacation expectations. With shorter and shorter vacations we all want to each minute to be perfect. Allow yourself to let go of the unobtainable expectations.
2. Leave the electronics at home or at least turned off. We are connected 24/7 to an unnaturally fastpaced lifestyle. Reconnect by disconnecting for a few days.
3. Spend 20-30 minutes each day by yourself. While vacations are typically spent with friends and family, pay attention to renewing your own inner resources by making time for introspection each day.
4. Keep the schedule of activities flexible. Throw away the overscheduled calendar for a few days.
5. Acknowledge what is out of your control and what you can control. You cannot control the weather, but you can control how you deal with the consequences – perhaps using a rainy day to play a board game you haven’t played in years, or discover a local spot that you wouldn’t have explored in sunny weather.

Mindfulness at Walden

For a wonderful opportunity to experience mindfulness in nature at Walden Pond in Concord, join me for an interactive workshop entitled Mindfulness at Walden on Wednesday, August 2 from 6-8 PM (raindate will be August 3) We will explore mindfulness through walking meditation, listening meditation, journaling, as well as sitting meditation following Henry David Thoreau's path to his cabin site and using some of Thoreau's quotes as springboards for our own meditations.

Fee for the workshop is $30 (parking available at Walden Pond for $5) Preregistration is necessary prior to July 28. Wear comfortable walking shoes, and bring a towel or blanket to sit on. (Bug repellent is strongly recommended) Materials will be provided.
