Winter 2005 Stress Reduction Program

The Winter 2005 Session of the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction and Relaxation Program is beginning the week of January 23! This is an 8-week program, meeting once a week. Sessions will be offered on Tuesday evenings and Friday mornings at the Wright Tavern Center in Concord, MA. Registration is now taking place and class size will be limited to 15 students per session. Continuing education for nurses is available for the program.

Study Links Chronic Stress to Cell Aging

I have sent this article to many of my students. I consider this one of the most important studies that has been published in the past few years. Stay tuned for further clinical trials!

In a study published in the Nov 30, 2004 issue of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, a University of California (San Francisco) research team reports that chronic stress may affect the molecules believed to play a role in cellular aging and potentially in disease development. The study's principal investigator, Dr. Elissa Epel, states, "Numerous studies have solidly demonstrated a link between chronic psychological stress and indices of impaired health, including cardiovascular disease and weakened immune function...The new findings suggest a cellular mechanism for how chronic stress may cause premature onset of disease."

The good news is that it appears that stress reduction interventions, such as meditation and yoga, as well as cognitive interventions may slow the rate of cellular aging in chronic stress. So all the more reason to treat yourself to some self-care with a class, drop-in refresher session, workshop or retreat!
