Greetings!

Welcome to the September edition of News from Stress Resources.

As we continue to be stunned by the destruction of Hurricane Katrina, I am also struck by the incredible resilience of so many in the face of catastrophe. Again and again I have been reminded that our inner resources are so important, as the external events in our lives are so unpredictable and impermanent.

September is a natural time to reassess our skills and look to new learning opportunites. The Fall 2005 session for the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Program is now underway. As a reminder, if you are a nurse or healthcare professional, continuing education credit is available for the program.

Last month, I was honored to be a participant in one of the regional lead-in events to the 2005 White House Conference on Aging. This will be the first Conference on Aging to address the unique aspects of aging baby boomers. Check out the links included in this newsletter to find out more information.

Many of you have requested quick tips for bringing mindfulness into the workplace. I recently authored an article entitled, “Caring for the Caregivers: Stress-LESS Tips for the Workplace”, published in Creating the Future through Renewal,by the Honor Society for Nursing: Sigma Theta Tau International. While the article was written for nurses, it is very applicable to other workplace environments.

As always, I encourage and appreciate your comments and suggestions for future programming and newsletter topics. May you continue to strengthen and nourish your inner resources.

Take Care,

Pam

2005 White House Conference on Aging
Booming Dynamics of Aging

The White House Conference on Aging occurs every decade with the express purpose of developing national policy on aging. As 78 million baby boomers come of age as seniors over the next decades, how will we define and articulate the needs of this generation? This is the challenge and opportunity we have before us!

I was honored to be a panelist for a regional event leading in to the December 2005 Conference on Aging. I see a need to address the unique challenges of baby boomers as caregivers to children and parents, as well as creating a new model of health and "successful aging" versus "anti-aging" in our society.

For more information about this important event, as well as making your voice heard on this topic, click onto the government website for the 2005 White House Conference on Aging. I have added the article which appeared in the Concord Journal regarding the regional lead-in forum to the Stress Resources website on the In the News page.

Stress-LESS Tips for the Workplace

We could all use a few more tools for our toolbox of stress management skills. In a recent article I wrote for Create the Future Through Renewal, a publication of the Honor Society of Nursing: Sigma Theta Tau International, I discussed ways in which we can integrate tools of mindfulness and stress reduction into our everyday lives. The article is linked below.

While the article was written for nurses, I believe it is applicable to many other professions. I would love to hear your comments and ideas for other Stress- LESS Tips that work for you. With your permission, I will share them (without names!) in a future newsletter.
