From the Principal's Desk

Dear Parents, Guardians, and Friends of OLMC,

This week marks the beginning of the Year of Faith for the universal Church and, therefore, for OLMC School. On Sunday, a meeting of bishops and Christians from around the world began to discuss the New Evangelization and the Transmission of the Faith. So vital is this New Evangelization and the adequate transmission of the deposit of faith that all of the Church's energy and resources are being poured into renewing the Church from within. If the Church's mission is to "go out to all the nations" then she must know who she is and what she is about. That is why Pope Benedict XVI insists that it is we, the baptized and the faithful, who are most in need of being evangelized, so that we can confidently take the gospel to those who have never heard the saving message. Throughout history, it is the saints - those whose lives are transformed by the faith - who have been Christ's light to the world. The Church, through the sacramental life, has always had the power to transform sinners into marvelous saints. Pope Benedict XVI is inviting us with fresh vigor, to tap into this power which transforms our own lives and in turn, transforms the world. There are four particular emphases in this Year of Faith which help us to focus our attention. They are, first, the 50th anniversary of the Second Vatican Council (October 11th); second, the 20th anniversary of the publication of the Catechism of the Catholic Church (also, October 11th); third, a focus on the Creed as a summary of what God has revealed for our belief and our response in faith; and finally, the New Evangelization. At our Created for Greatness meeting this month we began to discuss the Year of Faith, which Pope Benedict XVI promulgated in a document entitled "The Door of Faith." Using this title, each faith family is brainstorming, designing and decorating a classroom door in the school with themes particular to the year of faith and one of the four above-mentioned themes. Each hallway will become a reminder of the call to rediscover the joy of believing. Each of us is called to rediscover and renew a life of faith. Look in future OLWs and in the parish bulletin for ways to participate in this year of great graces.

With prayers for your families,

Sister Dominic

Today marks the beginning of the parent survey for the Strategic Plan. The survey will run from October 10th through midnight on October 19th. Please take 15 minutes to provide thoughtful answers to the prompts. The results of the survey are anonymous and will be reviewed and analyzed by a third party. Tomorrow, conference day, we intend to have several computers set up in hallways and in the computer lab for you to complete the survey while you are waiting, or after you've finished your conference. Thank you again for helping to determine the course of the future of OLMC! The survey link is https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/OLMC2012SP

School-Wide
Pet Pantry Project

Our Lady of Mount Carmel School is conducting a pet pantry collection led by the Christian Service Club. OLMC students, along with their families, are encouraged to help the Peninsula Pet Pantry. This pet pantry was created to help pet owners facing economic hardships feed their pets and care for them. When times get tough financially, many pet owners are forced to abandon their pets because they can not provide adequate care for them.  For many of these people, their pets are all they have.

OLMC is currently collecting donations of pet food, cat litter, and treats. Change, monetary donations, and pet food store gift cards are also greatly appreciated. If you are able to give to this great cause, please send your donations to school with your student(s) or bring them by the Front Office. The collection will end on October 19th. God bless you for your generosity.

OLMC's Strategic Plan

Our Lady of Mount Carmel School is in the process of conducting a Strategic Plan. These plans are developed as needed every five years and provide an opportunity for stake holders to examine our areas of strengths, weaknesses, and areas for growth. Near the end of the year they identify goals and strategies to help the school toward continuous improvement. The plan document, goals, and strategies are then entrusted to the School Board for prioritization and implementation. The Strategic Planning Committee is comprised of four smaller committees that focus on marketing and enrollment, leadership and governance, academic excellence, and financial sustainability. The planning committees work together over the course of the school year, to develop a plan that will clarify the future direction of the school, establish priorities, solve problems, plan for changing circumstances and improve overall performance.

As parents of the students at our school, we want you to realize that you have a direct impact on the direction of the school. Your feedback is essential and will drive a large part of the committee work for the Strategic Plan. In the coming weeks, we will be sending out a parent survey for your participation. Surveys are absolutely vital and an essential part of this process, and your candid feedback will be truly necessary. Please look for a survey email in the coming days, as the survey will launch on October 10th and will close at midnight on October 19th. The survey can be taken at home or there will be some computers available at school on the day of Parent/Teacher conferences. As in the past, the completion of this survey will earn an out of uniform pass for your child(ren). If you complete the survey at home, please print the final page, put your children's names on it and send it into the front office. If you complete it at school on conference day, please sign your name on the page next to the computer. God bless you and all that you do to foster the mission of our school.

Healthier Meals
Offered at OLMC!

Your child's day just got healthier! School lunches now include more fruits, vegetables, and whole grain-rich foods; only fat-free or low-fat milk; "right-size" meals with portions designed for a child's age; and less saturated fat, trans fat and sodium. The changes in school meals, the first in 15 years, are based on the latest nutritional guidelines.

Here are some important facts about the new nutritional guidelines:

  • A school lunch will still consist of five different food items from five main food groups. These groups are:
    • Meat/Meat Alternate (example:chicken, cheese)
    • Bread/Bread Alternate (example: rolls, pasta, rice)
    • Vegetable
    • Fruit
    • Fluid Milk
  • Half of all grains offered must be whole grain rich
  • Each day ¾ cup of vegetable is offered to include the following groups each week: dark green, orange/red, beans, starchy and other vegetables
  • Each day ½ cup of fruit is offered

We are pleased to offer these choices, in response to the parent surveys from last year. Your child can learn good habits for life by making healthy food choices and getting proper exercise now. This year is a transition year as schools implement these new standards and work together with parents, to ensure that every child, has access to healthy and nutritious meals. Encourage them to try new foods and eat the healthy food offered in the school cafeteria!
