AMHERST, Mass.-Beginning on Thursday, June 21, the Mead Art Museum at Amherst College will reprise last summer's popular series of guided gallery tours It's Cool at the Mead. The series' title refers both to the outstanding art considered in each tour and to the refreshing temperature of the museum's air-conditioned galleries.
Each gallery talk will focus on a different aspect of the museum's collection, and no two tours will be the same. Through these lively and engaging conversations, visitors will have opportunities to explore every nook and cranny of the Mead's extraordinary collection, in the cool comfort of the museum's galleries, free of charge. At the conclusion of each tour, every participant will receive a coupon for a complimentary ice cream cone from the series' co-sponsor, Atkins Farms Orchard Run Ice Cream Shop in Amherst.
Various members of the Mead's professional staff will lead the tours, including Director and Chief Curator Elizabeth Barker, Andrew W. Mellon Post-Baccalaureate Curatorial Fellow Maggie Dethloff, Curator of American Art Randall Griffey, Thomas P. Whitney (Class of 1937) Curator of Russian Art Bettina Jungen, Curator of Academic Programs Pamela Russell, Coordinator of Community Programs Wendy Somes and Study Room Supervisor Miloslava Waldman.
"It's Cool at the Mead (now in its second year) promises to become a local summer tradition, not unlike the delicious ice cream we're able to offer every attendee thanks to our generous co-sponsors at Atkins Farms," said Barker. "We hope that visitors will come to as many conversations as they'd like. Each tour will stand alone as a coherent presentation, but if experienced in succession, the series could serve almost as a mini-course in the history of art."
Free and open to the public, the gallery conversations will take place at 2 p.m. on 10 Thursday afternoons and at 11 a.m. on 10 Friday mornings:
