Greetings from Ho Chi Minh City!!!

Xin chào (Hello)! This is the second of a  monthly newsletter sharing about some of my experiences touring in Asia. This month I've observed how important it is to embrace and appreciate diversity, rather than just tolerate it. Every day I recognize that at the very core of our beings, we are all the same despite our differing cultures and experiences, and we can add richness to each others lives as a result if we are willing to share our lives and stories openly.

Its also pretty cool to see that music, some forms of body language (smiles, pinky swearing), food, and love are languages that are universal, and connect us across religious, political and cultural lines. I'm so grateful that I get to speak one of them every day. Music is a particularly special one too because it has the power to make us feel so many wonderful things. To feel happy after a long day of hard work, to express and move beyond feelings of sadness after losing someone, to get through bad experiences, to be empowered, to heal our relationships. Its just fantastic.

I wish I had more time to write, but I have to get ready to perform. Please check out some of the videos on my youtube page. They'll showcase some of my experiences. And again, feel free to respond to the email with questions about topics you'd like me to talk about, constructive criticism about my performance/artistry, and insight on whatever inspires you! :D Much love and big hugs!!!

Let the seasoning begin!!

Here are more tools and insights I'm picking up about life and performance. I'll call these my DIVA DISCOVERIES:
  • You don't have to wear 6 inch heels on stage. 3-4 inches will still look great and won't be as damaging to the knees. Wear insoles as well and socks where possible to absorb shock from energetic dancing/jumping on stage.
  • Great Hygiene is all important. You'll be sweating on stage if you're doing it right, and you want to be a sweet smelling flower when you interact with guests and customers.
  • Always use your own microphone. If you must share with other performers, soak the mic in mouthwash before you use it.  Wipe it down in between sets to avoid getting lipstick all over your face.
  • Wash your hands in between sets and have antibacterial hand-sanitizer on hand as well. Some of my fellow performers have gotten eye infections from shaking hands.
  • Work out as much as possible to build strength and stamina for stage performance. For ladies, focus on full leg strength or your knees will suffer. Jumping in heels is no joke.
  • Bring comfortable slippers to change into post-performance.
  • Double sided tape is great for slinky dresses, but it fails when you start to sweat. Undershorts or spanks are even better!
  • Stage makeup is different than nightwear. Stage lights drown out even the deepest reds. Don't be afraid to lay it on thick. Permanent or all day lipstick won't get all over your microphone and will withstand sweat better than regular lipstick.
  • A little bit of nervous excitement is a good thing. Pretend like every  performance is your last, or your big break and the crowd will be thoroughly entertained.
  • Allow your voice to be released freely. Don't strain or force or concern yourself with individual notes, pitches or VOCAL CONTROL. That is fear based and will certainly constrain your voice.  Not only that, but for every force there is an opposing force-- so while your pushing your voice an opposing force is holding it back. Release the tension and the note is released. It will feel great and sounds great!
  • Confidence is everything. Whenever critical thoughts start entering my mind about my voice or what the crowd thinks about my performance, it immediately shows up in my voice. When I am enjoying the lyrics, music and movement they completely enjoy it as well. Its like magic :).

I plan on doing a new photoshoot once a month, and will put the best look in my signature below! :D This is a shoot that was done by a local studio in Ho Chi Minh City, and represents a traditional Vietnamese look :) More photos can be viewed here.
