Greetings!

Welcome to the February edition of News from Stress Resources.

As we experience winter in its full glory this month, I invite you to take some time for yourself and your overall wellness. Check out my book review of Jon Kabat-Zinn's recently published book on mindfulness, Coming to Our Senses, a great read for a winter weekend.

Since February is "Heart Month", I have included some information on a recent study by the British medical journal, Lancet, on heart disease, as well as a new clinical trial called "Healing the Heart" that is now enrolling participants.

Winter is also a great time to schedule workshops or programs for your company or group. Participants are very receptive and eager to learn self care strategies, especially when it is cold and snowy outside. Remember that Stress Resources offers custom-designed workshops to meet the needs of any business or group and better yet, workshops can be presented on-site--no need for participants to struggle with the winter weather to attend!

As always, I welcome your suggestions, comments and feedback on this newsletter. Please feel free to forward it on to friends or associates who may be interested.

Warmly,

Pam

New Book by Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn

As many of you know, I had the priviledge of training at the UMass Medical School's program on Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction founded by Jon Kabat-Zinn. Dr. Kabat-Zinn's program has become the "gold-standard" for most stress reduction clinics and programs at major medical centers worldwide.

Recently published by Hyperion, Coming to Our Senses: Healing Ourselves and the World Through Mindfulness, is a welcome addition to the field of mindfulness, health, and healthcare. In his first new book in several years, Jon examines mindfulness through the many dimensions of life and intentions. Bringing to his writing his many years of teaching and research, Jon is able to empower the reader to explore the many aspects of "coming to our senses" with compassion and wisdom.

I highly recommend this powerful book for anyone who would like to delve into the practice of mindfulness in everyday life with one of the foremost teachers of the subject. A great read for a snowy winter!

Healing the Heart

A recent study published in Lancet, a leading British medical journal, examined the risk factors for heart attack (myocardial infarction) in over 24,000 people in 52 countries. Interestingly, the researchers noted a much higher correlation than previously thought of stress as a risk factor leading up to a heart attack. In their conclusion, the researchers determined that stress (defined as home, work, financial and major life events in the past year) was as significant a risk factor as diabetes and high blood pressure. These findings seem to span all demographic groups.

For those of you who have had a heart attack and would like to be part of a study on comparing tradional and spiritual post-heart attack recovery approaches, a very interesting clinical trial is enrolling participants. The study, "Healing the Heart" is sponsored by the University of Michigan Preventative Cardiology Program and the Michigan Integrative Medicine Program. You do not need to live in the Ann Arbor, MI area to participate. Heart attack survivors between the ages of 25 and 75 are eligible for the six- month study.

Workshops for Businesses

Did you know that 60-90% of physician visits involve a stress-related complaint? One of the most cost- effective ways for businesses to address rising healthcare costs is to provide stress management programming in an accessible format for their employees. Stress Resources will custom-design and implement workshops or programs to meet the needs of businesses and employees. Research has shown a positive correlation between increased stress management skills and an increase in employee concentration and job satisfaction....as well as healthier employees!
