From the Principal's Desk

Dear Parents, Guardians, and Friends of OLMC School,

October brings a schedule replete with many wonderful events at OLMC School, from parent teacher conferences to the opening of the Year of Faith , the Living Rosary, Fun Fair, and the Cornerstone Dinner.  I hope to see many of you on these special days of fellowship and prayer.
In keeping with our theme this year "Keep your eyes FIXED on Jesus", the students and I are praying a decade of the rosary together each morning.  Each decade is accompanied by a meditation on some aspect of the life, death, or resurrection of Christ, which is central to our faith and our relationship with God.  Many children bring in a special rosary from home to pray along each morning.  On the 25th of the month we will all gather together in the gym in the afternoon and pray the Luminous Mysteries.  Students from each grade level are invited to lead one of the prayers as we meditate on the mysteries of Jesus' life.  Particularly because our parish and school community are entrusted to the patronage of Our Lady, it is important to cultivate a love for this prayer and to teach it to our children.

On another note, I am happy to offer an out of uniform pass for children of parents who attend the first Year of Faith lecture by Sister Mary Diana, O.P. MD on the evening of October 16th at St. Michael's Hall.  A brief reception begins at 6:30 with the talk beginning at 7:00 p.m.  The title of this talk is "Morality, Medicine, and Faith."  More details are available in the bulletin and in this publication of Our Lady's Word.  Also, we have been able to add one more talk for all parents and parishioners while Sister Mary Diana is in town.  She will speak in the Commons Meeting Space around 9:00 a.m., at a Coffee with Sister following the all school Mass on October 19th.   This talk is also given from a medical perspective and is entitled "Chastity: What You Can't NOT Tell Your Children."   I hope to see you there.

With prayers for your families,
Sister Dominic

OLMC's Strategic Plan

Our Lady of Mount Carmel School is in the process of conducting a Strategic Plan. These plans are developed as needed every five years and provide an opportunity for stake holders to examine our areas of strengths, weaknesses, and areas for growth. Near the end of the year they identify goals and strategies to help the school toward continuous improvement. The plan document, goals, and strategies are then entrusted to the School Board for prioritization and implementation. The Strategic Planning Committee is comprised of four smaller committees that focus on marketing and enrollment, leadership and governance, academic excellence, and financial sustainability. The planning committees work together over the course of the school year, to develop a plan that will clarify the future direction of the school, establish priorities, solve problems, plan for changing circumstances and improve overall performance.

As parents of the students at our school, we want you to realize that you have a direct impact on the direction of the school. Your feedback is essential and will drive a large part of the committee work for the Strategic Plan. In the coming weeks, we will be sending out a parent survey for your participation. Surveys are absolutely vital and an essential part of this process, and your candid feedback will be truly necessary. Please look for a survey email in the coming days, as the survey will launch on October 10th and will close at midnight on October 19th. The survey can be taken at home or there will be some computers available at school on the day of Parent/Teacher conferences. As in the past, the completion of this survey will earn an out of uniform pass for your child(ren). If you complete the survey at home, please print the final page, put your children's names on it and send it into the front office. If you complete it at school on conference day, please sign your name on the page next to the computer. God bless you and all that you do to foster the mission of our school.

5th Grade Field Trip News

Do you know where the water you drink comes from?

The 5th graders had the opportunity to visit the Lee Hall Waterworks facility in Newport News on Thursday, September 27th. They learned that the facility provides the water for all of us living on this side of the James River: Poquoson, York County, Yorktown, Hampton, James City County, Williamsburg, not just for those living in Newport News!

God blessed the day with beautiful weather to tour the facility. The students were eager to demonstrate their knowledge of how water is treated before it comes to our homes.

An employee from the Plant made a point to mention that the 5th grade class was very well behaved, attentive and eager to learn. He noted that it was clear that they were very well prepared for the tour and was pleased to be able to contribute to their education. Parents, you can be very proud of your students!

OLMC's Cornerstone Dinner

On October 20th, Our Lady of Mount Carmel School

will be hosting the Cornerstone Dinner which will be held at Saint Michael Hall. You should have received an invitation last week. If not, please call the school

and we will get one to you.

The Cornerstone Dinner is a celebration of Catholic education and a wonderful showcase for our school. We are planning an evening of delicious dining, prepared by Jeanne Simko (parent of alumni) and entertainment. Mrs. George will bring in the choir for a short recital and Mrs. Thames will have a display of her students' artwork. Our keynote speaker will be Dr. Lisa Spiller, professor of marketing at Christopher Newport University and parent of two alumni and one current student of OLMC.

We hope that you will join us in our celebration! If you should have any questions, please contact Michele Smith x 221 or development@olmc-school.com

Healthier Meals
Offered at OLMC!

Your child's day just got healthier! School lunches now include more fruits, vegetables, and whole grain-rich foods; only fat-free or low-fat milk; "right-size" meals with portions designed for a child's age; and less saturated fat, trans fat and sodium. The changes in school meals, the first in 15 years, are based on the latest nutritional guidelines.

Here are some important facts about the new nutritional guidelines:

  • A school lunch will still consist of five different food items from five main food groups. These groups are:
    • Meat/Meat Alternate (example:chicken, cheese)
    • Bread/Bread Alternate (example: rolls, pasta, rice)
    • Vegetable
    • Fruit
    • Fluid Milk
  • Half of all grains offered must be whole grain rich
  • Each day ¾ cup of vegetable is offered to include the following groups each week: dark green, orange/red, beans, starchy and other vegetables
  • Each day ½ cup of fruit is offered

We are pleased to offer these choices, in response to the parent surveys from last year. Your child can learn good habits for life by making healthy food choices and getting proper exercise now. This year is a transition year as schools implement these new standards and work together with parents, to ensure that every child, has access to healthy and nutritious meals. Encourage them to try new foods and eat the healthy food offered in the school cafeteria!

October is
