Supporting Sidewalks
City Council Votes March 26

City Council will decide on the 26th whether to go forward with a project that would complete the network of sidewalks in the Hallquist neighborhood. Currently Hallquist and Eunice are two main streets that do not have sidewalks; most other streets in the area do. The neighborhood has three parks and is within a mile and a half of Red Wing High School and Twin Bluff Middle School.

* Do you feel sidewalks encourage safer walking and biking?
* Did you live once without a sidewalk and now are glad you have one?

Send an email to Council members and the Mayor in support of sidewalks. Click here for their addresses.

Sidewalks make communities safer places for everyone to walk, bike, get to school, and visit your neighbors!
Questions on Billings-Tomfohr

Where is it? On the bluff behind Twin Bluff Middle School. It's surrounded by neighborhoods on Twin Bluff Road, Perlich, Neal Street, Woodland Drive, Birchwood, Red Oak, West Maple, and Spruce Drive.

How do I get to it? You'll find trail heads on Sumac (off Red Oak) and on Neal Street. Look for the City of RW signs with a hiker symbol.

Why are there areas of cut trees and brush piles on top? Minnesota Audubon cut buckthorn and cedars, two non-native invasive species, from the south side of the bluff to restore the prairie and make way for native birds to return. Funds came from a state grant.

When will the piles be removed? Due to lack of snow this winter, piles could not be burned as scheduled. The brush will probably remain until next winter.

Can I get to Billings-Tomfohr from the Twin Bluff neighborhood? LHRW and the school district are working to make the bluff more accessible to students and neighbors on the south side. A new trail will be created early this summer.

The Red Wing App!

What is it?  The future Red Wing app will allow residents and visitors to access information on outdoor recreation, culture, and business in Red Wing via their phones. LHRW is spearheading the initiative and partnering with others to make it available by late 2012.

How will it help me if I like to hike and bike? The app will let you use your phone to see maps of paths and trails and give you specific information on flora and fauna, history, geology, points of interest, trail conditions, and more.
