Welcome to OLMC!

On behalf of the administration, faculty, staff, and school board at OLMC, we would like to welcome the new families to our school this year! We are pleased to have you and are looking forward to a fantastic year. If you have any questions, or if there is anything that we can do to make your first year more enjoyable, please let us know.

Welcome to Mount Carmel!

Thank You!

The Class of 2012 gave a very generous gift to OLMC at the end of last school year. They purchased updated equipment for our sound system in the school gym, and OLMC is extremely appreciative of this.

Over the summer, John Triska donated a tremendous amount of time researching deals, and putting this system together for us. Mr. Triska, we are extremely thankful for your talents and the time that you gave to OLMC this summer.

The amplifier has been replaced, there is a new wireless microphone system, and the speakers on the stage are now functioning properly. We are very grateful and are really looking forward to the enhanced school shows, plays and presentations!

Thank You!

We would like to thank Stewart Nelson for fixing the water fountains throughout the school. Mr. Nelson generously donated his time and talents to OLMC this summer, and ensured that our drinking fountains are properly working now.

Mr. Nelson, thank you for all of your hard work. We truly appreciate the ways that you've helped the school.

Congratulations!

Dear Parents, Guardians, and Friends of Our Lady of Mount Carmel School,

The new year has begun!  Welcome back to all of our returning families, and a very warm welcome to all families who are joining OLMC School for the first time this year.  All of the children look much taller, and they seem to have enjoyed the summer months.  We have been awaiting their return and welcome all the energy and vitality that the children bring to our building each day.

The teachers and staff have spent the past several weeks busily preparing for our new year, working in classrooms, preparing lessons, and attending workshops of varied topics of interest.  We began our pre-service work days with a wonderful retreat on living the Christian vocation and the vocation of Catholic educators, given by our new pastor, Father John David.  The workshop on school-wide discipline afforded us the opportunity to strengthen our own discipline program at all grade levels.  Finally, we participated in workshops sponsored by Catholic School Management, a nationally renown consulting group whose mission is to provide measures of sustainability for Catholic schools in a changing market.  This was a wonderful way to come together as a school to understand the importance of our mission in the 21st century.

Our first school Mass will be on Friday, August 24th at 8:15.  We hope to see many of you there.  We are still looking for a volunteer pianist to accompany for our Friday morning Mass.  In the meantime we encourage everyone to use their voices as the primary instrument for singing God's praises!

I am pleased to announce that Mrs. Lauren Rosenbaum will be working as the preK aide in the new preK classroom.  She and Mrs. Barrett are helping our youngest students to adjust to the ways of OLMC.  Thank you for all who donated items toward this new classroom.

On a different note, I also need to announce that Mrs. Smith, our Development Director, will have a different role in Development this year.  Torn between the needs of her family and the love of OLMC, she has decided that she will need to phase out of her position.  She will be working on the typical fall development events including the Cornerstone Dinner in October and the Making a Difference Race in November.  The Home and School Association will be running the Fun Fair, as usual, and has also taken on the Craft Fair in December.  We certainly thank Mrs. Smith for her dedication to the school, for the many relationships she has built with individuals and companies who have chosen to support OLMC through donations and attending our events.  The spring auction is a major event for the school that had been coordinated by the Development Director in the past few years.  If you are interested in chairing the auction this year, please contact Sister Dominic directly.  Many hands are always needed on this grand event!

There has been ongoing interest in building the sports program at OLMC to enable either younger students to participate and/or less competitive students to have experience of team sports.  We are fielding interest in an intramural sports program to address these requests.  Please contact Mrs. Toland, our new P.E. teacher at athletic.director@olmc-school.com if you are able to help with coaching or coordinating the intramural sports program.

Thank you to those who have worked Bingo on Monday nights over the summer.  As a way of saying thank you, I would like to offer out-of-uniform passes for each of your children each time you work at Bingo.  If you have not received passes for hours worked in the summer, please request them from the front office.  Typically, the team "Captain" at Bingo will have passes available for your children on the night that you work Bingo.

Our Created for Greatness program (begun last year in the Middle School) has merged with Faith Day!  The lessons of learning, instilling, and cultivating virtues and forming relationships which contribute toward building a Christian culture are part of the moral and social maturity of our children.  These lessons will be taught through the Virtues in Practice program which our school has followed for several years.  All students will participate in the Created for Greatness (C4G) program within a faith family which consists of students from each grade level, under the direction of a catechist teacher.  On the first Monday of each month (or Tuesday if Monday is a holiday) the students will meet for about 30 minutes in their faith families to accomplish these lessons.  The leadership of the middle school students, with emphasis on the 8th grade students, is built into this program.  I look forward to sharing the progress of the program with you each month.

Our spiritual theme for the 2012-2013 school year derives from the letter to the Hebrews, chapter 12 and is simply "Keep your eyes fixed on Jesus."  I will write more about this in next week's OLW and throughout the school year.

Many of you are probably aware that our Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI has declared a Year of Faith for the universal Church.  It begins on October 11th, the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council, and will be celebrated through November 24th of 2013 - the feast of Christ the King.  Both the parish and the school will celebrate the Year of Faith in a variety of ways.

Thank you again for entrusting your children to us at OLMC.  We look forward to partnering with you this year as you raise young men and women to be the saints God made them to be.

With prayers for your families,
Sister Dominic, O.P.

