From the Principal's Desk
Dear Parents, Guardians, and Friends of OLMC School,
The students, faculty, and staff participated in the inaugural Faith Family event on Monday morning this week, which seemed to be a great success. Each Faith Family consists of 15-20 students, guided by a catechist teacher and support staff, which draws the entire OLMC School community into the program. Following the morning lesson, teachers were ready to tell of wonderful relationships they saw building within their Faith Families, and the great care our middle school students assumed for our youngest ones. The objectives for this initial meeting were simply to learn the names and faces of those who are in each Faith Family, as well as the procedures of moving into and out of Faith Families in an orderly way.
The overarching goals of the program are:
1. To establish/strengthen a Christian culture through common and repeated exposures to religious, academic, and patriotic symbols and rituals, using common vocabulary and setting goals for the purpose of growing in virtue.
2. To establish cross-age groupings and appropriate relationships to develop social awareness and responsibility - the virtue of solidarity.
3. To teach and practice the virtues according to the Virtues in Practice (VIP) Program already established at OLMC School.
4. To provide leadership opportunities for students in grades seven and eight.
Faith Families will meet at the beginning of each month for about 30 minutes. I hope that these lessons will also provide opportunities for students and teachers alike to encounter Christ anew in this Year of Faith, which the Church will celebrate from October 11, 2012 - November 24, 2013.
Throughout the school, written in classrooms, and falling off the lips of teachers and administrators is the spiritual theme for the year: Keep your eyes fixed on Jesus. Over the course of our lives, and even over the course of a single day, we need to hear this reminder to focus our vision in the right place. When our eyes are fixed on Jesus, our hearts tend to trust better what He is doing in and through our lives, and the over exaggerated "crises" assume their rightful place. Sometimes we strain our sight, literally and metaphorically, in order to focus on things that are too small for human vision or too far away for us to gain adequate clarity. With eyes fixed on Jesus, we see all that we need to see, and know that He will bring into focus for us those things that need our attention, effort, energy, and love. We invite you to join us in memorizing, practicing, and living out the exhortation from Hebrews 12 to keep your eyes fixed on Jesus.
Our Strategic Planning Committee will have its first meeting in early September. If you are interested in serving on a focus-group committee for Marketing & Enrollment, Governance & Leadership, Academic Excellence, or Finance please contact me for more information.
I look forward to seeing the parents of our Pre-K-5th grade students next Thursday evening at Back to School Night at 6:30 in the gym. Let us pray for one another, and for our children, during this school year.
With prayers for your families,
Sister Dominic

Back to School Night Please join us on September 6, 2012 at 6:30pm, for our PreK-5th grade Back to School Night, and on September 13, 2012 at 6:30pm, for the Middle School Back to School Night.
Back to School Night is a beneficial opportunity to learn important information about your child's religious and academic experience for this school year. Parents will learn more about the spiritual theme "Keep your eyes fixed on Jesus" and how this exhortation will be practiced throughout the school year. There will also be a general meeting in the gym, club sign ups, school sales, plenty of information, refreshments and an opportunity to visit the classrooms and meet your child(ren)'s teachers.

Soccer Tryouts
Soccer has officially started with tryouts. However, Mother Nature decided to throw us a curve with a downpour on Monday. The Coaches were able to conduct about 20 minutes of exercises, and therefore need to add Thursday onto the soccer tryout days, to help them make an informed decision about the team.
Soccer Tryouts will be held this week on Tuesday, Wednesday, and now Thursday from 3:30 - 5:15 at Boulevard Park in Newport News.

Introducing a New Club at OLMC
Faith, Academics and Service are the cornerstones for an exceptional Catholic education. We recognize that our families are looking for just that when they come to OLMC. The parent surveys from last year indicated that families are looking for more ways to incorporate service into the OLMC education. We are pleased to announce that we've added a tremendous opportunity for our students and families, the Christian Service Club.
The purpose of this club is to implement a community service initiative that will draw the school families closer together to live out our Christian call to humility and service. The club will serve as a way to gather the school students and families together for a virtuous purpose to live the sacraments, help others through deeds of love and mercy, and share the good news of the gospel.
The goals are to explore ways for children to put their faith into action, teach service to the children of OLMC, connect with the church, and provide service opportunities for parents and students as a school community.
The Christian Service Club is open to all OLMC students in PreK(3)-8th grade. Students that are in grades PreK(3)-5th grade, are required to attend all meetings and events with a parent or guardian. Middle School students in 6th-8th grade will be able to participate without a parent. The club welcomes the participation of all the parents! Meetings will be held monthly. There will be some events held on nights and weekends, so that all parents, including those that work day-time hours, will have an opportunity to participate.
The parent surveys also indicated that families are looking for more leadership opportunities for the students. In response to the requests, the club will provide several leadership opportunities for Middle School Students in 7th and 8th grade. The available positions include: President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Historian. Elections will be held mid-September.
The Christian Service Club will begin registration in September. More information will follow in future editions of Our Lady's Word.
Matthew 25:40. "The King will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.'

Notes About Bingo Nights
During the school year, all families will be required to work two bingo shifts during the year, in an effort to keep tuition costs low. Bingo shifts will be held at the Knights of Columbus in Newport News. The address is 12742 Nettles Drive Newport News, VA 23606.
The schedule of names for the bingo shifts is posted on our website, and can be found by clicking on the following link. Please note the file is large, so you may need to zoom in.
New this year, the OLW will contain a bingo calendar to remind families of their upcoming bingo nights. While this calendar will be helpful, it should not serve as the sole reminder for bingo shifts. The full calendar is available on our website for your review at any time.
Please allow several days for a reply.
Once you completed your bingo shift, you will be able to pick up an out of uniform pass for each student in your family, at the bingo hall that night. If you forget to pick up your pass, they will be available in the Front Office. Students are permitted to select any day they wish to use the pass, with the exception of Mass days. Please be sure to have your child(ren) turn the pass in to their Homeroom Teacher. Additional bingo shifts, beyond the two required, will count toward service hours.
If you worked bingo over the summer, please be sure to request the out of uniform pass for your child(ren) from the Front Office.
Thank you for your cooperation!

Virtus Training
All OLMC volunteers should attend a Virtus training session. VIRTUS is the brand name that identifies best practices programs designed to help prevent wrongdoing and promote "rightdoing" within religious organizations. The VIRTUS programs empower organizations and people to better control risk and improve the lives of all those who interact with the Church. Protecting God's Children® for Adults is training conducted by VIRTUS certified facilitators on the prevention of child sexual abuse. The training makes participants aware of the signs of child sexual abuse, the methods and means by which offenders commit abuse, and five easy steps one can use to prevent child sexual abuse. Two videos are the centerpiece of the training: A Time to Protect God's Children™ and A Plan to Protect God's Children™. The facilitators incorporate policies and procedures into the training defining child sexual abuse, addressing the reporting of child sexual abuse, the screening and selection of employees and volunteers, and victim advocacy. If you've already attended the Virtus training, it is imperative that you read the short monthly bulletins and answer the question at the end, in order to keep your training current. If you forgot your username and/or password, please contact Julie Hill at 757-596-2754 or at jhill@olmc-school.com to recover your information. There will be a VIRTUS training session at Our Lady of Mount Carmel School on September 22, 2012 at 9am. Space is limited and the sessions fill up quickly, so please be sure to register in time. To register for the OLMC session, or for more information about other upcoming sessions in the area, please click on the following link: Upcoming Virtus Training Sessions
