Greetings!

Welcome to the April edition of News from Stress Resources.

Happy Stress Awareness Month! Did you know that there is an "official" month for stress? Most of us would agree that stress does not follow a calendar, but April has been declared "Stress Awareness Month". While I don't think we need to worry about it becoming a "Hallmark Holiday", perhaps it can serve a purpose in reminding us to be more aware of our stressors and stress-coping tools during April. I encourage you to give yourself permission during this "Stress Awareness Month" of April to practice mindfulness and self-care.

Spring is a time of renewal and rebirth. What better time than NOW to take some time to renew, rebalance and restore yourself with a class or workshop just for you. The next series of my 8-week program in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) will be starting the week of April 25. This class is open to new students, as well as former students who need an intensive refresher. Also during April there are a number of interesting workshops being offered at Kripalu, in Lenox, Massachusetts. If you haven't been to the Berkshires in the springtime you are in for a treat -- breathtaking beauty and no crowds. If you are planning ahead, I have highlighted some upcoming retreats for Nurses by Nurses on beautiful Cape Cod at the Barnaby Inn.

For those of you coming out of hibernation, I do want to call your attention to our monthly Drop- In Refresher Meditation Class which meets this month on Thursday, April 14,from 7-9 PM.

As always, I welcome your suggestions, comments and feedback on this newsletter. Please feel free to forward it on to friends or associates who may be interested.

Take Care,

Pam

Spring Stress Reduction Program

The Spring session of the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction program will beginning the week of April 25. The course will be offered both Tuesday evenings as well as Friday mornings at the Wright Tavern Center in Concord, MA.

The program consists of 8 weekly two hour group classes modeled after the internationally recognized program in stress reduction at the UMass Medical School founded by Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn. Participants in the program practice relaxation techniques, guided mindfulness meditation, gentle yoga stretches, and self-inquiry exercises. Upon completion of the program participants commonly report a reduction of stress related symptoms, increased awareness and concentration, and an improvement in positive coping skills at home and in the workplace.

I am pleased to be able to offer 19.2 contact hours of continuing education for nurses and other healthcare professionals who complete the Stress Reduction Program. Stress Resources is proud to offer the only Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction program in Massachusetts awarding continuing education approved by the Massachusetts Association for Registered Nurses.

To register for the upcoming Spring Session of the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction program, call Stress Resources at 978-369-5243 or register through Wright Tavern Center (at First Parish Church in Concord) at 978-369-9602. The cost for the program is $150 tuition and $50 materials, including text and audiotapes.

Spring at Kripalu

Many of my students know that I am a firm believer in retreats for extra doses of self-care. While I advocate practicing self-care on a daily basis through tools of meditation and relaxation, a retreat away from the everyday is a great way to jump start a meditative practice.

We are particularly lucky in New England to have a myriad of choices for retreats. Some retreats centers have day-long programs, while others are more geared for a long weekend or week-long centering experience. I will be highlighting many of these programs and centers over the next several months to give you a taste of what is available not too far from your doorstep.

The Kripalu Center for Yoga & Health, located in Lenox, Massachusetts, is a gem of a retreat and renewal facility. Kripalu offers many workshops and programs, as well as longer training sessions taught by the world's leading experts in yoga, meditation, self-care and healing. Some highlights of their Spring calendar include, a workshop for golfers on using yoga and meditation to improve your swing and shave a few points off your score care. Also, Dr. Alice Domar, an expert on self- care for women will be presenting a workshop in April. Just a few suggestions to get you thinking about taking care of YOU this spring. I would love to hear about your special retreat spots, too!