Introducing a New Club at OLMC

Faith, Academics and Service are the cornerstones for an exceptional Catholic education. We recognize that our families are looking for just that when they come to OLMC. The parent surveys from last year indicated that families are looking for more ways to incorporate service into the OLMC education. We are pleased to announce that we've added a tremendous opportunity for our students and families, the Christian Service Club.

The purpose of this club is to implement a community service initiative that will draw the school families closer together to live out our Christian call to humility and service. The club will serve as a way to gather the school students and families together for a virtuous purpose to live the sacraments, help others through deeds of love and mercy, and share the good news of the gospel.

The goals are to explore ways for children to put their faith into action, teach service to the children of OLMC, connect with the church, and provide service opportunities for parents and students as a school community.

The Christian Service Club is open to all OLMC students in PreK(3)-8th grade. Students that are in grades PreK(3)-5th grade, are required to attend all meetings and events with a parent or guardian. Middle School students in 6th-8th grade will be able to participate without a parent. The club welcomes the participation of all the parents! Meetings will be held monthly. There will be some events held on nights and weekends, so that all parents, including those that work day-time hours, will have an opportunity to participate.

The parent surveys also indicated that families are looking for more leadership opportunities for the students. In response to the requests, the club will provide several leadership opportunities for Middle School Students in 7th and 8th grade. The available positions include: President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Historian. Elections will be held mid-September.

The Christian Service Club will begin registration in September. More information will follow in future editions of Our Lady's Word.

Matthew 25:40. "The King will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.'

Fun Fair Volunteer Opportunity

The annual Fun Fair will be on October 6th. If you are interested in helping with setting/cleaning up, ticket and raffle sales, cake walk, kitchen duties and helping to run some activities, please email either Teresa McGee at tmcgee1995@msn.com or Barbara Flores at farabrab@aol.com. Please be sure to include your name, phone number, email address and activity you are interested in supporting. This is a fun event, a great way to meet people, and the volunteer hours will count toward your service hours. Thank you in advance for volunteering!

Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion

There will be a training session for anyone that would like to serve as an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion at school Masses this year. The preparation class will be held on August 23rd at 8:20am. This training is for both those wishing to serve for the first time, and for those that have served before and would like to continue to serve. If you would like to attend, please email Christine Tucker at ctucker@olmc-school.com

Our Lady of Mount Carmel would like to announce and welcome Mrs. Rosenbaum to Pre-KA! She will serve as the Pre-K Aide for the new preschool classroom. Welcome Mrs. Rosenbaum!

While we have been busy purchasing necessary supplies and preparing for the new Pre-K, the following wish list completes the current needs for the classroom. If your family has the means to donate one or more of the following items, new or used, the Pre-K teacher and students would be grateful.

Notes About Bingo Nights

During the school year, all families will be required to work two bingo shifts during the year, in an effort to keep tuition costs low. Bingo shifts will be held at the Knights of Columbus in Newport News. The address is 12742 Nettles Drive Newport News, VA 23606.

The schedule of names for the bingo shifts is posted on our website, and can be found by clicking on the following link. Please note the file is large, so you may need to zoom in.

General information about bingo, as well as instructions for the floor and kitchen staff can also be found on our website. Please visit:
 http://www.olmc-school.com/General.pdf
 http://www.olmc-school.com/Instructions.pdf

New this year, the OLW will contain a bingo calendar to remind families of their upcoming bingo nights. While this calendar will be helpful, it should not serve as the sole reminder for bingo shifts. The full calendar is available on our website for your review at any time.

If you have any questions about your scheduled nights, please contact Neil O'Connor at: bingo.olmcschool@cavtel.net
Please allow several days for a reply.

Once you completed your bingo shift, you will be able to pick up an out of uniform pass for each student in your family, at the bingo hall that night. If you forget to pick up your pass, they will be available in the Front Office. Students are permitted to select any day they wish to use the pass, with the exception of Mass days. Please be sure to have your child(ren) turn the pass in to their Homeroom Teacher. Additional bingo shifts, beyond the two required, will count toward service hours.

If you worked bingo over the summer, please be sure to request the out of uniform pass for your child(ren) from the Front Office.

Thank you for your cooperation!

Virtus Training

All OLMC volunteers should attend a Virtus training session. VIRTUS is the brand name that identifies best practices programs designed to help prevent wrongdoing and promote "rightdoing" within religious organizations. The VIRTUS programs empower organizations and people to better control risk and improve the lives of all those who interact with the Church.

Protecting God's Children® for Adults is training conducted by VIRTUS certified facilitators on the prevention of child sexual abuse. The training makes participants aware of the signs of child sexual abuse, the methods and means by which offenders commit abuse, and five easy steps one can use to prevent child sexual abuse. Two videos are the centerpiece of the training: A Time to Protect God's Children™ and A Plan to Protect God's Children™. The facilitators incorporate policies and procedures into the training defining child sexual abuse, addressing the reporting of child sexual abuse, the screening and selection of employees and volunteers, and victim advocacy.

If you've already attended the Virtus training, it is imperative that you read the short monthly bulletins and answer the question at the end, in order to keep your training current. The upcoming summer break is a great time to read and catch up on these bulletins. If you forgot your username and/or password, please contact Julie Hill at 757-596-2754 or at jhill@olmc-school.com to recover your information.
