Dear Parents, Guardians, and Friends of OLMC School,

As we continue to lay the groundwork for the school year, I want to introduce to you the virtues that the students, teachers, staff and I will be studying and cultivating in our lives throughout this academic year. We are in the third year of a three-year cycle of the Virtues in Practice Program wherein all the virtues we will study this year are designed to support and build the theological virtue of charity. (You may recall two years ago we worked on virtues which helped to deepen the virtue of faith, and last year, the virtue of hope.) In addition to the actual virtue of charity, which we will study and cultivate during the month of September, we will also study the virtues of friendship, courtesy, purity, fortitude, prudence, respect, forgiveness, and responsibility over the next nine months. By cultivating these virtues as individuals, we become open vessels through which God's own charity can flow into our community.

At a recent Faith Families Assembly, when I asked the students what charity was, many of them could tell me that its synonym was "love." Indeed, charity is love, but it is a very particular kind of love - God's own love, from which and for which we are made.

Love that is natural to human persons is something extraordinarily beautiful in itself. Scripture compares God's love to the most exquisite human loves - that of a mother toward her child, and of a husband and his wife. Yet, these loves are reflections of an even greater love, one than transcends humanity, and yet is offered to every human person to experience and possess. God offers His own love to grow in our hearts. This love enables us to love our enemies, to forgive those who have harmed us, to make ultimate sacrifices for those whom we love. It is the kind of love that is characteristic of and specific to authentic Christian communities.

Love is central to every human life. It is what motivates us at all moments of the day because we seek to possess what we love. If we need to change our lives, then we need to change what or Who we love. Father Pedro Arrupe, a Jesuit priest, captures the power of love in a few poignant lines:

Nothing is more practical than finding God, that is, than falling in love in a quite absolute, final way. What you are in love with, what seizes your imagination, will affect everything. It will decide what will get you out of bed in the mornings, what you will do with your evenings, how you will spend your weekends, what you read, who you know, what breaks your heart, and what amazes you with joy and gratitude. Fall in love, stay in love, and it will decide everything.

Let us continue to build a community based on this kind of love.

With prayers for your families,

Sister Dominic

Service Hours

In an effort to help keep the tuition cost low, Our Lady of Mount Carmel School requires each registered family to complete a minimum of 20 Service Hours per school year (10 hours if you are a single parent or have a deployed spouse). There will be 10 additional hours added to the requirement if a family receives financial aid. Service hours may be completed through ministries in the OLMC Parish (10 hour maximum credit), performing general work around the school, working in the school classrooms, chaperoning class events, preparing for and working during the school's special events, and sometimes completing take-home work for teachers. Attendance for class programs, school functions, or sporting events are not included for service hours, unless otherwise specified. All families are required to track their own hours and record them in the Service Hours box located in the school's front office. Each trimester, the family hours worked will be totaled and a letter will be sent home in the child's report card stating the total hours completed and the hours remaining to fulfill the requirement. The service hour cut-off date will be May 15th of each school year. Any hours not completed will be billed at a rate of $10.00 per hour and added to the family's tuition account.

Below is a sampling of ideas for obtaining Service Hours. Please be sure to check Our Lady's Word and the school website for additional "help needed" information:

On Thursday, August 23, 2012, Our Lady of Mount Carmel School began serving hot lunches in the school cafeteria under the National School Lunch Program (NSLP). All lunches will be prepared on-site in our school cafeteria. These lunches will be nutritious, well balanced, and will follow the meal patterns required by the NSLP. Our children will be provided approximately 1/3 of the daily nutrients they require for a balanced diet according to the government recommended dietary allowances for their age groups.

A school lunch will consist of five different food items from five main food groups. These groups are:

1) Meat/Meat Alternate (example: chicken/cheese)

2)Bread/Bread Alternate (example: rolls/pasta, rice)

3)Vegetable

4) Fruit

5)Fluid Milk

The cost of the meal is $3.00, which includes a choice of 1% low fat white milk, or 1% low fat chocolate milk. (If your child is lactose intolerant and you wish to substitute juice for milk you are required to submit a letter from your physician requesting this change. We are required, by government regulations, to keep such documentation on file. )

Lunches may be purchased daily through the children's lunch account. Normally deposits will be posted to lunch accounts on THURSDAYS ONLY, however, we receive and post deposits to lunch accounts every day during the first week of school. To make a deposit to your children's lunch account, please follow the procedure outlined here: Place your lunch account money in an envelope marked with your child's name, grade, room number, and amount enclosed. The deposits will be processed each Thursday morning. Checks should be made out to Our Lady of Mount Carmel School. You may add funds to your children's account in any denomination you wish.
